      I dunno. I love Kirby's gonzo goofiness so much I can't bring myself to judge him as hard as I probably should. He's just such an unapologetic weirdo I can't help but be charmed by his work.

    • @MercuryKnight5
      @MercuryKnight5 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@jimballard1186 I'm a little jaundiced on Kirby from going back and rereading old Captain America's. When Kirby got the book back in the mid 70's he ran this storyline about a society of bizarrely deformed but completely human people living under NYC who were terrorizing the city. Ordinary citizens, the cops and the city government were helpless to do anything because..reasons, apparently. I mean these ugly guys would just come up at night, break into any home or business and take whatever they wanted, while the normals just shivered in fear. I was like "Okay, Roy Thomas greenlit this why?"

    • @jimballard1186
      @jimballard1186 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MercuryKnight5 Yeah, he returns to that theme too often in his work, which is kind of ironic since even the people he draws who are supposed to be conventionally attractive remind me of the Owl House's abomination creatures (it's a cartoon running on Disney if you don't get the reference).

      I think at this point, Kevin Feige genuinely deserves to be remembered among the greatest of the super-producers. He's the David O Selznick or Cecil B DeMille of the modern era. Although he really needs to bust out that middle initial, so he seems legit. ;-)

      I think aliens actually being the source are little far fetched. But interesting

    • @EasyCure0
      @EasyCure0 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zachcowley779 well some people consider alien life itself a little far fetched. But if you buy into it, even some in that group will think intergalactic travel is far fetched. But if you buy into THAT and realize even modern humans are super gullible to literal fake news, misinformation, and propaganda... It totally makes sense that ancient humans saw things they couldn't explain in a modern sense and giant space ships that carry loads of beings that uses some sort of rocket engine would be simplified ad "a chariot of fire".
      Where History Channel went wrong was pumping out season after season trying to tie everything into the ancient alien theory. Was Hitler developing alien technology?! Did Nazis disappear I to space with aliens?!?!
      The closer you bring it to modernity, the more outlandish it sounds. Not that I necessarily believe in the theory, but if you think of it as a science fiction, it's much more interesting to believe Egyptians we're visited by aliens than fucking Nazis.

      The problem with the Ancient Astronaut hypothesis is, historically, it's always had some uncomfortably close parallels to the "scientific racism" ideas of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At the time, many European writers and mythologists were gaining attention and notoriety for things like claiming Atlantis was an ancient precursor civilization of magic white people that modern Europeans were descended from, and that impressive shit that Europeans were discovering around that time in places like Africa, South America, and remote parts of Asia were actually ancient Atlantean outposts that predated the island's destruction, rather than the achievement of the ancestors of the non-white people's actually living in the area.
      The Ancient Astronaut often kind of exists in the same vein, with the focus of the hypothesis often being on regions of the world like Africa and South America, with people always being like "how could Mayans or Egyptians have possibly built these pyramids?!" with no one ever asking "how did the Romans learn to build roads and aqueducts?" or "who taught Greeks the how to build the Parthenon?"

    • @Gooong
      @Gooong 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Robert-hz9bj I agree about that for the trash Ancient Alien History channel show but not really in the comics. The Ancient Alien trope in comics is used to explain why stuff that we don't have in real life (immortals, mutant powers, world ending gods) came to be.

    About the Thena situation -- Both the Greeks and Romans had multiple variations of Athena/Minerva, most of which were local variation worshiped only in specific city-states, with each putting their own spin on how Athena/Minerva was depicted and what myths were associated with her. Most Greek gods were handled this way. There really isn't a definitive representation for the goddess Athena, so who could say whether or not there were two powerful god like warrior women who were often mistaken for one another operating out of ancient Greece?

    • @johnathonhaney8291
      @johnathonhaney8291 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a bad way of putting it. Still, the all-time champ of mythology confusion HAS to be the Egyptian pantheon. Everybody outside the Osiris cycle of stories had so many damn local and syncretic variations, it's impossible to keep track of a definitive version.

    I do have one problem - how long can Marvel really keep this multiverse bullshit up? DC has done line-wide crisis events to get rid of this stuff, and that was for comics fans. People who like drawing flowcharts and lines between characters and trying to guess whether the bottle of Aquafina in the original Punisher was supposed to be retconned into some sort of secret connection are the sort of folks that they thought their multiverse got a little bit too complicated for. After Loki, we've been straight-out told that Marvel is Rick and Morty now, but with fewer jokes and a little bit more philosophical subtlety. Can we really keep doing this for the literal YEARS that it will take to get to Secret Wars? I mean, I can think of a pretty neat plot thread for Guardians 3 where Peter - who is still having trouble with the whole Gamora thing - is given the opportunity to abandon his found family for the relationship he feels was taken from him and how that can explore themes of peer familial/romantic relationships the same way that the first Guardians movies explored absent and abusive family dynamics, but...years of that? Just thinking about it makes me feel exhausted.

