I think Slenderman lost his popularity because he lost the mystery around him.
With everyone making these extensive backstories on Slenderman, they kinda lost the point of Slenderman and other creatures like him, and that point is that Slenderman is UNKNOWN.
The original images were so creepy BECAUSE you didn't know what Slenderman was, you saw this tall creature in the background of normal photos, without any other context.
A similar thing happened to the Backrooms, everybody kept expanding it and giving it more levels and endings to the point that it lost all mystery around it.

for me Slenderman isn' scary because he can be a threat only nearby forests but in big city he's just a myth.
he just like sirenhead who was forest guy too.
Scary thing in Slenderman lore is hope,there just no hope,if he finds you that means you will die soon but hopeless isn't working for long time so i think that's the reason why everyone forgot about him.
