The city surrendered without resistance and there was no need to burn it. Throughout the march to the sea, cities that were hospitable were spared (of course that was rare). Additionally, Savannah has always been a social city and it afforded Sherman a great opportunity to wine and dine. Savannah was in full support of the Confederacy before, during, and after the war. Slavery was not abolished in Savannah until after the war. Savannah being a port city was very active in the slave trade until then.
