  • FLIES AKA THE FLY SEQUEL - Renny Harlin, David Cronenberg - WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie
    In our latest episode of "The Horror Movie That Almost Was" we're taking a look at the sequel to Cronenberg's "The Fly", aptly titled "Flies." Would this have followed in the steps of the original? Would Cronenberg have returned in order to right the wrongs of the sequel we DID get? And could any of the original stars be lured back into the fold? We answer all of those questions and more, so take a look!
    SERIES SYNOPSIS: This series, "WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie" takes a look at the various horror projects that could never seem to get things off the ground, be it for budgetary concerns, creative differences, or just an ever-evolving Hollywood landscape. We dive into every aspect and see just how close these films had come to cameras rolling.

      With how out of control Jeff's character was, to how almost in control his child was, it felt like the story still had one more movie left in it. A third generation that was totally in control of his fly, but lacking humanity perhaps.

    You're drastically underselling the original film. All of the themes you mentioned from the remake were 100% present in the first movie. What Cronenberg added in his version was his typical obsession with "flesh" (a theme that's also explored in his previous films, especially Videodrome) and the pleasures/horrors of the human body. His remake was excellent, but it was built on the foundation of an already great 1950s horror film.

    • @kylkim93
      @kylkim93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've heard the reboot was already planned to have more emphasis on a gradual transformation before Cronenberg came on board. Not to take anything away from how he worked that idea.

    0:55 You watch what you say. The Fly is one of the greatest sci-fi horror movies of the 50's, one of the greatest ever made. It's one of Vincent Price's best films as well, and is still beloved by many. I for one think it's better than the remake. And as for corny, those special effects still get props today. That stuff was cutting edge, especially the fly vision.

    You know, Brundle was disintegrated and reintegrated, so some version of him could still be in the buffer of the machine. You know, kind of like the transporter has a buffer for incoming data in Star Trek. Brundle could literally “appear”, in a earlier non-fly state, inside the machine or somewhere after they rebuild it and find the data that is the Brundle.

    • @echocharliepapa
      @echocharliepapa 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They "bring him back" and nobody knows about the fly. They keep him in the hospital for observation because of the age and condition of his "data", but he grows suspicious and of course it turns out he's a prisoner/property of the corporation. He breaks free and discovers there is a whole facility full of other "recreations" of him in various stages of transformation, and he is only the most recent. They've done this so many times before that they'd grown complacent, but the "data" *had* in fact begun to corrupt (an actual fly shorting a circuit might be too on the nose, but I like it), and this Brundlefly is undergoing a much more rapid (and painful) transformation. This allows him to overpower guards who don't expect him to have developed his strength so soon. He frees the other Brundleflies from their cages, some are recent and even less transformed than he has become by this point, but some are unrecognizable as having any humanity at all. They've been kept in three isolated groupings, that the facility staff have nicknamed "Brundles", "Brundleflies" (they're moved here shortly before the physical symptoms become noticeable), and the titular "Flies", who are inhuman beasts that wreak havoc when freed.

    Yeah, budget concerns with two flies in the 80s or early 90s would have been huge. A lot of the budget for the first one went into the incredible, but screentime-limited, effects and the big name stars. The rest of the movie is so surprisingly small scale the composer easily adapted it to stage. There's like 3 main characters, and a few extras in a small bar, and a handful of sets with almost no exterior shots. Most of the movie's Geena and Jeff talking and moving from one room to another, and their charisma's just good enough to carry the first two thirds of the movie. You try blowing up the scope, you've got well lit houses, schools, drives, friends, child actors, two sets of transforming effects make-up...you've probably doubled the cost and time for making the movie.

    Even though I don't think The Fly ('86) should ever be remade/rebooted again, as a huge fan I can't help but think of ideas for a satisfying continuation of the story.
    Like, it could start with people near/outside Brundles warehouse loft and they hear the gunshot (and screaming) and go investigate it. They arrive just as Stathis and Veronica leave in Stathis's car.
    They go inside and are shocked when they find the Brundlefly's corpse, and think it might be some kind of alien.
    As an idea, I thought the people could be Marky and Tawny. Marky wants revenge on Brundle for breaking his arm, and Tawny knows where he lives.
    Sometime later Tawny discovers that she's pregnant, but what she doesn't know is that she's pregnant with Brundle's baby.
    That's as far as I've thought so far. Also, Tawny wouldn't be the main character for long.

    Jeff Goldblums return? Well, Brundle and the flies’ DNA was interpreted by the teleportation machine and resequenced wasn’t it. So there must be a log of his and the flies’ DNA. So couldn’t he return as a Brundle-Fly clone without his memory and the Lab could use suppressants on him to keep his super strength but not his full transformation?
