    This was so helpful for me. I had put more than enough screws into the areas completely making them squeak free except for 1 spot at the door entry along the wall. I was about to give up and start floor installation when I took one last look and found this. For a DIY person oblivious to these things your video was exactly what I needed and I just bought an oscillating saw (multi tool) so this was my first time using it. I put the screw down on a 45 degree angle through the 2by4 to the floor and now I'm squeak free. Thank you!

    This method worked great for me. My carpet and baseboards were removed for remodeling so I knew where the floor joists were and using a stud finder I confirmed that the studs were directly above the floor joists. I made sure to install 3-1/2" screws angled into the floor joists. Thank you, I appreciate your video.

    great solution! Another technique that my home builder is doing... is because we have access to the floor from the basement, he'll be putting GRK's through the ceiling to get to the wall.

    good video. i had massive squeaks with a 1/4" gap between bottom plate and subfloor. after watching this the gap was too big to screw down so i used shims and hammered them in between until the squeak was gone.

    Thanks for the video, it gave me an idea to fix my place. I’m not renovating so I didn’t want to remove the baseboard and carpet. I used a metal shim, or a 3 inches #6 screw if you will:). I simply drove it where the noise was coming from, between the baseboard and the carpet. It started at a 45 angle but then it made itself almost flat with the carpet as soon as I started screwing it in. The space beneath the baseboard is large enough to hide the screw head, and the carpet covers it to. A fainter squeak was coming from a few inches to the side so I drove another one there and now I got 0 squeaks. It might not be the best solution or the fix to everyone, but it sure was quick and effortless.

      That's awesome! Glad you were able to fix the squeak and it's good that you didn't need to tear anything out to do it

      do you have a video you can refer to for this fix? i also don't want to take out carpet and baseboards.. just can't visualize what you're describing

    • @cbaldan
      @cbaldan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daryls.8089 sorry, I didn't make a video, but here is a more detailed explanation:
      Get a long metal screw. Kneel at the point where you want to insert the "shim"; use your fingers to lay down the carpet fibers to see the bottom of the baseboard. Insert the screw in this clearence you made, at a 45 angle, and push it forward until the tip of the screw meets the wall sill board and the floor.
      Holding the screw in that position, slowly start screwing it in. As the screw gets in and underneath the sill, it will get firm and start to lay down in the carpet. Screw it in as far as you can.
      You might need few shim srews in, a few inches apart.
      Worked like a charm for me.

    I used dozens of "Squeeek no more screws" on the baseboard and floor after reading about others' successful usage of the product. Squeaks didn't even slightly lessen, though. After watching your video, I had decided to take your advice. However, I then came upon a comment regarding a 45-degree angle screw between the baseboard and the carpet. After just one screw, it was an enormous success. I am grateful for the chance to address this ten-year issue.

    I had the same issue, but I went nuclear on mine and pulled the floorboards before putting in my flooring, that way I was able to drive screws up from underneath. I never considered pulling the baseboard off, as they were perfectly installed and I didn't want to break them in the process.

      Hi there. I have the lower parts of walls that creak and crunch whenever the floor near them is walked on and am going mad! How exactly could I fix this without opening up the skirting boards and cutting holes? (ie. I didn’t fully understand your suggestion, tubemember21)

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe they were saying to use a long magnetic driver bit holder and drive the screw from an angle above the baseboard down into the sill plate. You may need to drill a small hole into the drywall first to fit the bit holder through. Something like this:

    Holy shit. This is the exact itrritating squeaky noise I have on my cape upper floor. If I have carpet, that makes this a little tougher right? im not the best handyman but this is something im willing to try, the noises are killing me LOL!
    Ive been googling this for so long.

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  ปีที่แล้ว

      Carpet is often held down by tack strips so I would think you could pull it back out of the way pretty easily and press it back into place when done

  • @digitalassetdude
    @digitalassetdude 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you ducts or vents under the floor are cause of the squeak? It only happens in winter as well which is so weird it goes away in the spring summer and fall then comes back every winter...

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have baseboard vents I suppose it's possible that they're having some effect. Though to me it sounds more like the wood in the floor/walls is shrinking in the winter as the heated air in houses is dry air and being allowed to move around a nail(s) and squeak. When it becomes more humid in the spring the wood expands and doesn't have any room to move anymore

    Do you have to replace dry wall?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The holes will be covered by the baseboards so no need

  • @chelseapw
    @chelseapw ปีที่แล้ว

    OMG! Thank you! I live in a new build house and I have ripped up the flooring and screwed down every floor board and the sound is still coming from the walls. How did you patch it back up?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I cut my holes lower than the height of my baseboards so theyd be covered once those were installed. That's certainly the easiest way to go if you have tall enough baseboards, otherwise you've got some drywall patching to do first. Sucks that you're having to deal with that in a new build

  • @rdjess
    @rdjess 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if the wall goes parallel to the joists? Do you just screw it into the subfloor anyway?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not screwing into the joists below in the video, just into the subfloor. The idea is to stiffen the wall/floor up so they move together and not separate from each other

    • @brianchristopher9955

      I have this problem upstairs in my house as well and it has driven me mad. I was going to shim route as the gap between the wall plate and subfloor seems to be significant almost like the wall is floating. My question to you is that if I secure the wall plate to the subfloor and joists there is a chance that the drywall will separate from the top of the wall when load is placed on the floor right?

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it's possible if the joists are firmly attached to the wall plate but I haven't experienced that happening

  • @rafaelvasquez2246
    @rafaelvasquez2246 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ProjectBilld
      @ProjectBilld  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you referring to the corner at the door frame I showed near the end of the video? I just toe screwed between the 2 studs there. You can also screw through the sides of the 2x4s through the wall plate. Just have to make sure the screws are long enough to reach the subfloor

    • @ProjectBilld

      Yep that's a possibility and certainly worth trying if you know there's no water/electrical lines in the wall
