      @@swkskwwksskdekcdkcdckrvkt 60s were good, obviously, but too many of them were G.I. Joes repackaged and you only had a few actual British figures later in the period. Most of the figures of the 70s were British originals and you had things like the flock hair and eagle eyes.

      Yeah. Wish I'd never got rid of my action man I had in the 70's. Could kick myself. He'd be in my glass cabinet now if I still had him. Had action man tank, boat, cannon. Now they're £200 boxed. Wanted one for ages then earlier this year I went and bought one. A 1982 talking commander with eagle eye Unboxed. Not that keen on the trousers though. I'm now humming and harring whether or not to buy the same action man figure I had in the 70's boxed. At the time I bought the 80's action man they had a 1960s action man pilot painted head. Unboxed priced at £75 same price I paid for the one I have now. To think they were only a couple of quid. Dunno whether or not to see if I can get hold of the one I had in the 70s. He was a soldier and the green beret he had was material not plastic one

    Here's a curiosity: Here in Brazil, about 15 years ago or so, the World Peacekeepers figures were sold in large quantities and at low prices. Because of this, a large number of them were customized with Falcon (our version of Action Man) heads. Before that, Max Steel bodies were used for this type of custom.

    The lack of a weapon doesn't bother me, I grew up with the 1964-1976 G.I. Joe. Inside the box was the basic figure with uniform consisting of cap, boots, trousers, shirt (coverall for the Action Pilot), and dog tag. There was also an assortment of paperwork including a gear and equipment manual and a sheet of rank and name tape stickers to put on the uniform. If you wanted armaments and other basic items of kit they were sold on cards or in window boxes.

    Friday afternoons after school my mum would take me to Woolworths in the small town we lived in ,
    I remember leaving woolies many many times with another new action man ( basic ones ) .
    Then I'd buy outfits or save for vehicles , I played with my action men from the age of 5 right up to my tenth birthday , 1980 to 85 were my action man years , I loved how I could look through the booklets that came with the new figures , I'd find something I wanted and the next week I'd go in Woolworth's with my mum , I'd order the figure or accessory packs ,pay a 50 pence deposit and usually the toy would arrive in the shop on the Tuesday , and I would go crazy with excitement for 3 days until we picked it up ( I remember Woolworths phoning my house just to say the toys had arrived ) I answered it a few times , it was so exciting getting the call and knowing what was in the shop just waiting for Friday to come , 5 years of world building and toy collecting , I can't imagine any modern toy line actually keeping kids entertained of that amount of time , what an amazing time to have been a young lad , growing up in the golden era of toys was amazing .

    Old school boxed action figures often really made great use of having so much "canvas" space; sometimes they were works of art worth display in and of themselves. It was why as a kid I was actually upset over the move to cardbacks which had just the one art plane usually (though G.I. Joe RAH had some great art at least).

    I actually picked this officer cadet boxed yesterday for £35. mine comes with belt, in mint condition and still fastened to the card. Very pleased with it. Mine comes with pistol and holster and tag. Also came across divers uniform still in package so bought that plus a pack of guns and an Action man trunk. The baret on mine has badge. Wish it came with rifle.
    I'm not usually interested in later action man figures but I'm very pleased to have him

    I totally agree with your review. You are right on point. I bought a T Rex Soldier figure for the Uniform and i was shocked at the state of the figure under the clothes. I replaced the figure with a VAM Body which looks ok except for the shortness of the sleeves on the MTP Jacket. I received my Officer Cadet figure a few days ago, the first thing i did was replace the hands with gripping hands and give it an SLR. I also put a 1/6 Dragon Figure working belt on the figure. I have bought VAM elasticated Puttees and VAM feet. I'm going to cut the feet off the Officer Cadet figure and replace them with the VAM feet. Hopefully that will shorten the legs as well. Proportionally i like the slim figure of the Officer Cadet even if i don't like the standard hands or the length of the leg. I intend to mould myself a badge to fix to the Beret. Hopefully all these fixes wont detract from the figure and will only add to it. I would like to see some period accessories like Webbing being produced {hopefully 58 webbing to go with the figure?} My last complaint is the Jumper. While i like the material and it is well made i would have prefared a crew neck Jumper {rather than action mans V neck} over the polar neck on the current figure.With some considerate additions this figure could be a whole lot better. Not sure what to do about the neck joint, that needs looking at but i haven't got round to it yet.

