    I realized as I was editing that I misspoke when I read out the name of the engine. The correct name is the Volvo D13, which is what's written, while I said "D3." I apologize for this error.

      I think the 8 forward and 4 reverse was wrong. I’ve driven that engine transmission combo before and it was 12 forward gears. Seems weird for a bus to have 4 reverse gears.

    Definitely a viable alternative to the train. I was surprised by how luxurious it was, although the only issues with buses is that they are prone to traffic, but I wouldn't mind being stuck in traffic in a seat that comfortable!

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Traffic is definitely the only major downside to The Jet. As I mentioned, they bake delays into the schedule, but if there's some particularly bad traffic on one day, then there's only so much they can do.

      I guess "viable alternative" is in the eyes of the rider, but this doesn't seem to offer anything better than a train ride. The video mentions Acela fare at $350 but I have never paid anywhere near that much. Regular Northeast Regional trains are an hour shorter than this bus, rarely encounter delays, and provide better amenities in my opinion. The ability to get up and walk around, a cafe car, a quiet car, etc. For short trips like NYC-DC, I don't think Amtrak can be beat. Also Amtrak has started offering discounted fares for trains after 7pm, DC to NYC for like $20. When it comes down to it, this is still a bus.

    It seems The Jet is straddling the line between Business Class and Economy, which is probably a very successful strategy. I guess the ticket increase for real-ish meals would make the price less attractive?
    Regardless, I admire how The Jet takes advantage of the strengths of ground transport, on a heavily travelled route. It looks very relaxing and stress free.

    Hi! Real quick add on point to the criticism of a lack of lounge access you made at about 13:50, all US domestic airlines that operate between NY and DC do not include complementary lounge access with a domestic first class ticket. The only US airline that does is Alaska. If you want to use AA’s, United’s, or Delta’s lounges, you have to either pay or have elite status to enter. So in terms of competition, I would only compare the Jet Bus and any potential lounge in the future to Amtrak, assuming both would be complementary (as Amtrak currently is with a first class ticket). If you’re paying for first class, you should have complementary access to all reasonable amenities, and that is one major sticking point I have with US domestic first class. The trips are 5 hours or less, and the airlines don’t treat you well if you are a premium customer anyways, so why even pay for first class domestic flights.
    Great video though! Hope to see the Jet Bus include some better food alternatives like fresh pastries, which I think would really seal the deal as the best and comfiest travel between DC and NY, especially given the price being half of Acela.

I would rather take go bus and pay 30 bucks a person one way so it’s h fee 100 bucks for a slightly less comfortable ride while saving money. What they don’t tell you is that metro center isn’t where it’s at for dc. That’s off of red line. You would need to take the red li e to lenfant plaza and get onto orange line for anything tourist for dc. Orange line includes all the Smithsonian’s, the Capitol, White House and gw university.
    The jet also does not allow pets of any kind. So if you want to take a bus you are left with only Peter Pan.

    As great as that bus is, it still is slower than the train. Just looking at Amtrak's published times, even the slower Northeast Regionals are about 3 and a half hours, while the bus is over 4 hours (based on your description) and could still be prone to more traffic delays than expected. Acela, while very expensive, has published times of just under 3 hours. Amtrak is known for their own delays, but NEC trains generally do have better on-time performance.
    I think the Jet could be more convenient if it offered different locations in NYC. Hudson Yards really isn't central in NYC and still close to Penn Station, so getting there could take the same amount of time as getting to Penn Station (if not more). If they had pick-up or drop-off in Lower Manhattan, near Grand Central, somewhere along 5th Avenue, etc., then it could beat out the train in both price and time once you factor in door-to-door times. Metro Center in DC is a good location, but Union Station is only 2 stops away on the Red Line, so the time savings there isn't as great.

    • @LonestarTrips
      @LonestarTrips  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree that time is the major deciding factor for The Jet. As great as the experience was, allotting four hours to travel is often not an option for most people. Plus with only a few round trips with 14 seats per trip, it's hardly as accessible as Amtrak, especially for those last minute journeys. As for more pickup/drop-off locations, they're currently looking to expand service. Now whether that means more stops around DC/NYC or stops at other cities, I have no idea, but at least they're looking into it. I think the Jet will be a more viable alternative if they operated between Boston and NYC, as the northeast corridor isn't much faster than driving because of the slow curves through Connecticut, so hopefully that's on their radar for future routes.

    The only way you could pay $350 would be for a first class ticket on the Acela train.

    Shame there aren't more routes available. I'd travel more often if such quality was available. As I grow older I like driving less and less. Planes are awful with seating too small and the hassle of TSA. Trains are somewhat better but not as convenient as being picked up on a city street.
