What Gives Coins Value?

  • In this brief discussion, learn the three most important variables that determine how much a coin is worth. Hint: One variable that has very little to do with value may be the first one that comes to mind.
Welcome to the American Numismatic Association channel! Rod Gillis, ANA Education Director, is here to shed light on what truly gives a coin its value. Join us as Rod breaks down the key factors that determine a coin's worth and dispels common misconceptions.
Rod kicks off by addressing the often-asked question of a coin's value. While many assume age plays a significant role, Rod reveals that it's just one of the variables and may not necessarily correlate with value. Instead, he emphasizes three crucial factors: mintage number, grade or condition, and demand.
Mintage number, the first variable, refers to the quantity of coins produced by the mint. Rod explains how variations in mintage numbers across different years and mints can impact a coin's rarity and value. Contrary to popular belief, age alone does not dictate value, as evidenced by examples like the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel.
Next, Rod delves into the importance of a coin's grade or condition. Higher-grade coins typically command higher prices due to their superior state of preservation. Rod highlights the significance of grading in assessing a coin's value accurately.
Finally, Rod explores the concept of demand as a critical determinant of value. Using examples like Morgan dollars and Peace dollars, he illustrates how coins can vary in popularity and desirability among collectors. Additionally, Rod discusses cyclical coins, such as Buffalo nickels and Mercury dimes, which experience fluctuating demand over time.
In conclusion, Rod emphasizes the multifaceted nature of coin values, urging collectors to consider the interplay of mintage numbers, grade, and demand. I found two 2019 "war in the Pacific" minted at West Point ("w") quarters in a bank issued as yet uncirculated roll...since they are going currently for $26 I thought I'd hang onto them...what boggled my mind was that the same quarter minted in Denver ("d") was listed as a $1 a piece...the whole rest of my roll were "d" quarters for "war in the Pacific" 2019...are people really paying a buck a piece for a coin with more than a billion minted that you can get a roll of by just dropping by your bank for face value?

As with any "collectable" value is based on the decision of the greatest fool. A quarter, no matter what condition, age or rarity is worth twenty five cents unless you find a "fool" that thinks otherwise. The greatest fool sets the highest value.

Good video. The coin that gets me, is the 1899 P Morgan. I recently added a ms 64 to my collection. Why is so little respect given towards that date? Considering it's low mintage.

who told you that 1899 P has no respect? all morgans are respected, even the high mintages. I have a 1883 S that is higher mintage (13 million) and in average shape its around 32 bucks.

How many 1899 Morgans grade ms64 today, not how many were minted? If all but one of a certain mintage were melted down, that one survivor would be worth a fortune, capisce?

Any coin is worth only what someone else is willing to exchange for it. That doesn't just apply to coins, but to everything.