      Got a feeling things will be more compressed in timeframe compared to previous phases. Having Disney Plus shows opens up a lot more storytelling options that I'm sure Feige and Co are going to take full advantage of. All that should mitigate the discomfort.
      Also, unlike WB/DC (who use multiverse bullshit to cover for how they have no plan), MCU typically goes out of its way to make big concepts like this accessible, less Kubrick and more Hitchcock. So we're in good hands.

    As an Irishman in Japan, I ... think I would probably have mixed feelings about an American film with a colour-blindly cast leprechaun character. It would be better than what Hollywood often does, which is cast people with laughably obvious Dublin accents to play people from ancient Macedonia (Oliver Stone's "Alexander"), or cast a guy who makes no attempt to disguise his Irish accent to play a Polish (?) Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter ("X-Men: First Class"). (They get away with this, I think, because Irish accents that don't sound like the Lucky Charms leprechaun -- who doesn't actually sound like anyone in Ireland -- are not recognizable to most Americans as Irish. It's only actual Irish people who are weirded out by it, it seems.) But honestly, if they're going to cast Irish actors in all sorts of inappropriate roles, that would just make it all the weirder (I wouldn't go so far as to say "hurtful", mind you) if they didn't cast an Irish actor in the kind of role that really should go to an Irish actor.
    On a slightly more serious/on-topic note, I wonder how members of the Iraqi diaspora feel about Gilgamesh being played by a Korean-American. (For people who live in Iraq, that's probably another story, but I'm talking about Iraqi diaspora members, who can take pride in the fact that it was Iraq that gave the world its very first literary hero, long before anyone in western Europe or the Americas knew how to read or write.) I'm not sure about Don Lee's background, but he seems to be Korean-born, having acquired American citizenship later, but having lived and worked in Korea for most of his adult life (I say this because I feel like whether he is a member of a minority group is probably important). South Korea, like Japan, seemingly does not recognize dual citizenship but might look the other way for certain celebrities whose American or European citizenship is of benefit to Korea's global image, so the fact that Chosun Ilbo reported that he holds American citizenship is probably irrelevant. english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2019/07/22/2019072200782.html

      Holy shit! I didn't even know who Barry Keoghan was until just now, but like a minute after I posted that comment I noticed that the first paragraph was a lot more on-topic than I thought! Anyway, FWIW, /keɪgən/ as his name is pronounced in this video is almost definitely not the correct Irish pronunciation. You can here the IFTA announcer say it at th-cam.com/video/F5go-JhYesY/w-d-xo.html and a random Dublin radio host pronounce it at th-cam.com/video/n87vqpx7Zrw/w-d-xo.html.
      EDIT: I should clarify that I'm not a prescriptivist about how Americans pronounce Irish names. It doesn't bother me that no one in America (at least last time I checked) can pronounce Domhnall Gleeson's name. If my people's names were easier for foreigners to read, and weren't constantly misread, the world would be a lot less interesting and I'd have a lot less to talk about during lectures and live chats on the topic. I'm just having a bit of fun here.

    So I had this head thing on the X Men rolling around of late in a few talks about ALL THIS with my friend. Exit a Marvel Movie, one with a big splashy finale, say a big battle or some such. Credits roll... After credits a big screen TV in a posh office reports the goings on with it all. Camera pulls back, and there you see a bald guy, a VERY British female professor/researcher scientist what ever... and a young red head... Way younger than they are. A late teen perhaps, almost 18ish. The bald guy says Jean Scott says you are ready as well as the others, I think we may have some work to do. Prep the Blackbird.
    Cut to black
    See in this case it may not BE so hard to introduce the X Men. Logan was a state secret, and probably could still be a wild man in Canada. The X-Men... well they just graduated. So now they are "Ready". Just like I said before and agree NO WOLVERINIE. Instead a teaser trailer where he is on the run, and in Marvel Studios fashion while he is on the run, he runs into FREAKING SASQUATCH Thus bringing D list (Although I loved them) Alpha Flight around, because of course Canada wants in on this whole super hero gig.

    Fun fact. Infinity stones only work in their respective universe. This would allow them to make pretty paperweights.

      @@oscarmccormack1611 Emilia Clarke, Richard Madden, Peter Dinklege (twice), Finn Jones, Natalie dormer, Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. I think there's more but that's on the top of my head. Also, you could say that turner and Williams weren't technically with marvel studios because they were with the X-Men movies at Fox before the acquisition.

      To be fair, if you're going to take anything from Game of Thrones, you take the actors, because they all didn't put a foot wrong throughout that show.
