It's so sad to see that so much love and care was put into the predecessors. Team Sonic Racing lets you chain boosts and flips occasionally, Transformed blows that completely out of the water by allowing you to flip everytime your boat launches from a wave crashing or when you flip a few frames away from colliding while flying all while you're able drift and chain everything, & the original Sega All Stars Racing had some of the best all-star abilities. I feel like for both Riders and the kart series, every time a new one was released, some really fun gameplay aspects were left behind.
Sonic Free Riders is my favourite. It plays a lot like the first game, but playing it physically really felt good. The tricks were more satisfying. Controls worked perfectly fine for me. But you do need the right space and lighting, so I do think it should have had a controller option, which we now know is possible. I even liked the story. I thought the cutscene presentation was actually better than the previous Riders games as they ironically were more expressive, and the story was better told and suited a racing game more. Plus, the intro CGI I like even more than the first game's. Meanwhile, I respect the Drift and Rivals duologies. Not amazing, but neat and a lot of fun. I would like the all stars series to continue, even if they are the least original, they were some of the best. Also, I believe there are also some obscure mobile racing games on ios and Java, some being lost. Also, isn't Sonic Speed Simulator a racing game? There's also Forces Speed Battle which is fun.
I can understand putting Riders at number 1, but how did you place Zero Gravity over Sonic&Sega All-Stars Racing or Transformed? Zero Gravity was simplified AF and lacks a high skill ceiling. The Sonic&Sega All-Stars Racing and Transformed, while simple, are so much more diverse, have better campaigns, better controls and higher skill ceilings.
Great review of all the games. The top 5 all seem interesting. I haven't tried the Sega all stars but that will be next if they don't do a remake of Sonic riders. That game is epic fun for higher level style racing
Finally more love to sonic rivals 2 ❤. Underrated in some aspects, wish it got implemented better. One of my first sonic games and still playing on my PSP even now. Transformed is my favourite racing game ever, it's just 👌

Sonic Team Racing should have went full Sonic the Hedgehog franchise theming and universe when it got rid off of all the other Sega stuff the games had before

Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed is simply one of the best racing games I've played, I had tons of fun playing it! Very underrated game, better than a lot of Mario Karts out there.
I’m hellbent on finding the sonic racing game where you can play as shadow, silver, sonic, etc. but instead of race cars you were on foot and had to advance through obby like levels and be the first to the end but I can’t find it anywhere 😭 I played it on the 360 when I was younger and it was 2 players but I don’t remember the name of it 😢
I found it! It’s not an official “Sonic racing game” but Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 had 2 player split screen and you could “race” to be the first to beat the level against a friend/sibling. Knew I wasn’t going crazy 😅 That game was goated 🙏

Yeah i personally believe putting Zero Gravity above all the Sonic racing games is a crime. Zero Gravity dummed down the gameplay so much that it became boring to play in comparison. The only redeeming qualities of the game are the music, the look of the tracks, gravity mechanic etc. The best Sonic racing game is tied between Transformed and the original Riders. OG Riders carry in terms of it having a story, mechanics and it having a higher skill ceiling but Transformed when it comes to everything else. It's probably one of the best kart racers in the market
It was, they even had to change how the Plane and Boat modes handled because they didn't want to be seen as copying Mario Kart 7 when they had the idea before Nintendo did. (I could be wrong though).
Here’s the thing… sonic free riders did lowkey suck… the only reason why is because the sensor of the Kinect. I believe if that sensor was better optimize, the game would perform better. I know this because I had a bootleg Kinect growing up, but the developers said that it was a higher performed version of the original kinetic and with this, I played sonic free riders. itit was more fun. It was super smooth and it was very responsive and I had such a blast. Plus, the soundtrack slaps!

Nice rankings, but if there's one thing I primarily disagree with in validation, it comes at 0:55. In that, the story of Free Riders is actually awful and weak in similar vein to the controls. The story presentation is the weakest of the "three", there's no special world-building or lore unlike the previous two Riders games, and above all else, the characters are utterly cynical, mean-spirited, and annoying when compared to previous Sonic titles. The only legit story element comes at the end with Metal Sonic, but yeah...Free Riders does not have a good story. I also disagree with 9:35 too. I actually believe the first Riders is fairly good. Interesting characters, lore, and Riders' expressive, cartoonish charm. That's all great.

This might be a hot take I do not consider Sonic Rivals and Sonic R series as a racing game because Yes do not get me wrong you race one another but you are racing in the floor to me I classified a racing game if you are on a car, bike, trucks, skate board like the riders series and I will admit sleighs. Rivals series you don't used cars which is a problem in my brain understanding.

After throughly enjoying sonic and sega all stars racing and transformed and then playing team racing, it was an absolute dissapointment! No wonder it wasnt full priced. The next one needs to back to the transformed board.
It does my head in. SEGA/Sonic Team probably have no idea how to make it work so they just throw cars in which are easier and they outsource to Sumo who are pretty good at making racing games.
