David, excellent question and something that took me a while to understand. Getting a 'lifer' is when a birder sees a bird species they had not seen before. Example: A few months ago, I was in Galveston TX, and saw several Seaside Sparrows. Since I had never seen this species before, it was a 'lifer' or 'life bird' for me.
