A really overlooked detail about the Tails sprite is that he has one tail and walks with a limp. Gorgeously edited, I wish more people took note of the quieter efforts of the game.

The weird thing I noticed is that, while I haven't rewatched the entire video yet to check, all of the playable sonic characters aren't called by their actual in-game names next to their life counter except Sonic himself.
Like Mark noticed that the odd yellow character was named "Ray," which isn't a playable character, but Tails at the beginning of the game isn't marked as "Tails" either, he's actually marked by his first name "Miles," which Sega doesn't use that often. Tails is always marked as "Tails," that's why in the opening of Sonic 2 where Tails was introduced, the game made it clear to introduce Tails' full name as well as his nickname in quotes. So if this game is indeed going to become a series, I believe that there is something going on particularly with the fact that the characters trying to escape are being called by human names instead of the goofy names that you'd expect from Sega.

@@thesupervideogamenerdmore3171 That's the good and bad part about both SEGA and Nintendo: Sonic's formula is always changing so the games never feel the same yet at the time when something doesn't work it's just garbage and while Mario games are mostly the same (2D platformers, 3D platformers with a ever slightly so changing mechanic or Party/Racing games who probably no one really accounts for as "true Mario games") and that makes them...eh, just stale. Like not much is changing.

Yea, that part was the scariest and it just messed me up for a bit, I had it stuck in my head, he just smiles like he is enjoying every second of it (like you said and (seemingly) gouging Ray's eyes out with his fingers while Ray screams a bloodcurdling scream of which ive never heard before, I hate that part, its scary and just messed up 😬
I noticed, at around 12:06 that if you pause and unpause as the camera rolls quickly across the screen, you'll see corrupted Amy standing on the ledge.
I also notice that the character standing on the ledge changes each time you boot the game up. Because I got eyeless sonic my first time playing, then I got Ray. So, yeah. Fun little "Easter Egg(?)"

Yeah a lot of people chalk him up as just being some guy who screams at a screen a lot, but he's actually become very resilient to horror over the years and seems more prone to the assclenching kind of fear, which is way more fun to watch when it even does happen

It's interesting to see a lot of the classic creeypasta tropes done with such technical skill here. Sure, the scares are corny, but that's kind of expected, but there's also really clever programming and really beautiful spritework!

yeah I'm not usually into these kinds of games and a lot of them nowadays are kind of lazy cash grabs, but I know effort when I see it and there's so much good content here.
I really like how they took some old game content and meshed it into their own, and vice versa. I'd be really interested in seeing them do games outside of the cheesy jumpscare/creepypasta genre. I really think they could make a quality game, especially with the spritework and the original level designs they created. good stuff!

I think this game needs subtlety. Horror doesn’t really work when everything’s nonstop sudden scares like “oh there’s a friend annnnd he’s dead, oh there’s an enemyaaaannnd he’s dead, oh there’s and dead”. I found myself laughing hysterically every time a jumpscare happened just due to how absurdly over the top and sudden everything was. Horror isn’t about the scares, it’s about the anticipation of the scares, the ambiance/mood. A good horror game will make you afraid when absolutely nothing is happening. I just think this game needs to dial it way back and set the mood first.

Was looking for this exact comment. Every scare just amounted to 10-15 seconds of silence with a creepy image on the screen and then immediate jumpscare. Now, I suffer from anxiety so it still works on me to an extent, but it still had me rolling my eyes every time I saw it because I knew it was coming. I think a game like this would do great if there was subtlety to all of the corruption that was going on
Well its a good thing you're not on the development team then, I love the jumpscares and the obvious horror. Why would a demon need to be subtle? It's not like it needs to hide its identity.

From a more logical point (ig?), yeah, there’s not really a reason to. You’re entitled to your opinion, I’m not gonna say it’s wrong or stupid. Honestly I agree with it sometimes.
Even so, a game tends to be scarier and more impressive in people’s eyes if it first sets up a good atmosphere that keeps you on edge without the use of “JUMPSCARE NUMBER 1!! SCARY IMAGE! JUMPSCARE #2! GAME? NO! JUMPSCARE!” Most horror games include jumpscares. We expect them. Hell, look at people like Moist Critikal or ThafNine- half the time they can perfectly predict when a jumpscare’s gonna happen because of how many they’ve played. It’s a constant cycle of waiting for a jumpscare, getting spooked by it for a second, and waiting for the next (etc. etc.). Having a rich atmosphere that keeps you engaged and sets one or none up rather than loudly shoving one in your face as a cheap scare every two seconds can really make a difference.
Personally, I think the Devs could space some of the scares out. Or add more gameplay in between to justify them. Or something along those lines. But I also think it’s okay the way it is. Like you said, why would a demon need to be subtle?

I kinda feel like the "horror" parts of this game just kind of did random things like it was going down a list of psychological horror concepts + Sonic horror concepts. The technical aspects of the scares are actually really solid, but they're mostly just standard jumpscares. The shaking window, the window messages, and ESPECIALLY the attempting to start your webcam for the "I want to see you" bit were actually kinda neat.
But for the same token, the Crystal Lake segments of the game just struck me as a legitimately impressive Sonic ROMhack, disconnected from the horror bits. I'd actually kinda like to see a non-horror Sonic ROMhack from this guy.
Yeah this game mainly was cringe, but then again I have the attention span of a gnat.