      The odd thing about the box art, is that the 'Action Pilot' picture, is a line drawing of the original 1960's box art. The Action Pilot was the first Action Man I owned, on Christmas 1968, when I was five. The first two outfits I was given with him were the Astronaut, and Deep Sea Diver.

    Good review. Did this company release the Commando and skier, and paratrooper?
    I got some but didn't open them. I wonder what body they had.
    This body, as in peacekeepers, was a possibility for the t rex ones I got, but then I thought perhaps the cotswolds bodies might be a better fit.
    They are an improvement over the t rex ones .
    I note that belt is written on the box for all single figures, but alas, no belts are included. 30 points of articulation is good while wearing the uniform
    I'm not sure what scale these ones are. The headsculpts are good. The company went from the collector pieces (don't know what bodies they used) to the t rex ones, which are a toy for young children .
    I noticed the pilot version of these new additions is a re issue of the t rex using the PK body (peacekeeper). The box similar to the old box has the 30-point articulation logo on it. But if not careful,
    you might end up with the old t rex one.
    Cotswolds again do some awesome cap/beret badges .
    With the longer arms and legs, I wonder how the 1/6 weapons will look

    I agree about the box artwork, it looks lazy. I used to love the old box painted artwork, simply because it reminded me of the painted artwork that was shown over the closing credits of Captain Scarlet! I know, I was an impressionable kid...still am!
    Wouldn't get one of these at all. An action figure that looks too ripped under its clothes is a bit creepy!

    Thanks for making this video. I didn't know there were modern releases of Action Man figures. They do seem to be more of a cash-in on the name than actual reproductions, though.
    World Peacekeepers are much better value. There was a series of them a few years ago, that all came with about seven or eight accessories. They only cost AU$19.95, too. (About twelve or thirteen GBP). I bought a few of them, but I've never taken them out of their boxes. They seem to hold their value, too. I've seen them on eBay for at least double what I paid for them. Still, they're just taking up room in the house and I can't be arsed with selling anything on eBay.

  • @sithcarebear1
    @sithcarebear1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have to agree with you on this one Dave. It’s basically a shameless cash grab playing on the current nostalgia for the original line. Aside from the uninspired packaging, lack of accessories, lack of detailing and flocked hair, and disproportionate body… the figure looks dead to me standing next to an original. The original looks like he has personality and frankly looks embarrassed standing next to such a gangly, lifeless automaton. It’s disrespectful to the name Action Man and they should be ashamed for taking advantage of our love and longing for the simpler days of our youth. I still strongly feel that the best actual toy line on the market right now is the MOTU Origins line which perfectly balances the nostalgia of the adult collector with the playability and visual appeal necessary to attract a new generation of children. Sorry to ramble. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk 😂 Cheers Mate!!👍

      I try to find something positive with all toys, and this does have some good points. But it just feels lazy on the part of Art + Science, and is Action Man in name only. I think the MOTU origins although not perfect are at least doing some cool things.

    It's a shame there aren't better generic bodies out there, I've looked around and many have little key points that are unappealing and aren't very versatile. Mego has been changing their bodies to bandless models, they used some existing molds but made changes where they were needed rather than just using stock parts throughout.
    I often take issue with knee and elbow aesthetics, so many companies do them very poorly and they don't have to. :S Figure that body comes from Anime /Super Hero origins where you get that heavy muscle definition and stretched tall proportion often. Could be worse though for muscle girth, that's small compared to Marvel figures and even with vintage AM the limbs were a tad thin for that torso thickness ijs.
    It's quite a plain product overall, I think they're relying on a foggy memory to sell such things heh.

    Great review Dave! I agree with many of your points, i'm still happy with my purchase, what actually bothers me the most, and which i failed to really mention in my review is the hands, could they not at least made an adjustment to the wrists or something so that gripping hands could have been incorporated instead?

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hands do at least grip. But as this is a off the shelf body and done with little care and attention I doubt they would make any adjustments to it at all. If you want to add the vintage hands some drilling will be required.

