I was a college student at the time this came out and I remember walking to campus past this small, independent movie theater downtown that was in an old converted funeral home. I saw the title and it said, "Starring Bruce Campbell" and I just had to see it. I went to campus and finished my classes that day and then walked back to see the times for the show. I bought a ticket and sat in a small theater room with maybe a dozen other people on a Wednesday and watched what I thought was just about the strangest thing I have ever seen on a screen. I absolutely loved it! I catch it every now and again on late-night or something and still love it. Any time I meet someone and I find out they not only know this movie exists but that they love it too they immediately gain a lot of points in my book.
Bubba Ho-Tep definitely one of my guilty pleasures. A friend of mine's who has since passed away is the person that first introduced me to that movie and I'm so glad he did.
Joe R. Landsdale, who wrote the novella that "Bubba Ho-Tep" was based on did write a prequel, "Bubba and the Cosmic Bloodsuckers," which does involve Elvis and Col. Parker fighting vampires. As a fan, I thought it was really good, and it's even better that the book also features the original novella as a bonus.
I'm with Bruce. This is a great movie and not everything needs a sequel. So many classic movies have had crappy sequels that took the shine off of the original movies. S. Darko anyone? I say just let Bubba rest in peace. And re-watch the movie if you need more! The Evil Dead sequels work, and I'm glad they made more, because the second is my favorite and I love the rest, as well. But this movie just wasn't screaming for more. If Coscarelli is going to do anything else, I hope it's a Phantasm 6! Yeah, I know Angus Scrimm died, but it would be nice to continue in some form. The last one was decent and I'm satisfied with it. But I've always wondered what the endgame of the story is.
I think it's pretty obvious. Make a sequel with vampires starring Gary Busey as Buddy Holly, who teams up with Morgan Freeman as Richie Valens. Then you make it a musical like 6 String Samurai and have Brian Tyler do the score again.
I'd be up for that. Although, would the producers trust Busey enough. I love Gary, I think he's amazing, but he doesn't have a good reputation, and that might hurt the chances of it.
@@camerondodge2070 for the budget that they'd likely get, they'd probably do the best they could. Speaking of budget cuts, it looks like we'll have to swap out Morgan Freeman with Keith David. Which is actually better now that I think about it.
I remember meeting Don Coscarelli in 2005 at the Horrorfind convention and asking him about a sequel and he was also talking about the idea that Elvis (in the past) was working on that vampire movie and tells the nurse about it - so basically what you said in the video. Nice to know that, even though the project never started, that still was the idea :-)
I have the double disc edition , the extras are great . I also have the signed hardback which I bought almost 20 years ago , still owing them sais it all - The story / film is A classic that stands on it own !
Yep, I don't think a sequel without Lansdale's involvement would be worth it and I think Bruce Cambell expressed the same sentiment. Still wish Bill Paxton had a chance to make The Bottoms into a movie.
Despite the midnight camp aspects, BHT is a pretty great depiction of how life for the rich and famous often grinds down to the same existential, mortal dread that awaits many or most of us. The good times leave a jaded person unable to be present to enjoy small things, yet the celebrity can trap them in a fishbowl of overexposure and lack of friends to relate to on an equal basis. That may sound lofty for a crazy movie like this, but even the outlandish plot could be a metaphor for how celebrity creates and alternate reality, during and after its high points. In the film (assuming he is really E) E’s identity swap is an escape from the trappings of his fame, the pressure to accommodate so many people’s expectations of him. But even as Sebastian Half (Half a man, even still?) he’s still riding high on the thrill of performing and female adoration. He seemed to have good friends in his alternate life, but no sign of them after the party’s end by hip injury. Not even the excitement of second hand stardom - and a modest money train to ride as tour personnel, still a financial boost for his barbeque buddies who looked like trailer park dwellers. A sidelined “real” Elvis could still have a career in different ways, but now he’s just a nobody, literally alone as never before, and unable to emotionally adjust. It’s flat out depression, which Elvis did struggle with through the 70’s during what could be argued was a long game suicide of drugs and unsustainable lifestyle. Elvis was frequently lonely even with others around, steered by the Colonel and fan expectations away from interesting creative challenges that would have not only inspired him, but exposed him to new people able to expose him to new possibilities in life (like Ann-Margret who advised him any management company would kill to represent him and take new goals seriously) - the very kind of people Colonel Parker always worked to keep out of Elvis’ presence. The proof his paralysis was more from emotional torment, and his addiction to thrills to feel alive, is fighting the Ho-Tep boosts his mood and revives his libido. He also bonds with “JFK” despite his eccentricities making him hard to pin down in terms of their relationship, but considering him a friend nonetheless may illustrate he is accepting a companion divorced of labels and roles (always subserviant outside the Col.) people would always have served in his life. His scatological and impotent sexual fixations are both hilarious, and the sign of the deadened soul of someone so overwhelmed by his life, he just gave up, literally in the story, and he did figuratively in real life. And as sad as it is, his redemption is a whole lot better than what Elvis actually got in his long decline. On that level I consider it a grim black comedy turned hopeful redemption story. That a story so eccentric could capture revelatory notes to even a lifelong Elvis nut like me is a small miracle. In the area of Elvis-related movie of any kind, IMO it is one of the very best, and its high points perhaps the highest of them all.
The sequel to Bubba Ho-Tep, Bubba Nosferatu: Curse of the She-Vampires, kicks off with Nurse Ella reviving Elvis through CPR at the end of the first film. With JFK gone, Elvis teams up with Ella, who agrees to take him to a new nursing home in New Orleans. Here, Elvis faces a vampire menace within the home, echoing the original mummy battle. Flashbacks reveal young Elvis making the chaotic film Curse of the She-Vampires, produced by Giamatti's Colonel Parker, a vampire trying to break into Hollywood by using Elvis's fame. The dynamic between Elvis and Parker, with the latter's biting jabs at the industry and their complex relationship, becomes a standout aspect of the sequel.
Honestly at this point I'm glad this movie never got a sequel. Maybe if they'd struck while the iron was hot, Bubba-Nosferatu could have been great. But that's a VERY BIG MAYBE. As it is, Bubba Ho-tep is a pretty little gem all on its own and that's fun to watch, especially with friends, without having the memory of some terrible sequel hanging over our heads like so many other hit films eventually have. Bubba Ho-tep stands alone. All is well.
I had always heard the second one was going to be a prequel, with Bruce Campbell not needing the aging makeup it would have been fantastic! So sad he had a falling out.
I would love for there to be another Bubba movie. I mean hell look at ghostbusters afterlife and how long it took Bill Murray to come back so could Bruce change his mind eventually? Yeah I hope so. One of the things about his Elvis character is that Bruce still has some time before he ages out of the character. Hell the longer he waits means the less about of makeup he will need to pull off the role.
With the new 2022 biopic movie for E.P, it would be cool if we could get a Bubba Ho Tep sequel someday with Austin Butler as the younger flashback Elvis, however unlikely that is
Id love to see Campbell as Elvis again, but if they made it with a different lead actor the running theme throughout all the movies would be that it may or may not be the real elvis, I would of been pretty kool, as it could of led up to a massive creature show down with ALL the actors who played the lead in one move, all answering to Elvis.
I wish this would have made with Bruce - on the other hand, with plans for releasing more and more and more movies, maybe better it never happened. If only one more movie WOULD have been made, I would have liked to see as Prequelle insted, with some super-absurd-adventure of young Elvis fighting Vampires during filming etc...

