- I'm Bruce the cat, the amazing, colour-changing kitten! This is the true story of how I changed from grey and blue to green and black. (PS: I live in New Zealand, where we spell colour with a 'u'.)
I was found on a footpath when I was one day old. Back then I was as small and grey as a mouse.
A few weeks later, when I opened my eyes, they were blue.
When I got bigger, I developed dark points on my paws and face. Lots of people thought I was Siamese!
But then something strange happened.
I got darker…
And darker…
And darker! My fluffy grey fur turned sleek and black.
And then my eyes changed from blue to green.
I’m magic!
But really, there’s a scientific explanation behind my amazing changing colour.
Kittens are born with blue eyes, but most don’t stay that way. At about four weeks old a kitten’s eyes will start to change colour, and they don’t settle into their grown-up colour until about three months old. (It might be a bit later for me, because I’m a bit of a late developer.)
But what about my coat? Why did I change colour from grey to black?
This not only had me stumped, but also my mum, my dad and my vet! I still haven’t been able to find any scientific information about this, but thanks to the internet I am pretty sure I had a condition known as ‘fever coat’.
According to the internet, if the mother cat is sick or stressed during pregnancy, their kittens can be born with fever coat. Fever coat makes the fur appear lighter than it should be, but it usually fades with time. In my case, I changed colour when I shed my kitten coat.

You probably already know this, but the eye change thing is pretty normal for cats. All kittens have blue eyes when they're born, but then they sometimes change color. I can't explain the fur thing, though. But I have to say, Brucie, you are adorbs, no matter what color you are!

One of my cat's kittens did something similar -- but different! He started out as dark as his mother (as solid black cat) and then got lighter and lighter. Last I saw him he was a medium grey cat who could pass as silvery in certain lights. I'm not sure what his final coloration was (he found his forever home and I no longer have contact with him) but I named his Mystery because of his funny coat.
My aunt's cat did the same thing. It's called 'reverse smoke' and usually it will start out dark (black or grey) and slowly transition into a lighter grey or white. Eventually, it will become black or grey again; or at least this is what happened to my aunt's cat, Runt.

Actually .. it's called a Fever Coat .. the mother was sick while prenant. This happens to all coat colors, and as the kitten loses it's kitten coat it grows off.
That is quire strange , one of my sons had a yellow baby tooth and i was told i must have had a fever in the first trimester as that was the cause.

Its actually really common. My cat Tippy started off as a black cat with light gold specks here and there, but now (two years later) shes almost completely golden

Exactly what our little boy did! We thought he would grow up to be a fluffy gray and black maine coon looking cat, but he turned sleek and solid black! He's a gorgeous boy regardless!!!

Well Bruce is a hansom guy, we have a little girl that came to us from my works parking lot. We thought she was a calico but as she got a little older her fur looked like a sable color. My wife name her Turtle (Tortoise Shell Color) when I brought her home. We should have waited; Sable is a more appropriate name for her but Turtle it is and she is a joy.

This cat is like batman. He started out like everyone else, but then he started to change. I'm dying right now! 🤣🤣
Our long haired kitten did exactly that. FYI she is now 4 and has moved on from all black to having a gray ruffle around her neck ( just like when she was tiny !!)
When I got my dog he was 3 months old and completely black with a grey face. As he got older the black grew out of his hair (he's a shih tzu and maltese mix) and it turned more grayish. Now he's almost 3 years old and the bottom half of him looks like he was dipped in flour and the top half is grey, white, and black. At the top of his head are two white patches, and on the sides of his face there's brown hair. It's the strangest thing lol he's still changing color. I think when he turns 3 in May he'll be mostly grey, white, and brown.

