I was really on edge whether or not to "upgrade" from my 5950X to a 5700/5800X3D due to that cache helping in games much more however going from a 32T to 16T was really putting my mind off it. People were saying that the X3D gets you 50-70% more performance in games compared to the 5950X however I see that is not the case.
I'll gladly take slightly lower fps in games (my gpu ain't pushing my CPU hard anyway since it's a 6650XT) for much much better productivity and multitasking (frequently ending up using 60-80% of my 5950X due to multiboxing in my main MMO along with other apps always kept open).
I guess the 5950X is still a pretty capable productivity monster along with decent gaming performance :D

      Definitely its enough for 6650xt.

Not to mention if you game at 4k Ultra where I do. I'm at 99-100% GPU usage in all the games I play. Switching out my 5950x for a 5800x3d would be a downgrade.
All these benchmarks assume you game at 1080p with nothing else running in the background.

@@Silarous I changed my 5950x out with a 5800X3D. After about 3 months I can say I see 0 difference. I do photo editing and 95% gaming at 4k with a RTX4080. Where I favor the 5800X3D over the 5950x is power usage. The 5800X3D uses about 55% less at idle and gaming.
      Max draw (benchmark):
      5800X3D - about 100w
      5950x about 215w
      Gaming:
      5800X3D about 65w
      5950x about 145w (sometimes lower)
      Idle
      5800X3D about 38w
      5950x about 85w
Real world usage (gaming/ browsing internet) I can say the 5950x is just wasting power/money. If you don't constantly edit/render using those cores then the 5800X3D is king. If you extract heavy compressed files then you will feel it with less cores. AM4 in total is by no means power efficient when idle. Heck my 12600k in my multimedia PC idles at 7w!
Both 5800X3D and 5950x run stable with 3800Mhz CL18 (secondary timings tuned) It took me 2 weeks to get the 5950x stable with PBO tuning.
My 5950x always ran hot and boost was maintained on some cores for couple seconds. The 5800X3D boost all cores 4450Mhz much longer. The 5800X3D also runs much cooler provided after PBO tuning. Using a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax.
      Lastly I am running 2x 4k monitors. 1x 4k @ 120hz and 1x4k @60hz.
Maybe the better 1% lows may let games feel less stuttery...dunno lol.

@gman9552 Technically, in terms of work performed per watt consumed, the 5950x is much more efficient than the 5800x3d. It may consume more energy overall, but it is the more power efficient processor.
You can run the 5950x at a lower TDP if power usage is a concern. You could actually match the same power consumption as the 5800x3d. It would no longer boost as high, but when it comes to multi-threaded work loads, the 16 cores of the 5950x running at say 4ghz would still dominate the performance of the 8 core 5800x3d at 4.5ghz.
When it comes to gaming at 4k, it would be an interesting test to see if the 5950x would become a bottleneck in this low power state or if it would still be plenty sufficient. I may actually try that test just for fun!
The reality of the matter is that not everyone needs 16 cores in their PC. It's completely overkill for many users. At the same time, if the person is strictly playing at 4k with high fidelity graphics, the 5800x3d is overkill as well. The 5800x would serve this person just as well in their game performance, a bit more performance outside of games, and at a much cheaper price.
It's that subset of people who are competitive high frame rate gamers who don't care about graphics or resolution and are specifically after the highest FPS possible where the X3d really takes the cake.

@@Silarous My comment has specifically to do with my experience of having both these chips in my setup and using them on a daily basis.
My usage will be a lot of browsing and normally youtube is always playing something on my 2nd monitor. I will edit in Lightroom and have photoshop open at the same time consuming anything 40-50gb ram total system. With editing I don't see any difference between these chips. I use my GPU for exporting. Gaming also 0 difference, maybe once again better 1% low on the 5800X3D but I think its harder to see when gaming at 4k res.
I have spent a great deal of time tweaking and weighing up options. That is why I compared the 2 chips at maximum tweaked performance. I don't see any reason as to nerf a CPU...then don't buy it right? I have this problem or apparently its a common issue. I have to disable C-state in bios otherwise the PC will hang when idling or doing light browsing. I had this issue with both chips. C-state enabled did yield lower power usage at idle but really not that much. I purchased the 5950x before X3D was a thing.
The 5950x all core will only be more efficient when capped/default stock that will limit the CPU at 120w usage. Idle once again is still not great especially if you have background processes running toggling cores. I monitor temps and clocks real time via Aida 64 on my clunky old Logitech G19 LCD that I have customized showing all temps, clocks and usage. I can herewith confirm that with my mediocre usage the 5800X3D definitely uses less power overall. Its nice to see CPU temps lower than GPU temps for a change lol.
The X3D chips you buy specifically for gaming. It will do just fine for some odds and ends that is not gaming related. Video editing will most likely be a game changer for more cores but I don't have 1st hand experience with that.

from what i see the 1%lows where the over all improvement out side of GTA V. i'm curious how it would help with 4k over my 5950X. i'm using 5950 64GB 3600Mhz and 7900xtx

x3d price is skyrocketing right now, i think i'll buy 5950 and you can oc it, would be cool to see test of 5950 oc with stock cooler wonder what it can handle, got 3400g 4 core @ 4,2* ( bought 3 years ago to run warzone on min spec on vega8 apu only, 5950 was king back then, beating intel to 250fps in wz1 witch was insane) *paired with msi 3060 12gb still pretty much runs everything, but I want that extra fps, 5950 16 cores should run better at dcs i think. Witcher vs gta shows that they are pretty much equal, lot depends on a game.. that few fps in some games should be regain easily by oc, what do you think..

If you use your PC mostly for gaming, then get the 5800X3D. If you use it mostly for productivity, then get the 5950X. The 3D V-Cache from the X3D CPUs is great for gaming, but outside of that it's useless. For CPU intensive applications outside of gaming you're better off with the 5950X because it has 16 cores and 32 threads, double what the 5800X3D has.

@@danielgonzalezjimenez5677 Hey thanks for your reply i have been doing some more research too and found that the 5700x3xd is pretty good also and not too much difference between the 5800x3xd so i might just get that instead its like £100 cheaper and i might use that extra money to buy a new power supply becasue im currently on 650w and if i buy a new processor i might need a bigger one i think. Thanks for your reply

@@kanoball3391 get 5800x3d if you want to hit 240fps on every esport games. otherwise 5950x, as it ll outlive the 5800x3d since it got more cores, that ll allow u to simply swap your gpu, and never have to upgrade your platform for a decade.
