  • Today I'm finally installing some new LED lighting panels in my workshop! This is a job I've been wanting to get done for a long time since it will help to have more consistent lighting when making videos. I'm using LED lighting panels from Amazon, links below. Remember, do not touch electrics if you don't know what you're doing.

    I have just fitted one in my 10 X 8 pent shed, brilliant, not much of a shadow as, contrary to many opinions, my head is less that 600mm wide! So pleased they worked for you as well.

    Just had 2 delivered to upgrade the light in my 82 year old dads garage, his eyesight is not as good as it used to be, these will let him carry on using his lathe for a few more years. The output is amazing. Thanks for the video would never have done this without watching this.

    I’ve brought 2 of these for my summer house, I fitted them into some plywood I cut a hole into then screwed it into the ceiling, I’ve got 2 of the 1200 x 600 ones which is basically the same as 2 of the square ones together like you’ve done, also going to buy 6 of the 600 x 600 for my loft aswell as I have just 1 dull halogen bulb in there, but yeah I am such a fan of these lights and I highly recommend them to other people too. Thanks for the video. 😁

    Adding the second set of panels really made a big difference. As your wood rake was quite dark till you added the second lot of panels. Need to do a similar thing in my workshop. Will require more work as I hace an open roof space which is great for storage but not so good for lighting up my workshop.

Seeing the quantity and quality of light you have got from those panels I think they would have been ott for my shed.

    That video 'brightened' my day a bit Andy.. A while ago, (before the LED boom) , I was putting up a 5 foot florescent in the kitchen that was ordered by the management...sorry, missus.. I just threw the off switch on the wall and read the live/neutral with my meter to make sure there was no AC live present.. I got the fitting secured to the ceiling and was about to connect the wires to the new light when the better half came into make a brew. Bless her.. Out of habit she threw the wall switch on, and caused me to enter the 240 volt dance of death , which in turn caused me to grab the fitting while falling from the ladder and plummeting to ground, with the fitting, cable, part of the ceiling and the step ladder. As I still had hold of the live cable, things ended quite well when the missus tried assisting me by grabbing my hand to help me up..I'll never forget the look on her face and her new hairdo standing on end like a collection of stalagmites. As I was explaining the accident to the paramedic and his assistant, they nearly dropped me off the stretcher as they were laughing uncontrollably , which is not very professional really.

    • @GosforthHandyman

    I don't think it will be an issue in your workshop, however, you need to be really careful using LED lighting around rotating machinery such a lathes and mills. Because LED's are literally flashing to a frequency, on and off very quickly, you can encounter a situation where rotating machinery can be made to look as though it is actually standing still.

I have heard people talking about needing only 250lux in a workshop. I realise that you need lots of light for filming but would you say that the amount of light you have got would be too much for a normal workshop environment? Great vid Andy and what a difference they make! Quick wiring question, do these lights require an earth? I have a customer that asked me to fit a similar LED unit in her kitchen, issue being that no earth runs to what is currently a temporary light drop. Do regs allow for a (presumably double insulated unit) to be fitted in this situation? Struggling to get an answer from my suppliers! Any advice appreciated!

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No earth - 2 core to transformer. Presumably since they're low voltage (12V I think) they don't need earth and the transformer is double insulated. In a kitchen you'd probably have to have them in a proper frame to meet regs - not sure. Any sparks on here who could confirm? They get warm so I wouldn't fit them flat to ceiling. 👍

      @@GosforthHandyman I used PETG but they don't get that warm i think PLA would be fine, you just have to print them in the right orientation, they've been up for about 18 months so far :-) I've just ordered some 18W square ones to go above my lathe.

    Don't worry about the continuity Andy, I think you'll need make-up artist to tone the skin down so you don't look so shiny. HA! HA! HA!

    Have you installed concealed ceiling 600x600 commercial fittings, also is this a defined location as defined by Part P of the Building Regs as you will need to get it tested and an Electrical Installation Certificate issued ps I am a qualified electrician

      No, it's not a special location and it's non-notifiable work. 👍

    For all that faffing around with brackets why not just use the proper panel frames you can buy?

      Then they'd be in a fixed location - with these I can move them wherever I want. 👍
