  • 🫨Stan and Rhonda share with their viewers their first shakedown trip in their brand new Grand Design Influence 2903RL. They get off to a rough start just getting out of their side yard and down their driveway. A few miles down the road they hear something rattling in the back of the truck and they have to make an emergency stop along the highway. They install a few upgrades they feel are the most important and change out the stock mattress. Come with Stan and Rhonda as they share their first trip ever pulling a fifth wheel trailer.

    I think the more you tow the 5th wheel you’re gonna see how much better it is than the bumper tow.

      @BillUtah 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I went from a Grand Design 17MKE being towed by a 2019 Silverado 2500HD double cab SB 4x4 (so overkill for that small trailer) to a Rockwood 2622RK being towed by a RAM 3500 crew cab 4x4 long bed (again, over kill for a 10k 5th wheel) and I’ll take towing the old rig over the new one. Got into some serious winds in Nebraska and Iowa this last week and it was throwing the trailer and truck around like a rag doll.
      We love the extra space but definitely miss the clear bed for our e-bikes and stuff.
      And I won't talk about the over 13 foot height…. 🙄

    Hi Stan & Rhonda. Wow, tucking that fifth wheel in next to your garage and getting it back out again looks like a challenge requiring full attention from both of you. Man, that rear rain gutter spout was touch and go!
    We just got our first fifth wheel last week after 4 travel trailers. It towed nice and steady. I definitely found out like you did that it responds slower when backing, it takes a little extra time to react to steering input. My wife & I do like you do and use our cell phones to communicate while maneuvering.
    We love the Lippert Ground Control 3.0!
    After each trip you get more and more comfortable. Happy trails…

The truck has done incredible!! I think our truck is really happy. Fuel mileage has stayed the same. Will be back home for a couple of months and we will be off again. Maybe even into Canada. We’ll be home for the winter and off hopefully God willing off to the Florida Keys in spring.

    Always check that the 'snap jack pins' on your front landing gear going ALL THE WAY THROUGH the tubular metal wall before putting weight on them.......I have seen too many times that people rely on them "automatically" going through, or snap into place, and they didn't quite go through and then the weight of the 5th wheel goes on them and they BEND. Just FYI.

    We have the S2930RL (older version). You can raise the rear jacks at least 1 set of bolt holes. That will give you clearance that you need for your driveway.
    You may want to inspect the lag screws on each side of your bedroom where the wall meets the framing. Most GD 5th wheels have undersized lag screws (3/8” instead of 1/2” - the frame was drilled for 1/2” / also there are likely missing lag screws on each side). You can check these yourself and correct this while brand new and before any issues arise.
    Happy camping!

    On our 2600RB the door latch constantly works it's self open and we have to always deadbolt it when traveling. It did it with the factory latch and the RV Lock latch. I called RV Lock and they sent me a deeper strike plate and it still happens. the deadbolt keeps the door closed going down the road but we have to push the door in every time before unlocking the deadbolt so the regular latch engages.

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Sean, what we discovered is that we had to take more material out of the door jam. The deadbolt on the RVLock was not extending all the way. If the deadbolt can’t extend completely, you can simply push it and it will unlock. Once we got more material out no more problems. Thank you for joining us. Stan and Rhonda🙏🏼❤️

  • @Wandering_Kerrs
    @Wandering_Kerrs 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Our RV Lock did this. The vibration of the door would cause the deadbolt to move inward enough for the door to open. It took a while to find it. When the door comes open, check to see how far out the deadbolt is. Push on it with your finger. Ours pushed in very easy. the deadbolt was pretty sloppy allowing the vibration to make it come off the latch cam. RV Lock replaced the lock and so far so good. On the new one the dead bolt does not have as much slop and it requires more force to put it in and out. Best Wishes! God's blessings!

