    Thanks so much for the plug Ralph! I was just like u and didn't even notice the difference until it was pointed out to me, so I'm actually really glad you reached and confirmed with Code Mystics that it was just a sprite/art change. Agree that it was awesome of A1up to even release a cab with new arcade controls, so it'll only get better with all our feedback. thx again!

    Ralph, Sega did indeed have the license for Ferrari, but it ran out. That's why Outrun 2 was taken down from the PlayStation and XBox stores.

      @@RetroRalph What's interesting is the car they're using in this version is the same car in the 3ds version of Outrun. That has me wondering if they're using a variation of that rom. Since AM2 did that one, it's pretty amazing but it's 3d of course. Sega did eventually get a Ferrari License and did F355 Challenge on Dreamcast and you probably remember Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast. All of this has me wondering if they'll do Afterburner? That could be cool! Sega also has a Grumman license at one point that's where Afterburner Climax comes in but was pulled down once the license expired which is an absolute shame because that game was awesome.

    I remember the "prancing horse" on the rear grille would face different ways depending on which way you were turning. I'm pretty sure Sega just mirrored the car sprite to save on memory when memory was at a premium.

    This change goes back to Yu Suzuki Game Works Vol 1 on the Dreamcast. The car model in that port looks to be the same as the one used in the Arcade 1up cab. That port of the Outrun is knocking on for being about 20 years old now.

      @@RetroRalph You’re welcome. I’d personally recommend getting the ISO as the original release on the DC is VERY expensive now as it came with a huge coffee table book as well as the game disc.
      Along with Outrun it came with the following arcade perfect super scaler games too, Power Drift, After Burner II, Hang-On & Space Harrier. So well worth tracking down.

    If I was a big fan of the game I would want my Ferrari! Not something that looks like a Ferrari! Fans of Outrun are going to be upset I think. Especially people into classic cars and video games! (only fix sadly would be to take out the Arcade1up Board and put a computer with the original Roms and get the buttons and wheels, pedals to work with it)

      Huge Out Run fan here, and a fan of European sports cars, especially Ferrari. I even have a full size in my garage. I could honestly care less about this. It's the gameplay that draws fans to this game. I'm not even thinking about the car when im playing.
      Indeed it is iconic, but not a deal breaker; at least for me. Everyone fan of the game would've known about the expired licensing going into this. It's been that way since 2010 when Sega had to start pulling games from all the major consoles eshops.

      The Ferrari logo is a horse, the classic Outrun logo is a Pegasus. On the steering wheel that is. The pixels on the screen may as well be from Custer's Revenge. Sega only had the Ferrari license for Outrun 2. I imagine when the contract ran out Sega is just playing it safe, I don't think they have that 90's cashflow for court battles with Ferrari.

  • @ForeverLacey09

    As a Sega arcade enthusiast and collector, I told everyone this would be the version of Outrun Arcade 1up would get when it was first leaked.
    Sega's license with Ferrari expired in December of 2011 which resulted in the removal of various digital Outrun releases from sources like PSN, Xbox Live and other sources. I couldn't see Sega renewing what I would believe to be a very expensive licensing agreement just to rerelease an old arcade classic.

    @Retro Ralph I’m pretty sure Sega acquired the rights to the Ferrari’s for the later Outrun games Outrun 2 and Outrun 2006 Coast2Coast. I don’t mind the new logo but it reminds me of the eagle on the Albanian flag 😂. Otherwise I feel they did a great job from what I have seen.

  • @MrBen2177
    @MrBen2177 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    They never got the license and the Ferrari logo was always different on the car and on the steering wheel. Sega just did it and probably thought to use a convertible testarossa to make it happen as there never was an officially released testarossa convertible. There was some protesting but eventually Sega got away with it. Funny fact that later on they got a full licensed game with all the iconic Ferrari’s in outrun 2.

    • @jeffjackson9679
      @jeffjackson9679 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kind of see your point, but at the same time companies get pissed seeing another company making money off a product with their likeness without getting paid a dime for it. Think about the old school WWF video games. WWF probably DID gain some ratings from those games being out in arcades, but i can guarantee you Vince McMahon would not just let video game companies make those games, make huge money off them, and not get a dime back in licensing fees and just be happy getting free exposure. Kind of a more extreme example, but I think you can see my point.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is also using the appeal of their product, in this case Ferrari's cars to enhance the appeal of your product.
      Some companies also don't like it if their product might be shown in a negative light. I recall one car company wouldn't allow their cars in a certain racing game because that game had 'realistic' damage models. A competing series had licensed the brand because they didn't included damage.

    They also changed the other cars in the traffic (identifiable Corvettes, BMWs, Porsche 911s, and Volkswagen Beetles) to generic cars and changed the Ferrari F40 in Turbo OutRun to a generic red sports car. I'm not 100% sure but I think the sprites in OutRunners are unchanged because while the cars are inspired by real cars, Sega made enough cosmetic changes to the cars for the original arcade game so as to not face any more legal problems.

    See this is why when making a game and using likeness or copyright, Music, and other licensed IP should be made in agreement for the game and all iterations off the bat so there are no issues when making classic forms of copied games, there are also dead games because of music licenses particularly rhythm games and such which is kind of a bad business, Tony Hawk suffered from not getting remakes until recently mainly because of the music copyright challenges.

    I'm not really Interested in getting this cab (I can't in the UK anyway), but seriously one of the coolest things about this game for me playing this in the arcades as a kid was cruising with the girl in a Ferrari. If you're REALLY OCD, the non-Ferrari car is actually a mild visual improvement cuz in the original, the Ferrari logo flips from facing left to right depending on which way the car is turning. Probably because rather than redrawing both sides of the turning car, they just flipped the sprite without making the logo adjustment. Also, the on the side art, the left rear-view mirror's hole isn't properly "cut out". This error was on the arcade cab art too. So there's something else you can unhealthily obsess about.
