I'd only got five species the previous years too! Happy birding!
Wooo! Thanks for doing the challenge! Was cool to see it done in a warmer climate 👍
Thanks!
House Finch IS native to N. America. Maybe you are confusing them with the House Sparrow?
Oops! The house finch is native to western North America. It was introduced into the eastern side in the 1940s.
I use it with my canon EOS-R , very nice, I'm very happy with the purchase, and used for a variety of situations, yes even portrait photography ... delicious 😋
Good stuff bro 💪
Beautiful bird. Great pictures.
Hey! Just came across your channel and it’s great to find more birding content creators on TH-cam. I can personally attest that I love the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge as I have been there 3 times since I am Utah based. Look forward to visiting more of the spots you mentioned in the future
Thanks for the comment! I've enjoyed watching several of your videos as well.
What a good deal.
I live in the southeastern US. I think I might be able to tell the difference, I’m just not sure enough to risk the safety of my small dogs. I’ll try to get a pic, but from what I can see when I’m looking up as they soar overhead, is a large dark bird with a silver line/streak from one wingtip all the way across to the other wingtip . They appear when I take my dogs out and disappear when I take them in.
That sounds like a turkey vulture. Hawks are rarely a dark color. Some species have a 'dark morph' but they do not have any silver on their wings.
@ Thanks for responding. I’ve pretty much come to that conclusion too. However, there was a crazy day in July of ‘23, when a huge bird carrying a rabbit nearly ran me over when I let my dogs (under 10 lbs) out in the yard to play. A short while later a bear slammed the house with our garbage can. It was a “wild” day to say the least. Now I’m very cautious when it comes to large birds.
Great fun! Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Again, Nothing showing you how to create a checklist so you can upload media. You get that printable checklist and that's it? I still have zero checklists.
To learn how to make a eBird checklist so you can upload media, check out my full ebird tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/MxerEsKQCg0/w-d-xo.html Let me know if you have any more questions! ~Caleb
I dont see how to submit a checklist. All i see is "My check lists" with nothing to add. Not helpful.
This video explains how to submit photos once you have made a checklist. To make a eBird checklist, check out my full ebird tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/MxerEsKQCg0/w-d-xo.html Let me know where I can help! ~Caleb
i can identify birds
Great!
Big Bend National Park just became much higher on my priority list
Big bend is awesome! I was there in March. Too early for the Colima Warbler but Mexican Jay and Scott's Oriole were both lifers for me!
@ those would all be lifers for me, I will have to make my way down there sometime in April or May for the Colimas!
We use the window decals and they do work to prevent bird strikes. Thanks.
Any other reason for bouejays going crazy besides an owl or a hawk? Im in southern NJ and I hear them allllll the time
Blue Jays often make noise when flying in a flock. They could also be mobbing a raccoon or something. They are definitely not quiet birds!
@betterbirders appreciate the reply! Yeah they sure are loud and I do enjoy seeing them drop by the water fountain pushing out any bird in there 🤣 they're punks
Thanks for highlighting this wonderful bit of our history. Anyone in the US who loves birds of prey should be grateful to Rachel Carson for shining a spotlight on this travestry.
Better Birders comes through with more practical advice!
We like diving deep!
Hello, I need your help. I recorded a video of a bird that I can’t 100% confirm any help would be appreciated TIA I can send it over if that’s ok
I'd be happy to take a look! Can you upload the video to google drive or dropbox and send me a link? Or, you can upload it to youtube and send the link. Just paste the link in a reply to this comment.
@@betterbirders hello I just posted it ! Hope it’s good enough for you to distinguish what it is !!
