    Hey guys, I just got the Smart Grinder Pro but I really love the simple aesthetic of the Dose Control Pro. Question. Do you think the hoppers are interchangeable? I ask because I purchased a single-dose hopper that was 3D printed from Amazon. Works very well with the Smart Grinder Pro but wondering if it would fit the Dose Control Pro. Let me know! thanks!

    The Dose Control Pro is a good grinder but the impeller wears out because it is cheaply made. The impeller stopped pushing out coffee after a year of two or three double shots a day. So, I bought a 3D printed replacement impeller and put it in myself and it's been working great for over a year and hasn't worn down like the old.

      @Wholelattelovepage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Photog, The Breville grinders are on the budget price side of espresso grinding. For low volume home use they will serve your needs and the Duo-Temp well. If you want to move up to a more ruggedly built espresso specialist, there's no substitute for a grinder with stepless grind size adjustment and larger burrs. This type of grinder will last for decades and produce a grind capable of serving higher-end machines should you upgrade. There are many options in that category. One of my favorites is the Ceado E5P: www.wholelattelove.com/ceado-e5p-electronic-coffee-grinder

    I am going to buy a grinder and an espresso machine. I figured Sage BCG820 and Gaggia Classic would be a decent choice. What do you think? Thank you!

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mFCR, The Gaggia Classic Pro is IMO the best premium entry-level espresso machine. It is a true machine with commercial size/weight 58mm portafilter. The Sage/Breville Smart Grinder Pro can work. Be aware the grinder is more of an appliance grade product with a lot of plastic used in construction. Also, it tends to be a little clumpy at espresso grind size, slow in grinding compared to others and lacks super fine control of grind size. That said, it can get the job done but is a bit of a compromise. If you have the budget I'd have a look at machine grade grinders from Eureka or Bezzera. They have some lower cost options like Bezzera's BB005: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bezzera-bb005-automatic-grinder or Eureka's Silenzio: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/espresso-grinders/products/eureka-mignon-silenzio-16cr-grinder-in-white

      Hi TS, You are welcome! That can work but definitely not my first choice. They are somewhat slow, produce a clumpy grind and lack super precise grind size adjustment which makes a big difference in potential espresso quality. Currently the most popular pairing with the Gaggia Classic is the Baratza Sette 270. Hi, I just ordered the smart grinder pro. What grind setting would you recommend for pour over?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      HI Matthew, Pour over typically uses a grind size similar to that of drip coffee. We'd start in the middle of the drip range on the display of the SGP. From there you can adjust based on taste and coffee used. Here's a video that gives visual reference of grind size for different brewing methods: th-cam.com/video/bgJ8E6e8rko/w-d-xo.html
      Flavor wise, we typically use a slightly coarser grind for darker roasts. Bitter notes may indicate over-extraction so grind a little coarser. Sour notes may indicate under-extraction so grind a little finer. That's an oversimplification as variables like coffee dose, bean type, brew water temperature and brew time play a role as well. Hope that helps and enjoy your new grinder!

      I wouldn't trust baratza as far as I could throw it. Had the virtuoso - it destroyed itself while trying to grind coffee on the finest settings, and I am now looking for a different grinder. While I was trying to get a grind fine enough for turkish coffee, I'd expect the grinder to just not get fine enough results if it couldn't grind that fine, not destroy its own motor or coupling to burr trying. So, yeah - NOT impressed with baratza's durability.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi brolly, thanks for the question. I have not measured the SGP for retention. Honestly most users of this level of grinder are not concerned about retention. I can say this, the path from the burrs of the SGP to delivery is short so retention should be relatively low. Also, burrs are smaller so not a lot left their either. I would keep this in mind. If grinding for regular drip coffee in larger amounts retention is not a huge concern. Depends on how much your grinding, but if doing pots at a time any retention would be a very small percentage of the amount ground. The Sette 30 is louder than the SGP but it's a heck of a lot faster. At drip sizes it grinds about 4g/sec. If retention is a concern the Sette can single dose and retention if you grind all the beans out is typically

    • @Wholelattelovepage

      Hi Madison, Your question will be answered!
      Grinder: The Breville Smart Grinder Pro is an option. It tends to produce a clumpy grind and is rather slow but can serve your Duo-Temp. Next step up in quality is the Baratza Vario but it's nearly double the price: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/all-grinders/products/baratza-vario-grinder-w-metal-portaholder
      Advice: If extractions are slow that usually means your grind is too fine. Here's my video on how to dial-in grind size: th-cam.com/video/jOY7D02n4Cw/w-d-xo.html
      Here's what I would do using your machine:
      1. Use the larger single wall (non-pressurized) filter basket.
      2. Fill the basket loosely with ground coffee and level off gently without compacting coffee.
      3. Tamp coffee firmly and try an extraction. If too slow increase grind size and try again. If too fast decrease grind size and try again - this is the dialing-in process.
      4. When dialing-in keep all variables other than grind size as consistent as possible. So use same dose of coffee, same pressure tamping, etc.
      Beyond that use best practices like warming up your machine, keep the PF in group when not in use so it stays warm, etc.
      Hope that helps!