Ray, for those who are uninformed, is one of Sonic's friends from the Genesis Era. He was introduced alongside Mighty in an arcade game called SegaSonic The Hedgehog. It was one of their only appearances in games besides a couple nods and references in other titles and also being supporting characters in the Sonic Comics. They return as DLC in Sonic Mania

6:48 can we take a moment to appreciate how absolutely gorgeous this sprite art is? I’m a huge sucker for sprite art and I’ve seen some great stuff before but…. Wow, legitimately beautiful work

The color choice is lovely, the way the shape/base of the sprite design is drawn is pretty bad
The lighting is so beautiful, it makes me want to day dream
Not to mention the music was phenomenal. It had that classic ocarina of time mixed with classic sonic music typa vibe to it and I loved it!
Only problem is Sonic's running animation, it looks weird somehow.
I somehow got the feelings that Ray screaming in pain is like the bite of 87..

The game itself has so much potential, the scene with Eggman was absolutely chilling, I just think the problem is that a lot of the horror is built on shock value, with a lot of murder happening. It'd be great if instead of immediately going "OOOOoOOooOOh blood and the voices" they would build up tension and genuine anxiety so the more surprise elements of horror feels more deserved.
Well, they are going for the classic .exe 'ooooh blood and voices' thing. But I can argue that that in itself can be made better. Such as cutting out the scary introduction...it was a great animation sprite but they seem to be going at a direction that once the player opens the game, that's when the monster activates or becomes aware, and starts killing which is why they constantly say that you, the player, is at fault for playing and making these characters exist - Yet that also means the monster shouldn't be present at first; It's just woken up. This will give a better outlook of 'lulling you into a sense of safety', and it would make sense if that was the direction they were going.
The murder is something forgivable considering this was supposed to be a bloodthirsty monster that woke up all of a sudden, as if it was paused from its goal and the player activating the game brought its goals back in mind, and immediately starts killing. Somewhat like this monster was the same monster from the first Sonic.exe game, and headed for this game to kill, but couldn't do so until a player activates the game.
Otherwise, the art, references and programming is absolutely awesome! So many references to the actual Sonic game, such as knowing Tails' real name, and the general vibe of it. The horror element was jumbled, but with a bit of criticism, which hopefully goes right, this could legitimately be a W for old .exe and previous Sonic games.
I think they did just that with the last Tails bit. Having to go lower and lower, the subtle details of the missing tail and limp, the increasing desperation on his face and body language, it all added up into something genuinely unsettling. (And not just because my childhood was being turned against me.
to be honest i think the best part of this game is crystal lake. the whole atmosphere of like a golden age "before things went wrong" type of area is just so beautiful in a horror game like this
Sonic EYX doesn’t have really any shock value in it, and for the bit of it that it does have its executed brilliantly it has great tension build up before its jump scares and doesn’t really on blood and gore and the fact that sonic eyx actually looks creepy with his 1 eye (and massively dilated pupil at times) and painfully stretched limbs as opposed to sonic exe’s mega cliche black and red eyes and dependance solely on excess and hYpEr ReAlIsTiC blood (in a 16 bit game...?)for its lackluster spook factor

Depends on the game. Psychological horror gets him more often, but he's become desensitized to most gory and jumpscare titles

@@kenwao542 honestly as an experienced 500+ hours phasmophobia player, phasmophobia isnt even slightly a scary game. The models, animations, "ghost events" are just awful. The game gets you and makes you scared for a while but you get used to it really damn fast. After that it's all about speedrunning or chatting with people.

I talked to one of the developers, it’s not actually trying to access anything. It’s manually triggering those pop ups and the way the game plays makes it a really convincing illusion. So cool!

It's really interesting to see visual tropes from series like the Walten Files and Mandela Catalogue popping up in something like this - it's pretty effective! The actual scares are still very traditional, goofy creepypasta bombast - assuming they were just playing into tropes for the fun of it, I would still like to see someone buck tradition and try for for actual creep factor one of these days. Still fun little nostalgia trip!

@@Jig_up I'm not going to say this game is "horror", because I'm not really scared. But I'd agree that Sonic.exe is far more then a mere meme. And compared to the earliest iterations of the character in an interactive format, or the original story, which haven't aged well in the slightest, this is one of the best showings of the character. Creepypasta games that actually capture the spirit of the source story are an incredible rarity. Maybe not horror, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued by the plot. While I don't think anything will surpass Coronation Day, otherwise known as just "the", a playable Super Mario World romhack of impeccable atmosphere and storytelling, this piece certainly stands out, if for no other reason then things like its impressive collection of original art assets. I'll be looking forward to its further development for sure.

I want there to be a sonic.exe game that's literally just an emulator of the classic sonic games, but with small chances of things popping up. Honestly, I'd love to see Mark play an actual Sonic game just to see what he'd think of them after being primarily exposed to the series through games like this.
That said, this one looks awesome. Great spritework, actual levels, decent scares, and it actually plays like a Sonic game at times. Mad props to the devs here

Still might not be the best choice for first Sonic game for him, even though I love that game to death I think Adventure or Sonic Mania would be a better fit... I would love to see him play Unleashed