      @@toypolloi they could have done better but i wasn't expecting them to.
      I think they know it doesn't matter what they do, collectors want the collection.
      Unless you get a genuine collector managing the project then this is as good as it gets.
      Or get someone with the genuine belief in the concept as a kids toy and make something like 90s action man.
      I don't think a bloke with a stern face can really compete with superhero and other film based figures, and i think the age range has shrunk with video games dominating the market for the older kids who would still otherwise have played with this.
      They don't just have games in the front room for an hour a week now, the games are everywhere, all the time.

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it needs to compete. If they had done it better collectors would be grabbing these by the arm full. These are aimed at adult collectors just because of the brand name. Why don't they just make the original again?

    • @toypolloi
      @toypolloi  ปีที่แล้ว

      They sort of did for the 40th anniversary. But they weren't as good due to quality and plastic issues. Nothing beats the originals to this day.

    There is only One Actionman and that's the versions with Bullet holes across the name on the box.
    No belt...little Johnny might cloak on the clip (even though he's 57)
    No gun.. little Johnny might put it in his mouth mistaking it for a rolly
    No badge little Johnny might poke it up his nose
    And finally..
    No Flocking, might offend little johnnys sensitivity of being bald in a mid life crisis kind of way..
    It just looks so.. is bad too strong a word.
    Best not call the gang down from their Action Tower to watch this, I think they are busy fighting off The Intruder anyhoo...

    First thing I heard about this line was this video. Was excited at first (because I collected several of the AM 40th sets, and avoided the crappy 50th anniversary figures because of the Ken body). Was about to order some and then... You showed the World Peacekeepers body. UGH. HARD PASS. Give me original AM bodies or... I ain't buying. 26 pounds is way too much... It's $46 US shipped with NO weapons or accessories. HARD PASS.

      The 50th Anniversary figures are better than the 40th, they are both of the 1964 GI Joe body type.
      i think you've gotten confused with the "T-Rex" figures they released for kids!

    The reused body from world peacekeepers is pretty lazy, they could have at least made a unique body for it, and yeah no gun is no fun , at least give him a knife or a radio, something

    How can they because they are not Action man. They finished producing Action man in the 80's. That's against copyright. Its like Cadburys doesn't exist anymore. It was taken over There using a famous brand to sell cheap chocolate which is an insult to the Cadburys name

    Difficult to see why anyone would buy this: doesn't seem appealing to an adult collector who, presumably, would want something compatible with their vintage figures/uniforms. What's the point of the Peter Crouch legs when it means that vintage uniforms won't fit, and the new uniform is so rubbish it doesn't include a belt or a cap badge? And for kids - well it doesn't come with any accessories - nothing, zip, nada. So zero playability. What really is the point?

    what a shambles of an excuse for an action man, I certainly won't pay that price for him, like you said I will wait until he gets reduced then I might think about getting one , I think knowing you you will make a badge for him, I have to agree he looked better with the belt and gun.

    Great review mate. None of these re-releases do it for me. I'd much rather have a vintage figure as that is where the nostalgia is. Maybe someday soon I'll have enough spare cash to buy a vintage eagle eyes with blue pants 🙂❤

    I think that, If I wanted an Action Man figure badly enough - I'd get a second hand original one from ebay. This, as you say, is a 'bare minimum' figure, that nothing will fit. A real Action Man, whether painted head or flocked head, will fit all the classic gear. I'd go real or not at all.
    It says 'Action Man', but it isn't really.
    Good review, Dave, and thanks. I'll know not to buy one. 👍👍👍

    • @Zan_Jayna

      @@toypolloi Yes the round shoulder joints are dreadful. The double jointed knees and ankles make them seem broken already. I have the parachute man and I keep him in the box. I opened the diver and he was all right because you can't see the bad joints but he's very floppy. The company who made these are the same people who did those bookcase boxed versions which came with Don Levine's bio book.

    If you are going to create a new Action Man for collectors why on earth would you not do a direct copy? This one is nothing like the original I played with as a kid. I would want fuzzy hair, eagle eyes and gripping hands. Very disappointing.