    Can the smart grinder make fine enough coffee for rocket espresso machines?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AJ Jasper The smart grinder is passable for use with Rocket Espresso machines. Not exactly our first choice but you could get by with it. Some things about the Smart to keep in mind if pairing with a Rocket:
      Rocket machines are considered to be at the "sexy" end of espresso machine design for their counter top appearance. So a flashy take on traditional espresso machines. They tend towards a pure appearance with no visible digital displays (removable on machines like R58/R60). The aesthetic of the Breville doesn't really compliment that. Also, the case of the Breville is predominantly plastic. Those are things that don't effect performance but some would say the design of the two clash a bit. Performance wise... most people going with a prosumer level machine would pair it with a more solid prosumer level grinder. The Breville has a rather narrow adjustment window in the espresso grind size range. If a problem one can generally get around that with dosage adjustments. On prosumer level grinders you will get larger burrs, more precise grind size adjustment, more powerful motor and durable metal case. We'd be a little concerned with the Breville getting heavy consistent use. It's more appliance like as opposed to prosumer level grinders designed/built to go for many years.

    What would you recommend between the 2? We normally weigh the beans we need and then grind. We are between these 2 we're just not sure if it's worth the extra $50 for the smart grinder.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jason, If you are doing espresso only and pre-weighing then the Dose Control should suit your needs. If you brew using other methods also then the Smart Grinder Pro is a good multipurpose grinder.

    Other than the fact that the doe control has a smaller height, I think that 820 is much easier to use. I constantly adjust the grind size according to the coffee beans, and it's much simpler to do with the 820. And most of the settings are easier to do with 820. The digital display is a plus, but that can add to a distress if it fails. I had a problem with the first one I bought as the display failed after a few days. I sent it to Breville and the sent me a new one. I really like the Smart pro.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carlos, Sorry to hear you had issues using oily beans with your grinder. Breville tends to pack a lot of features into their grinders at a lower price point. At that lower price you typically get motors with less power than competing grinders and more plastic used in construction. As mentioned at appox 11:45 in video these grinders may not be the best choice in heavy use applications especially when grinding oily and/or dark roasted beans.

    • @27westmount
      @27westmount 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I would grind "oily" beans, would I have to clean the burrs often?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      27westmount Cleaning the burrs will help. It depends on just how oily the beans are. Also be careful with the "appliance" type of grinders featured in this video when using extra oily beans. They have less powerful motors which may have trouble with very oily beans - especially when grinding in fine ranges for espresso.

    I'd like to know what's the best SIZE of grind and AMOUNT of grind time for a smooth and consistent espresso coffe ? I have a Mr. Coffee Barista Semi Automatic espresso machine.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi LF, So your machine uses a pressurized filter basket. With those,
      grind size is not super critical as it is for standard non-pressurized
      baskets. But, you do want a very fine grind - it should be a little
      finer than granulated sugar. Can't really give you a number for your
      grinder as every grinder (even same make/model) is a little different.
      As to amount to use, I'd fill the filter basket and then tamp it a bit
      before attaching to machine.

    You made a statement that really confused me at the end of the video . you said that darker roasts contain more oil. i believe it's light roasts that contain more oil . when they are roasted , the oil rises to the surface , kinda like bbqing a steak . the roasting process is a drying process it cannot oil. in fact, i 've only one article that concurs with my belief

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MV, I was referring to surface oils on the bean. Roasting darker tends to bring those oils to the surface. I think I see where you are going with more oils remaining in the beans in lighter roast.

    I just bought a Smart Grinder Pro and I'm still getting used to it. I came from a Cuisinart grinder that recently bit the dust and that one always ground very coarse, even when I set it almost to fine. It never ground fine enough for espresso. Anyway I set it [Breville Smart Grinder] to 40 (right in the middle of the "drip" area) and using a very dark bean. I noticed the flavor change right away. Very bitter! lol Anyway, I'll just change that up to 48 or so.

    Piece of junk. Cheap plastic impeller below the burrs which gets sandblasted in about a year of moderate use. This causes the grinder to clog.