Honestly I wouldn't wanna see a Bubba Ho Tep sequel without the late Ossie Davis. He was such a kindly, smart, dignified actor and his chemistry with an often over the top actor such as Campbell, was not just unexpected but perfect. However seeing Bubba Roswell might have been great. Although I don't think the Ho Tep series could fly today or at least the first film. The crazy woke Twitter crowd would stupidly get offended with Davis pretending to be a bleached skinned JFK. It's ridiculous when you think that the movie is only from 2002. They probably could continue with the series but hearing what they did to the Coming to America sequel edgy comedy, especially sequels seem to be in serious decline these days.
Maybe they don't need an Elvis character at all, the concept could work with another icon who has some conspiracies' around their death being faked..... what about Bruce Lee??
Funny how you mention the Army of Darkness crossover comic, but fail to even touch upon "Bubba Ho-Tep & The Cosmic Bloodsuckers" when it's extremely relevant to the topic of the video (more so than the AOD crossover book was)
Abraham Lincoln was ruined because the changed the book, making it more about slavery. The director was a Russian who had a “unusual” take on the book too. It’s quite a waste. The book is well worth a read.
It also has that ridiculous wire fu CGI cartoon style of action. I know movies like Evil Dead and Bubba have ridiculous concepts but their heroes fall.... hard and that's what makes them palatable.
what are you tallking about? in the context of the film, elvis is the real elvis its not "up for interpretation" this is very clear. what movie did you watch?
Mr. Campbell is lucky that he has a movie franchise, a streaming series, and a long, fruitful award winning career to fall back on that he can turn down work.

It's a shame this never got a sequel/prequel. Quite the overlooked gem.

To be honest ,I would not mind an animated version of the Bubba HoTep./ Evil Dead crossover comic.
