Ours didn't sound like that. But then again, we bought ours on Cyprus for use there, took it to Turkey with us by ship. Drove it there while stationed there. Took it to Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan and back. Then had it shipped to NY. Drove it from NY to Norfolk, VA. Then after the Cuban Missile Crisis, on down to Florida. RH drive version. Miss the old car. Need to find a chassis for a 1962 Junior as I had the drivetrain for one of them.
Back in 1964 I had one in San Francisco. Mine had a Saxomat automatic clutch, which I thought was totally useless. There was NOONE in town who knew how to service the car and the ignition system gave me trouble. Still I remember the car fondly, because of its beauty and uncommon performance. Fully loaded with lugagge, doing 85 to 90 mph all day long on trips to Las Vegas, never missed a beat. The quality was strictly world class. This car, with an electronic ignition, fuel injection and todays high quality oil would be a hands-down winner.
I know that two-strokes, with their excessive burning of oil, is bad for the environment, but I absolutely love the sound of one screaming down the road at high revs! And DKW developed some of the best two-stroke engines ever.
Awesome!!,my dad have one (1967 i am from Argentina, this country made this car too, check out the fissore model ),very comfortable and powerful,i remember when i have 10 years old when my dad teached me to drive with this car,he let me to star and acelerate the engine all the time, that model was four door and the front doors were suicide doors, the interior was very similar to our car.Keep it going :) (sorry for my bad english)
What a lovely little car. I have been looking for one to restore for many years. No luck. I am in Australia. Maybe there are non left here now. Thank you for sharing 😊 👍
@@88_Delta Haha that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Anyway, modt of the visible fumes should be carbon monoxide or just carbon I think (or evaporated unburnt oil) so will be more toxic than CO2 but probably won't accelerate climate change much more.
Only 3 automobiles around the world have their engines' hints , children used to guess 2 blocks before " dad is coming!" thanks to their noise nobody could mistake : this DKW 3-6 "1000s" ( as known in Argentina ) , plus Volkswagen Kafer / Kombi and the "washing machine lovely sound" of all Citroën 2cv , Ami & Mehari .
Mark-I remember riding in these 'corn-popper' DKWs when I was a kid in Germany in the 1960s. Nothing like 'em. Can you make another video of the pattern of what's on the roof and the door panels? It looks like interesting patterns. Merry Christmas! John
The 50 year old stinker 3=6 uses a mix of 1:50 2stroke oil to petrol. In Western Germany these smell rises at the end of 1989, when the DDR became a fallen State and the Trabbies go West. As a young man I have some of those Cars in 1970. They cost only 20 to 120€ , Radio and flowerholder integrated! In Winter with Spikes in the Front tyres.
very nice. I have a '57 3=6 and i need to get her running and fixed up. problem is that i don't have a garage for the car where i live and i don't have the budget for her at the moment either. So my brother has her at the moment for storage. Enjoy your DKW.
Are those amber headlights legal in Oregon? My Citroen has those (period authentic) but I wasn't sure if I needed to swap them before it got here. With any luck it'll be up here next Summer.
The amber headlights are from Brazil and probably not legal in Oregon but the the cops have better things to do. No one has said a peep going on ten years now two in different vehicles
My wife thought the Fed's will put me in the clink!, I printed out $ 5k worth of bills on clear water slide transfers, stuck them, then clear coated the works.
Hi there I have a 1000s but it doesn't have the original exhaust fitted , I can get a copy of the standard factory unit but it is expensive . It runs OK~ as it is , do you think a new exhaust system will improve sound and performance ?
I have head from multiple sources that only the original exhaust gives the best performance, here in the USA original exhaust is absurdly expensive and has to be shipped from Germany or S. America.
Where are your bumpers? Aside from that, nice restoration of an unusual car, and that comes from a European. I have only seen one DKW, a much much older model, in a museum. Just that screaming engine makes my skin crawl, sounds like it's about to explode :D Old 4-stroke 4- or 6-cyl sounds more pleasant to my ear, like your Nash Rambler :D
Is this the original exhaust? Can't remember that it has two pipes. I have a DKW 3=6 Saxomat (means automatic clutch) built 1959. I live in Germany, but it would be nice to drive with you a bit :)
+Tim Krehbiel yes there is a fella in Germany that races these DKW's in the German vintage / Historic classes. He uses a homemade dyno and can extract 100 hp out of this 900 cc engine. That is double or more stock. He will not reveal any secrets to me. He thinks I will profit from the information somehow. I just want to go faster.

What a lovely little car. I have been looking for one to restore for many years. No luck. I am in Australia. Maybe there are non left here now. Thank you for sharing 😊 👍

i remember mine 1961 dkw 1000s four doors ,fast car 2strokes 3 cylinders
That is a sweet sound. It makes a nice change from the ubiquitous rumble and burble of modern engines. Music indeed.

Starkes Video. DKW. The last western 2 stroke 3 cylinder Engine from Germany. And also in Eestern Germany .It's a IFA F9.
Cool to see the old German two-stroke in the USA :)
On the gdr Wartburgh 311
I don't think this is the original exhaust, is it? In my memory the original sounds much warmer and mor musically
sounds so good!
melodia para mis oídos 2T humeante!!!!
WHAT GREAT CRACKLE IT HAS !
SOME DAY SOON MY GOLIATH WILL SOUND LIKE 2/3ds OF THAT .
I can see the lentil soup running through the cylinders !
Very nice dkw and seldom as a coupe greeting Martin

yes they are very interesting patterns...I'll give you a hint, the pattern is a testament to my duration and cost of the restoration

I like this guy as Dad as much as odd car guy.

Such cars ran in the British Saloon Car Championship!
I think the DKW's were so cool. I wish I had bought a wagon.
Dkw auto union. Pequena maravilha.

2stroketurbo Awesome. If it becomes an issue, I can just chalk it up to being a weird foreign car I guess.
like fireworks!!
nice..whats the pattern on the roof?
The roof and interior are covered in Amercian currency = 20's 50's 100's bills
thats cool!
My wife thought the Fed's will put me in the clink!, I printed out $ 5k worth of bills on clear water slide transfers, stuck them, then clear coated the works.
no wonder you keep it locked away!
1963impala2dr yep . I was half expecting to walk out of the grocery store someday catching a thief trying to razor blade bills off the roof
do you want to take a tackmeter on it?

The two-stroke engine needs an exaust with reflector sheeds inside. The design of the Four-stroke ones meets not the performance of the original!
popcorn mashine :)
What a beautiful car! I love the back windows. How do you like driving with the amber headlights?
They sold these in the USA?

Bumpers are un dented, un twisted, and primed. Not yet painted though. ( going on 3 years now )
oh does this engine rev tight. holy moly
In Brazil it use to be called - Bolsolixo
🇧🇷 DKW BELCAR ,DKW SW ,DKW VEMAG ,DKW FISURE ,MADE IN BRAZIL AUTO UNION 🇧🇷👍😎

The original exhaust is impossible to find here in the US. I put on a Magnaflow muffler with dual tips
2stroketurbo I know someone you could buy an original rebuild from. The price is a bit high (450€).
Imagine lubrication of these with hemp oil. Lol
a little porting, head work and pipes - carb. could be pretty good

It's great exactly how it is. It couldn't sound any better.
