  • "C" Hohner harmonica in the Key of G. Here is a near overview of some of the amazing and versatile capabilities of the Major Pentatonic scale in 2nd/cross position. We focus on the "sweet and pretty" notes this wonderful and fairly easy scale affords us in 2nd position over a few different types of music that use nice, pleasing major chords. This lesson, although long, is a MUST for learning to play outside the blues and more emotionally within the blues. Enjoy! (Backing Tracks and other info below)

Kirk here mystroe ... Your exactly right ... since I've been concentrating on one or two holes at a time I'm really getting good on the root note , the two draw ... And my rythm as improved two fold ... I love the blues but being from west Virginia it's all blue grass and country music up here in the mountain state .... That major pennatonic scale is the best for our music up here ... Rock on !!!

Just beginning harp and understanding why 4th tone of the song key tranposes to the harp key, for blues (dom. 7), it's cool to hear how you're getting the pretty pentatonic sound by transposing harp to the 5th of the song key. I imagine this is a deep rabbit hole. Top on my agenda will be learning how you do those gypsy minor scales on a diatonic major harp. Played that vid last night for gf and she went wild.

I've even started playing my only C harp again which i had ditched because it was a 10 buck big river harp an old girl friend bought me years ago when i started thinking about learning. I've since got my hands on loads of more expensive harps in other keys but as I've progressed I can even make the cheap one sound good. (well sort of)...

Hey big Kirk here from the mountain state ... Since I've been playing country music on the major pennatonic I decided to try blue grass on backing tracks ... I guess being from the mountains my rythm seems much more natura and easy l to this type of music ... I'm playing the major pennatonic with it but I'm also playing the four draw half steep bend in there too ... I can definitely here the blues in there along with country ... Chords seem to come easy with blue grass too ... When I hit that four draw half step and then go into the g chord I hear my man Dylan hitting that long lonsome train sound ... I love it but it's also very erie ... after awhile gotta stop playing it ... It definitely wears on me ... Very soulful but then you have to leave it for awhile ... Also hear a lot of gospel in there too ... Bill Monroe was a genius ... Bob wills too ....lol !!!!

This scale in UNIVERSAL and is known in every culture. It's a five (penta) note scale that can take you to heaven and sooth your soul. It is so beautiful!!! It's simplicity can create such complex emotions in both the player and the listener. I love it and use it all the time. It is great to see we have the same taste in backing tracks Moon Cat. Nice choices. Today I went through this a little before work as well. I found myself suddenly playing a song that I hadn't heard in decades with the country backing track. I found myself picking up riffs from a Clint Black song called, "State Of Mind" - from 1993! This tune has a decent little harp intro too. Thank you so much for this lesson! Anyone viewing this great lesson, please consider pitching in on Jason's Patreon. Sending peace and love Bruthaaaa!!!

I realised I was using loads of 2d, 3d, 4d and 6b but occasionally accidentally hit the 5b and it was fine. I did also use the 4b but it broke my flow and now I know why. And now I also know I was missing that beautiful 3d full step bend. Tada, we're now good to go back to it.

Hey J R koik again from wv... I saw Dylan up here in Charleston back in November and he did that great song he wrote what was it you wanted ... It's a great huanting song ... Lyrics are great and the music is second to none ... You can really play those huanting harmonica notes with it , with feeling ... Dylan is still spot on he plays that mean harmonica solo in key of D it's really good ... Love the way Willie and Mickey do it ... It's a song with great feeling .... Love Dylan ....

Jason! This is the best lesson I've seen out of you, hands down! I remember years ago ending up a little confused, but you've slowed it down tremendously and really seem to have a teacher's heart. I absolutely love it man. You're killing it. I'm just so proud of you and can really see that your commitment to these lessons, your patrons, your sobriety, and so forth are really paying off. Great work!

Once again J delivers and delivers big! This was great. I do that fault of playing blues scales all the time and minor pentatonic. You forget to contrast it out by combining it with major sounding stuff. It's great to get reminded of stuff like this.

Thank you Jason! This is what's been missing in my jigsaw puzzle. It's a structure. Not knowing these scales is why I've thrown so many others off while jamming with them. After watching, I AM hearing the structure of different songs(Little Walter Shuffle.)
I've been playing for 2years. I have learned the basics but am still unrefined, so your lessons mean a great deal to me. That you don't charge us to learn touches my heart.
I had to walk away from the small solace of comfort I had nine months ago. I knew that learning the harp would keep me going(and it has).
I can imitate what I hear most of the time(you're impossible to keep up with sometimes). Perhaps I've been using scales and didn't realize it. Lessons are in my future, along with better days and times. Gives me hope when I close my eyes and play from my soul.
I'm in Austin Texas. I have nothing, which is the best time for me to give. I want to help. Give back some.
If there is anything I can do to make this possible, please don't hesitate to let me know.
    Busking is da shit!

Jason! You’re way funny😂 Love the graphics on the little Walter part of the pentatonic scale. It may have been the ghost chiming in.

Hey Jason the big g again from west Virginia .... Hate to bother you but in practicing the major pentatonic for the past five days I switched from playing with the r and b track to the country track and wow !!!! Can't explain it but I'm really digging dirt now with the scale ... that track reminds me of some old sknyard stuff .... I'm tearing it up .... Guess being from west Virginia and growing up with all that country stuff it's just is rooted in me ... Charlie mc coy he's from west Virginia we idolize him up here ... Anywho thanks .....