The slight V shape of the wings makes me think Turkey Vulture. The fact that the bird was all black means it can't be a hawk. The two expected eagles (Bald and Golden) have at least some white feathers and the bird in the video did not. Overall, I think Turkey Vulture is the best candidate. Hope this helps! ~Caleb
Hello, I have a video of a bird and I’m doing research I just saw this video and I’m still wondering 😅 Any help would be awesome If I can send you the video through email or any other kind of platform let me know I have a neighborhood app post and the comments are ranging from eagle to buzzard to vulture to hawks haha
Sorry to impose If I can get an email address Or if you have Instagram X Facebook So I can send you the video and you can help clarify My neighbors are in a comment war because they all think different things lol
Sorry! I've sent 2 replies but it seems like they aren't going through! You can send the video to betterbirders [at] gmail[dot]com. If you can, include the date and approximate location. Thanks!
the hawk looks really mad.
Thanks for the closeup shots! I've seen too few of these.
When i was a kid in the 90's, we were told we never had them around here, only to have seen them in the area for several years already. They weren't nearly as common as today, but there has been some confusion over their population and ramge over the decades.
This is one of the most underrated channels on the entirety of TH-cam. You consistently produce some of the best birding content I’ve found on the platform to the tune of 50-100 views on average. I really have no idea how you’re not pulling in more people, but I highly appreciate your continued output of high quality birding guides.
Thank you so much!
Fort de Soto is so amazing in spring migration! Unfortunately Hurricane Idelia chased Pinky away from St. Marks...but there's another great birding spot in Florida called Merritt Island NWR that does currently have a group of flamingos since Idelia.
Amazing 😮
Beautiful birds ❤❤❤
Absolutely beautiful species of birds 🤩💞 and yes showcase some more 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽
nice 😂
Six for me, another great quiz and so useful for improving my identification skills - as you may well know, in Europe, wading birds / waders are what US ornithologists call shorebirds, so I was half expecting Pectoral Sandpiper, Killdeer etc - do you gave a gulls quiz by the way?
Six is still pretty good! Gulls and Terns video is here: th-cam.com/video/XhXpAksKXpc/w-d-xo.html
Now that you can find more birds, here are six common species for you to find: th-cam.com/video/DNCp6OrLT2I/w-d-xo.html
Check out the tripod I use for this scope: th-cam.com/video/_kwFaIZexb0/w-d-xo.html
Excellent advice delivered in a concise way, so thanks!
Glad you found it helpful!
Definitely the earlier in the day the better. Also, really look at every bird you see, including all flyovers while going slowly. Learning bird songs and calls is incredibly important.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing.
I have preferred Nat Geo over the years. It was so much better than the Golden Guides and Peterson. But I’m coming around to Sibley’s especially the 2nd edition. (By the way, Nat Geo’s most recent edition is the 7th. I notice you showed the 4th edition.) Nat Geo has more text as you noted. It also shows more of the most rare species. What I have noticed about Sibley is that he shows in his illustrations points that aren’t mentioned in text. When you learn a “new” ID tip, Sibley already showed it, even if he didn’t specifically state it.
Great fun! Keep them coming...and thanks.
At last! A full house! Though I have to admit I did use “Lapwing” rather than the full and more correct “Northern Lapwing” - thanks again for another clear and informative quiz
10/17. Not too bad I guess. I didn’t know 5 of the species. I am not familiar enough with yellow-rumpled warbler to get it here, and I guessed wrong with the carolina/black-capped chickadee, accounting for my other 2 mistakes. Cool video!
Hi! Is eyerelief changed when zooming?
Great question! The eye relief does not change when zooming. If you have any more questions feel free to ask!
@@betterbirders Thanks for reply. So you mean when you zoom you don't have any limited image on and you don't have to adjust you eyecups to fit your eyes to see proper and clear image? Why am I asking... My scope has floating eyerelief and at high magnification I have limited image and I forced to close eyepiece cup to see a little better. At low magnifications eyerelief is enough to see proper image.
When I use this scope, all I have to change when zooming in is adjust the focus knob a little. I don't have to adjust the eye relief at all. Hope this helps!
@@betterbirders Thanks for your help! Useful information from you.
Love from UK❤...Good video
Go to Dinky Creek and do some birdwatching. I have a friend that is a advert birdwatcher. I don’t remember what kind of birds, but he’s got picture of a some rare bird there at dinky Creek.