Century, in the year 2017 that there are STILL, IGNORANT SUPERSTITIOUS people that ACTUALLY BELIEVE that Black cats bring bad luck ? In some cases they believe that they are considered the hand maiden of the devil. Some REFUSE to cross their path, OR to have one in their home. UNBELIEVABLE ! 😱😵
As an animal rescuer of many years, when someone comes along and tells me that they want to adopt one of my rescued cats.........."BECAUSE I WANT TO GET RID OF THE MICE IN MY HOME".....................I automatically DISQUALIFY them ! WHY ? Because in my experience, these people ONLY want an mice catching MACHINE. NO TRUE LOVE for the Kittie is offered at all ! Once the mice are gone, the cats are ABANDONED ! If the animal becomes ILL, they make NO attempt to get veterinary care ( remember what I said.......these type of people want ONLY an mice catching "MACHINE" ) and will NOT spend one thin dime to get any kind of health care for the POOR SUFFERING animal. They are DUMPED on the streets, and die AGONIZING deaths, and starvation. 😿🙀😿

Omg I just got a baby kitty and his name is Salem too since My name is sabrina I thought it was cute to name him Salem 😂 I found him with his brothers and sister after their mommy passed away but idk if he is of breed so I was searching a cat similar to him and here he is! So cute

I was found on the ground all by myself. My vet thinks my mother was probably a stray who accidentally dropped me when she was moving her litter. Luckily my human mum and dad found me and nursed me to health with special kitten formula, teeny tiny baby bottles and lots of love and affection xx
Bruce the cat I am so sorry that you lost your mum, but am so glad that your human mummy took you in and nursed you back you back to health special equipment, lots of tlc (tender loving care) and tons of love. May all of you have many many more years to share love and companionship with each other.

My kitty might have been one of these. When we got him he was already 4 months old and had short black fur, but had longer, fluffy grey fur on his sides. Gradually all the grey disappeared and he became a long-haired black cat.
We also adopted a little Siamese kitten, but when he grew up he developed tabby-cat stripes!

When kittens r born their eyes r blue as they get older their eyes turn green but thats only for a normal cat other breeds eyes can stay blue or other colours.

My kit, who we found him underneath of our shed when he was 3-4 weeks old, was a beautiful chocolate color with green eyes, and within the span of not even two weeks he went from chocolate to jet black, and his eyes turned gold.

My cat was exactly the same, She was just like this cat when she was little. White eyes, grey body and blue eyes. She is now all black with a little patch of white on her chest. Her eyes are also now brownish green.

black cat with green eyes? Shoulda taken the opportunity and named him Toothless!! XD adorable kitty though, but the eye-colour change happens in humans too born with blue eyes and they change when they get a bit older, or stay blue like half my family.
my family has either blond- when they were younger in the case of my parents- brown-blond, or light brown hair, with green or blue eyes, and slightly darker skin (we got some black people mixed into our family we really gotta do a family tree someday)
ME however, I had red-brown hair, light skin, hazel eyes, and freckles. literally the only family member with freckles. yes I am genetically linked to my family- was adopted by family when i was young, legal papers were signed and my grandparents became my legal parents. So i have genetic ties on my Dad's side. yet he has the brown-blond hair, biological mother had really red hair likely from the wife my dad had at that time.
where my brown eyes and freckles came from i got no clue.

My kitten is doing the opposite! She started out solid black and is now changing to grey with a black face, tip of tail, and legs. Her eyes are also green. She's like a dark version of a siamese.

This happened to my cat! He started a really pale grey, now he is cold black. Sadly in his young kitten hood he was hit by a car. He managed to get up and limp back. We took him to the vet and he got his new leg.
Now he had turned back, and he has been missing for nearly a year now! I just hope we can get him back....

Kittens eyes usually are blue when they are a kitten, over time when they age their eye color begins to change. That happened to my kitten. Also Bruce is so cuteeee!

Well it's because when she's little, her fur wasn't grown yet... So as she grows, her fur gets thicker and thicker and makes the color darker. That's why she changes color... ;)
When I had my first kitten I didn't know that their eyes will change color so when my kitten had blue eyes I was shocked to notice that her eyes turned Hazel then started to look yellow, almost golden and now her eyes are a mix of blue and green
