Handel’s music is for the ages. Magnificent voice, and a fine performance on the valveless trumpet.
I've spent months listening to other versions of this: somehow this one eluded me. The purity of tone of the soprano, the incredible "technical brilliance" of the valveless accompanist: the ensemble working together seamlessly - this is the best. Wow!!!
I listen to this incredible music with the memory of young Sophy Scholl in my thoughts, who at 21 was arrested by the Gestapo in February 1943 at Munich University, that later resulted in her brutal execution by guillotine by the Nazis for her peaceful action resisting Hitler’s regime. It was reported that in the last moments of her life she looked up to the skies and said “It is such a splendid sunny day, and I have to go.” This was her realisation that she was never more to ‘feel the heat of the Sun’. Although her life was cut so tragically short, her immense courage and determined self-belief in what was right for the people of Germany, lived on just as the Eternal source of light Devine. Sophie Magdalena Scholl was born on 9th May 1922 and died a hero. A version of the text of the White Rose that led to Sophie’s arrest was later smuggled out of Germany, copied by the RAF and redistributed from the air by British planes flying over German cities as Allied propaganda that contributed to the inevitable defeat and fall of Nazi Germany. Incidentally Sophie loved the music of Bach and Handel and undoubtedly would have appreciated his wonderful melody. May Sophie’s memory continue on ‘with distinguished glory shine. To add lustre to this day’.
These unexpected gems from Handel are sheer ambrosia for the soul! You hear about water music and Messiah but these little forgotten delights are God's gifts!
I agree. This is the first time I have heard this and I am blown away by the whole performance….but, her voice! It is the voice of an Angel.
Hardly forgotten, just less well known and a symptom of the ‘greatest hits’ syndrome that seems to plague classical music in general.
@@michaelmitas7440 Yes, an absolutely beautiful performance. But actually Handel wrote this piece to be sung by a non castrato male, Richard Elford, whose voice was in the alto range and who was a lead singer in the Chapel Royal at the time. It's interesting that we often see the famous "Lascia ch'io Pianga" sung by well known male singers like Phillipe Jarousky on youtube when it was actually originally written for a female singer at the time. Of course, Castrato voices from history, high pitched male falsetto type singing and female singers all worked within the same general range and could exchange operatic parts or songs as needed.

He's in a league of his own imo, because nobody writes a more majestic cadence than Handel.

The magnificent voice and the virtuoso trumpet were indeed the most outstanding elements of this concerto, but let us not forget how utterly incomplete their performance would sound if not for the excellent playing in the background. All these talents playing together have created something Handel would proud of, I am sure.

I like very much Händels decision to iuxtaposition the trombone alongside the voice of the chanting angel and maybe was his thought to provide an holistic summary of the creation itself, the trombone going for the celestial solemnity and the voice for the earthen angelousness.... ...anyway I do not like my confusion about the tuning ( I got < h > but isn't it supposed to be c?... ) and this is one heaven of an aria I could listen to all day long...

Ottima registrazione. Se la suonano così dal vivo pago al trombettista un caffé e alla cantante anche qualcosa in più (o viceversa). E' un brano di bellezza incredibile. Farei notare la stupenda architettura tardo barocca della sala. Bel video anche se un po' freddo per la costruzione. Tutto da godere.
