I just returned from st Petersburg and Moscow. Both are amazing cities. I went so that I could see for myself what at least some of what Russia is really like. As an American I am pleased to let you know that the Russian people are great. Both our countries would benefit greatly from better communication and less propaganda. I plan to go back, soon. For the second half of the last century Life and Time Magazines were informing me that USSR-Russia is a dump. What I am seeing now is just the opposite of a dump. MSM has a long history of twisting the truth. In my business and as a tourist I've seen most of the world's great cities. Must say that I was impressed, especially for the layout and great open spaces, the most by St. Peterburg and its great cathedrals, palaces and monuments. I took The Volga River Cruise from Volgograd to Moscow with tourists from Great Britain, Canada and the USA. In Volgograd, we have seen the Mother Russia Monument. When the tour guide explained the horrors of the WW2 there was not a single dry eye around. Of course, Moscow and the Kremlin are great. But for me, the jewel was the 'GUM' Department Store that stands on Red Square opposite the Kremlin. Incredible architecture, layouts, decorations, displays and colours. Never seen anything like it. (Not even in the great Palermo shopping centre in Buenos Aires). All the credit to all that put this beauty together. With Love from a Pacifist Canadian.
I was in Saint Petersburg for a month back in June. I loved the place, so much to see! Luckily, I had enough time to see all of the exhibitions in the Hermitage and most of the church's. Maybe you missed it, a lot of people do, but there is a part of the Hermitage in the yellow building where they have some of Van Gogh's, Picasso's, Degas' and other impressionists' paintings, as well as other cool exhibitions, like late Russian Empire and Faberge.

In the Church of the savior on spilled blood every 'painting' is actually not paint, every single picture is made up of about 1x1in tiles, the whole church is made up of all tiles!!!
Yep. Candle soot can be cleaned from tiles, but will cause accumulated damage to paint. [for those readers who didn't yet know why mosaics are so common in pre-electricity Churches] ;)

It's too bad that communism and all this anti Russian propaganda makes people avoid traveling to Russia. I live in the States, and literally majority of people would travel to such random ass locations, like Thailand, Korea, china, Iceland, you name it! anywhere but Russia! Eastern Europe is like "taboo", only the more educated, open minded people travel there, and realize how much beauty and history is there!
I've been there three times and I'm here to tell ya it is WONDERFUL!! Take a Volga river cruise vacation between Moscow and St. Pete, it'll be a highlight of your life.

That being said, I also think the gardens of Peterhof are indeed way better than in Versailles (but smaller), neat and organized. The building isn't as great though. It's the opposite in Catherine summer palace, in which it's the building it's that is gorgeous.

I thought the mosaic tile murals in the church were gorgeous as well! I spent one day in St. Petersburg this summer as part of a cruise. It was nice to see some of the things I didn't get to do. You got some beautiful shots!

Amazing video! You need to Visit some other cities in Russia like Kazan or Sochi to see how diverse this country really is! There are Muslim regions, Buddhist regions, ex-German cities like Kaliningrad (Konigsberg) or Vyborg which was a part of Finland
Actually Finland itself is former Russia, while Vyborg was founded by Sweden. Sweden founded that castle in 13 century during so-called Sweden Third Crusade, Russians failed to capture castle and as result lost control over nearest lands for next 400 years.
Thanks for a great vid. I do not know if you ever go back, but metro in SP is worth seeing too. It is as great as in Moscow. I would also put summer czar residences on the list (Petergof, Pushkin, Gatchina, Pavlovsk). A trip by hydrofoil to Petergof is a great summer day trip. The hydrofoils depart in front of the Winter Palace. And a "cherry on the cake" - a concert, opera, or a ballet performance at one of the Mariinsky's stages.

Majority of russians are christians, muslims are a minority. There are more than 200 churches in St.Petersburg and only one cathedral mosque.

Hey Nadine, Great Video, I was blessed back in 1989 to travel to at the time The soviet union and at that time St Petersburg was called Leningrad. I was able to visit some of the same place. Thanks for the video. Nicely done.

Actually Finland itself is former Russia, while Vyborg was founded by Sweden. Sweden founded that castle in 13 century during so-called Sweden Third Crusade, Russians failed to capture castle and as result lost control over nearest lands for next 400 years.
There is a version that the city was founded by novogorodian Gostomysl. The name of the city Gostomysl gave in honor of his son "Vybor"

Thanks for a great vid. I do not know if you ever go back, but metro in SP is worth seeing too. It is as great as in Moscow. I would also put summer czar residences on the list (Petergof, Pushkin, Gatchina, Pavlovsk). A trip by hydrofoil to Petergof is a great summer day trip. The hydrofoils depart in front of the Winter Palace. And a "cherry on the cake" - a concert, opera, or a ballet performance at one of the Mariinsky's stages.
