  • Every sound effect of mine in this tutorial/video : bit.ly/My-Sound-Effects
Sound design in our filmmaking process is extremely important, it's not something I've always paid a lot of attention to but the more I've progressed as a creator/filmmaker in this industry I've learnt the power of sound effects and how it can have such a strong impact on our visuals and the emotion of the audience.
In this tutorial of a basic travel style montage/film I touch on a few tips and topics on how to manipulate sound effects and where to use various elements such as risers, drones, ambience, underscores and transition type sound design to bring your visuals to life.
I created this Essential Flow SFX pack/bundle with my close friend and composer Daniel Deuschle after realising I owned so many different sound packs and only used 1 or 2 sounds from each. So we set out to create over 120+ essential sound elements for creators who want to add another layer of depth to their edits. This sound effect pack is something I've been incorporating into my edits and found is extremely useful for various types of edits. I really hope these essential sounds can be of use to others and after time we could continue to cater more variety for all your needs.
All the sick ass stock footage I used by the way was from ArtGrid - bit.ly/stockclips

One big takeaway I got from this was that audio is a big part of making video transitions feel smoother. Even if it's just a jumpcut, the sound effects made it feel like an extremely smooth transition

Absolutely! I’m a beginner and have been so focused on trying to get some natural transitions. But now, thanks to the video, I feel a bit more relieved that I can use sound effects with jumpcuts.

    Risers
    Drones and Atmospheres
    Slow Motion
    Time-Lapse
    Transitions (Wooshes, Hits, etc)
    Ambience (Wind, Forest, Coastal Environments)

This is soooo freakin awesome! Thank you thank you. Please post more tutorials - editing workflow, shooting for transitions (I notice how most of your transitions seemed to have been shot planning ahead), how your shoot on location (maybe try having a GoPro on your head or chest running while you film - kind of like what Brandon Li does). You are my favorite filmmaker so any tutorial from you is GOLD! Thank you

    • @MegaHellx
      @MegaHellx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@cammychose6788 yep sound plays equal importance as what visuals are. tbh at one point your visual mistakes are easy to miss out but if the sound quality or designing isn't done proper, doesn't matter how good visuals are, the entire clip sucks. there are many movies which gone flop just because they weren't sounding good.

    • @markulano6355

It's not actually sound design, it's identifying sound effects. This is a common current problem in film: misusing a word so it becomes a trendy affectation which ultimately creates more confusion because our vocabulary has been hijacked.Sound design is a full on collaboration between the 3 disciplines involved. First, Production Sound Mixing, then Supervising Sound Editing and finally Rerecording mixing. there are additional creative contributors within these 3 team sets but the SD term is not correctly used as a synonym for film sound editing. The term came into usage through the pioneering work of Walter Murch and Ben Burtt when, they pioneered the rethinking of approach to be a holistic one replacing the compartmentalized approach evolved in Hollywood. There is a reason that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences does NOT award an Oscar for sound design, but rather applies peer recognition for excellence to the 3 essential disciplines that work in collaboration. Every shot is hand made (my motto).

Loving this new type of video! Appreciate your work and it's great to have insight into your creative process. I've been following you for a little while now and love your style. Some ideas for some other "tutorial" type videos that I personally would also find interesting from you: How you plan out a scene and choose your lenses when you travel, your in camera transition techniques, or an in depth review/breakdown of the edits/filming behind one of your videos (i.e. Bangladesh)

OMG - I am loving this! I'm an editor for a company that does small reality type shows. I remember distinctly talking to some new crew members - to NOT use music throughout a piece - and to use sound. They all turned around and looked at me with what I could best described as mystification. They were actually very uncomfortable not using music back to back. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE sound design. Just the best. And this vid you've put together makes me sooooo happy! Thanks!

Bro, Im working on a short film.. typed in sound design tips scrolled through like a 100 wack videos, only to stumble on yours, a fellow South African, who's video gave me just what I needed to complete my last scene. Its an experimental short, I'd almost call it a live action/motion graphic hybrid. Using After effects for the edit and Logic Pro for the sound design.
Went through your page, I'm now certain you are South African.
    Incredible work bro.