    9:09 your rear leveling jacks are fine. As you can see coming out the driveway, the rear end of the trailer would hit hit if the jacks got close. This is called the departure angle. The imaginary line from the tire where it makes contact with the ground to the rear hitch is the plane to stay above . And it looks like your jacks are above the plane. Hope that makes sense.

    Hey Stan… did you say 40 PSI in your air bags?
    When I first put mine on my Ram 2500 (2300# pin weight on my 5er) I put 25# in mine. Truck rode like the axle was welded to the frame.
    Talked to my brother who has experience with them and he laughed. Told me try about 7 to 10 PSI. MUCH better!

    • @OverTheHillAdventures
      @OverTheHillAdventures  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      So this is what I discovered. These new air bags are heavy duty. I’m running them right at 25lbs now! They are just an 1/8 above the helper l leaf spring. I ran with 10lbs on the Million Dollar Highway that was definitely not enough. When I hit the expansion joints on the road I can feel it bottoming out the leaf springs. It’s running really nice now the truck is level. Thank you for the comment I’m sure lots of folks our learning from this. Thank you! Stan and Rhonda🙏🏼❤️

    Well, that was certainly a nail biter getting y'all's rig out of the driveway!! Yikes!! We certainly have been in some really tight spots, too (lost a kitchen window to a branch I didn't see one time). So, how's the new rig towing for you? Is your mileage different with the new rig than what y'all were towing before? We're still thinking about a small 5th wheel but still need to shop and compare prices. Then, there are the 9%+ interest rates! 🤢🤮
    Safe travels, and God bless y'all!

      Hello Bob and Dottie, so good to hear from you! We are about 5,000 miles in and love it! Our gas mileage is about the same. Remember you don’t pay more 30% of asking. 100K rig you should only pay 70K. US Bank 7.1%. Second home so you right off the interest. We are currently in Rocky Mountain National Park. We have lots of adventures coming up. Blessings to you both, Stan and Rhonda🙏🏼❤️

      @OverTheHillAdventures - We've been looking around, and we're seeing asking $65K marked down to $40K - $45K. We can knock that lower by selling our current trailer. The ones we're looking at are about 29' long with a GVWR of 10,000# (the legendary mythical half-ton towable). Be glad y'all don't live in Texas; y'all's current rig would require I obtain a Class A Noncommercial Driver's License (Truck GVWR + Trailer GVWR > 26,000#). Fortunately, Arizona doesn't require that.
      Safe travels, and God bless y'all!

    I'm not picking on you, no offense intended. BUT so many people when they hit retirement age buy these large 5th wheels, Class A's. Many have never driven anything larger than their Honda Civics or their 1/2 ton p/u. It's a whole new world for them. Reaction time slows with age, consideration for meds. that might influence reaction time. There are many of us seniors (I'm 68) just shouldn't be driving/pulling large rigs or any for that matter. I think education and training should be a National mandate. I kinda do know what I'm talking about. Early in life I drove semi's, heavy equip op for 20 plus years, over 2 Mil. miles accident free, Sheriff's Deputy for over 17 years. I've seen way too much carnage because of inability, inexperience and proper training.

      Hi Richard, thank you for your service. I’m a retired Sergeant from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. I did 27 years and retired 2019. I was also the commander of the for the Bear Valley Search and Rescue team. Drove a Ford F450 and towed a 26,000lbs snow cat. I will never buy a Ford.
      Towing a fifth wheel is much easier than pulling our old bumper pull. Having said that, our fifth wheel is pretty small in comparison to others. We are only 34’ 4” only 4 feet longer than our longer than our bumper pull. We are shorter in over all length. We choose an active life style unfortunately many folks decided when they retire it’s time to die on a couch! We try to inspire folks to get active and enjoy their retirement and find their new adventure. I will agree there are some but very few that should not be on the road. 98% will out drive a youngster. I’m 62 and love our life. The guy next to me is in his late 70’s driving a million dollar rig in great shape! Thank you for joining us! I encourage to subscribe to our channel and get to know us.
