  • I have made a test to extend the integrated antenna of a WeMos ESP8266 board by soldering an extra wire to it.
Used solid copper wire from a standard CAT5 cable.
    Test code: pastebin.com/f6Pr4b53

    Hi Balàzs
Again I was searching for a tutorial to solder additional antenna to Bluetooth pcb and yours was the best!

You need to calculate the length of the antenna for the 2.4ghz band.. You'd like to get far better results by cutting the trace of the stack antenna and soldering the new antenna in it's place.. This will remove the losses from the zig-zag, as a straight antenna will function far better.

Yes for 2.4ghz its EXACTLY 30mm this is critical

The length of the antenna on a typical 2.4GHz receiver is 28.8 to 32 mm long, most are about 28.8 mm. The length of this is somewhat critical and can greatly vary the distance that the signal can be reliably received. Too long can be just as bad as too short, unless you can accurately make sure it is some odd multiple of an electrical quarter wavelength; i.e. 3/4, 5/4, 7/4 etc. Note that electrical wavelength can be different than a simple measurement as it depends on the velocity factor of any coax or other line involved. See also en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavelength

What I've learned is 1. antenna design is a very complex task, 2. even with a very careful antenna design the actual outcome can be bad, 3. tiny stock antennas can be improved by adding an extra wire, but can either be worse or even destructive.

Yep, right. This is why I have spent some time looking at people's different implementations of small 2.4GHz antennas and along with range tests (for RC control, Bluetooth and 2.4GHz WiFi - different WiFi frequencies are another story), it turned out that this 28.8-32mm size is the optimal. You can easily check distance with different size antennas, it can easily be confirmed. I had to optimize my antennas when building drones, to get the most out of the possible range.

      I really
a)wished you took length measurements with your results.
      b) does the pcb antenna still get addedmto the length in some way?

I just did the test with the same board cutting every 3mm or so. Original: -64 I found two maximum points at 106mm(-45) and 45mm (-49) antenna length. +-3mm don't change much. In an outside test the gain was not so much but it will help me, as I have an application where the original is at -89 (just in range) or less. I also tried it with a NodeMCU32 with the same antenna(-73) and found 101mm(-46) and 47mm(-50).

Try building an outdoor antenna with a 50 ohm impedance antenna cable with a 5 km to 30 km long range satellite dish.

    Never disconnected the internal antenna.
The antenna you should use is 1/4 wave, which is about 3.1cm.

Interesting. As you used a single wire, I take it you cut the trace of the original antennae and soldered your new one on, with no ground?

    • @sharedinventions
      @sharedinventions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Take this video as a naive experiment. What I do in the video has no radio-knowledge behind it. I have seen people cutting the original trace of the antenna and solder on some wires instead, but not touched the ground trace. You may want to try that.

I'm sorry but I cannot tell you an exact size. What I can tell you is to measure the signal quality before and after you apply a certain length of wire. If you are not satisfied with the result you can try shortening the wire, but also keep in mind that you can destroy your module.

Also should say my wireless guitar system I got for under $25 has gotten a great benefit to soldering that length onto just the receiver, also did it to the transmitter for good measure. Much much better.
Oh and I soldered it to the end of the pub antenna.

you are using 2 antennas at the moment becouse of the cap on the board is stil closed you need to remmove the cap and sloder the antenna to the pole near the ic for beter resalts then it neats to be about 6,25 cm for a good result i have about -43 dbm on the second flore about 8 meters from my router

It's half wave. You should use 1/4 wave to get the impedance correct. With half wave it should never work well.
