  • Thomas and Brandon review the New Balance FuelCell Supercomp Pacer, a fast 5K/10K shoe with a carbon fiber plate, FuelCell midsole, and lightweight, airy mesh upper. It's definitely fast, but in the age of super shoes, how necessary is it? We're kind of not sure. Available June 2022 for $150.

    Yep. This is going to do it for me. And i refuse to believe it’s only a 5k shoe. I used to do 15-20 miles in shoes with less stack than this in the olden days…and we liked it that way! 😂

    I wouldn't necessarily categorize myself as the super efficient, quick turnover, fast runner...but this shoe still appeals to me. I had previously been wearing the Brooks Launch for speed work days and really liked it, and I just ran a half marathon in the Rebel v2. This seems like a combo of those two with a carbon plate, and for $150 (vs $200+), it is tempting to try it as my first shoe with the carbon plate.

      This shoe is for me too. I like the low stack midsole that uses the soft fuel cell cushion. Kinda wish it didn't have the carbon fiber plate, I don't the rigidity plates add to the shoe. As long as the upper can hold up to the abuse, this should be a great shoe for how I intend to use it.

    I've been looking for a 10k and HM shoe that feels like a XC flat, provides enough cushion for the HM while avoiding the disco-platform-space-shoe stack, incorporates leading edge materials for bounce (FuelCell, here), pop/spring (carbon plate), and overall efficiency. I'll receive a pair of Pacers tomorrow and am optimistic these fit the bill.
    I might be the only person looking for this shoe. If I'm running a 5k, I'll be in Nike Zoom Victory Waffle XC 5 (either rubber lug or spike option). Training in a Saucony Kilkenny XC (rubber-lugs) for runs up to 15 miles, but I have to tape up to prevent problems.

      @TimNguyen825 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's interesting to hear. I think the next% is a great road 5k shoe and have seen a bunch of top runners at the start line wearing them. Even gave seen runners wear the alphaflys but it does trend to be older runners wearing them

    • @jkhoudini
      @jkhoudini 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TimNguyen825 IMO vaporflys def are good for 5k, especially a situation where you just lock in and time trial. I believe the efficiency benefits certain translates across distances and they just make the race feel more comfortable. However, for the faster runners, especially in races where placing is more important, they do find them slightly more of a chore to turnover when they need to push the pace or trying to out sprint someone at the finish. For a 5k, I would gladly give up some comfort and cushioning For that ability to shift gears. Those niche situations would be where the SC pacer and the metaspeed edge come in handy.

    I cringe when reviewers bend a shoe in half in attempt to show its stiffness. You are literally ruining a brand new shoe. A better technique would be to have a familiar/comparable shoe nearby that you can pick up, flex (within a Realistic angle/range). Then pick up the shoe under review to flex similarly to speak on how it compares to the familiar shoe. Relative comparisons like this are more valuable & relatable to viewers. Perhaps take it a step further and flex individually at the midfoot, then the forefoot to comment more specifically on where the stiffness is and how it relates to comparable shoes.
    Other then that, Love the vids guys, keep it up!

    experienced the same cracking when flexing it his review video. Could yall further investigate this. Maybe bend the one that is cracked several more times then set it next to the fresher one and see if they still the same curvature(how high the toe is off the ground). Then flex each to see if the cracked one is still as stiff as the other. I had my hopes up for this shoe, but if its a defective design will go with a diff shoe and hold out for the next version. Please advise.

    It has potential because it is soft and lightweight but your feet get protected from the road by having a plate.. I find the Rebel V2 to unstable. RCV2 excellent for everything but a bit unstable in corners and impossible for making a fast U turn. I find FuelCell much better than ZoomX.

      Yeah I commented saying I think they are being harsh on this shoe. I also have and really like the RC Elite V2 but it's far from good on corners so now most shoes have maxed out I think we are finding that actually somewhere in the middle height with a good midsole is what most folk might get most advantage with as we aren't all running professional end to end marathons all the time.

    That seemed a really harsh review for me. They seemed to say pretty much all good things about it but were comparing it to the RC Elite V2 and Alphafly's ect but this shoe is probably more a 5km/Park Run to 10km shoe where there will be more corners and tighter turns maybe than a typical end to end Marathon. For example I have the RC Elite V2 and Alphafly's and find them both very fast but also have the Takumi Sen 8 which I have my local park run PB in as it's 3 laps of the course and there is two about 45 degree turns per lap and one over a narrow wooden bridge that the Alphafly's struggle with and really need to slow down on but less so with the Sen 8. So think this shoe has to be judged on its own merit plus at $150 for fuel cell midsole and full length carbon plate it seems like a total bargain by todays carbon running shoe prices.

      I think the carbon plate makes it a better version of a 5/10km racer than the streakfly is and at the same price I think it'll be a great seller. Maybe the only problem is the Adidas Takumi Sen 8 and Nike Streakfly have gotten out first so most people will have probably went for them first as I know I did with the Takumi Sen 8 but I really enjoy the Fuelcell midsole in the RC Elite V2's I have, & at only around £115 (today's conversion rate from $150) or whatever it will be I might still be tempted by these.

      @@scottfinlayson8920 I don't doubt New Balance will make great margins from this shoe, but it's not going to move a lot of units when more versatile shoes (that have more mass market appeal) like the Speed exist in that price bracket.

      I have the Saucony Endorphin Speed (if that's what you are talking about) but as much as I like the look and fit of the shoe and the way it causes no trouble getting good lockdown ect... the place where it does lack is in the actual speed, I find it a very slow shoe and wouldn't pick it for any type of race or fast effort. The Pro Plus on the other hand is getting closer but nothing beats the Alphafly's & RC Elite V2's for me and to a lesser extent the Vaporfly's. I dont understand you logic. It is literally cheaper than all other carbon plated shoes(in many cases by a large margin), and also cheaper than the nylon plated Endorphin Speed. It is more comparable in price to many current premium Trainers. NB did a great job bringing their superfoam & carbon in a racer to the market for 150 bucks.
