  • The Kansas/Leftoverture project I'm working on with Tim fletcher is finally up and I'd love for you to check it out. We're already moving forward with the next song on the album.
    Here's the link - www.notreble.c...
    Please be sure to click on "the first part of the book" link to check out the wonderful words that Tim wrote along with the transcription and tab too!
    If you'd like to leave a comment, that would be really nice. The comment section is at the bottom of the NoTreble webpage.
    For your reward, you get the title song off of the "Song For America" by Kansas which came out in 1975 and featured the one and only Dave Hope on bass.
    Here's an Unlisted version as well - • Song For America/Legend

    Phabbulous work there, Troy!
    This has always been my favorite Kansas song, so many great changes and melodies in one song.
    I got to see them play supporting Yes Masterworks tour in Nashville. Gosh,that’s been 25-ish years ago.
    Anyhoo, really enjoyed listening to your video!

      Wanted to add Dave Hope is one of 2 bassists I’ve heard who got that grungy prog twang out of a Precision Bass.

    Oh yes Kansas is definitely going to be a learning curve for me but will be worth the time and effort 💯... I remember you commented on Kansas when you played wayward son and everything you said was so dead on the money and I could not have said it any better because I had the privilege of getting to see them live in Michigan and they were amazing and did not cut any corners in any way and they are a concert I would go to see over and over and never get burned out from it.. and I totally agree with you that anyone who enjoys thier music would be amazed by the energy and precision that is put into the performance 🎸💯..... anyone who has the chance to go see Kansas in concert, I would definitely advise you to. 🎸✌️🎸

    I love those Aria Pro II Super Basses. I have a 1980 SB-750. I have received several compliments from my bandmates on the sound. I replaced the original pickup with a Rautia Guitars pickup (out of Finland or Norway). It is supposed to mimic the sound of a Music Man pickup. A subtle difference, but I like it. That was a chore.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, very high quality instruments they are. This bass actually has a Rautia replacement as well... the, period correct, reverse P-style. What was a chore about it? The purchase? The installation?

    • @benjaminleimkuhler6812
      @benjaminleimkuhler6812 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TJH3113 installation was a chore for me. I had an electrician friend help me. He knows a lot, but we had to bypass the switch that is on the bass. The main chore was we had to use a dremel tool to remove some wood inside the pickup cavity to make room for the cable coming out of the pickup. We started out trying to chisel the wood out. The wood is very hard (huh-huh). It mostly took a long time because my friend couldn’t stay focused on the work at hand. I wasn’t unhappy with the original pickup, but I wondered if there might be some cool sounding replacements out there I could try. I was willing to experiment.

    I have often thought that I would have more fun playing bass in a Kansas cover band than in a Rush cover band, even though Rush is my #1 love. A Song for America is the first Kansas song I heard, beside Dust in the Wind. My brother had the live record album, and I was sitting at the kitchen table, hearing the live version of this song from Two for the Show, and I was blown away. I was about 12, and I was already the world's biggest Rush freak, and I thought this song was a lot like Rush, in its badass-ness. The bass is all over the place. Kansas music is a feast for bass players. Any time I have heard Kansas live in concert, I couldn't hear one bass note. So disappointing. What the hell is wrong with most sound men?

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a very good point and I think I'd have to agree with you, though there would be so many more moving parts in a Kansas tribute. Yeah, bass sound, overall, is pretty much hit or miss. To be honest, I've only heard Geddy sound really good a handful of times out of the many shows I've seen. We saw Kansas at an old theatre in Albany, NY last December and the bass sound was exquisite... just how you want to hear it. I think it has a lot to do with the acoustics of the venue and where your particular seats are located.

      TJH3113 yeah, out of the 20+ Rush shows I’ve seen (all of them Presto and after) I never could hear the bass notes like I wanted to. Vi could see his hands doing cool shit, but couldn’t freaking hear it. So much guitar and bass drum. His distortion seems to blend in too much with the guitar. I have some audience sourced arena bootlegs from Moving Pictures through Power Windows where I can hear his bass really well, with tone and articulation.

      I'll admit that the sound of this bass is a bit "drier" and flatter than I prefer. It tends to blend in a bit more than I'm used to, but it sticks out just enough to make the cut. All of my EQ is coming from a SansAmp Bass Drover Ver. 2 which has a Midrange control unlike the original version. The p/u is the reverse P-style.

    Loved watching all your versions of this masterpiece, and learned most of it from you. However each of your takes is on a different version vs the full song on the remastered album. At 7:28 it is supposed to go back to the intro. There are also some interesting variations from the intro at around 8:03 to 8:10 (I would love to see you play them). The full length is 10:03.

      Thank you. Actually, I believe that this is the same version of the song that I covered years ago. It's off of the "Best of Kansas" compilation. I believe I got this version because the full length version required you to purchase the entire album on iTunes. It's funny, because I was just watching a live clip that I took of them playing the song last December and I notice the change in the arrangement. I thought they just revamped it for live shows, or something like that.

      @@TJH3113 Hi Troy. Nope - that version you heard live is probably close to the original full length version (that is what I have heard them play live recently), and I did notice that the version you did with the Rickenbacker in 2010 was also the shortened version. I am still very impressed by the excellent job that you did with the version you have, I was just hoping to pick up some more from you on that extra part. Take a listen to this version th-cam.com/video/KHbkrHwy7I0/w-d-xo.html. FYI - I was never a big Kansas fan - even during the 70's - until 3 months ago, and since then I've been binging on everything I can find from them. Before that I was in my Chicago/Terry Kath era phase for about 9 months - Peter Cetera was actually a good bass player. Thanks, Steve

      It's really hard to say. This was a do-over, so I'd done another version 10 years earlier, so I had some of it stored in the back of my brain. That being said, every song is different and comes together at its own pace. Learning the song is one thing; getting it to the point to where I can play it straight through without making any glaring errors is another. There have been songs that I've worked on for months.

      @@TJH3113 since we were on the topic of Rush, let me tell you a story of a guy that replied to a post of mine. So, the post I made was that I asked people what their dream bass was, and I explained that my dream bass is the Fender Jazz Bass Geddy Lee Signature. About a week goes by and I enjoyed reading about what basses others own and someday hope to own. Then, some guy tries to tell me that he is Geddy's cousin and tells me that Geddy bought his number one bass (his '72 J Bass) in a 'Porn Shop', yes, 'Porn Shop'. Which I think he meant pawn shop. I highly doubt he is Geddy's cousin because that can just be some random dude in his house that does nothing but browse Talkbass Forums. And, there is a video of Geddy explaining his number one and explaining how he obtained it. I just responded by telling him the real story of hoe he got his number one. He also goes on to tell me that there is nothing special about his number one, and that you can easily buy a Fender J Bass USA and just put a Badass II on it to save money. Nope, I am continuing and will always continue to save so one day I can buy that bass. That is one reason why I dont like TB sometimes. Full of people making up BS stories. So yeah, thanks for reading

      @@DannyBoi2112 The Geddy Lee Signatures are nice basses. Some people say that the ones made in Japan are better than the ones currently made in Mexico, but I don't buy into that. I really don't care for the American made signatures. I have to agree with the fellow about finding the right bass that works for you though. Actually, if you bought a USA model Jazz bass you'd probably wind up paying more than you would for a Japanese or Mexican made signature. I'm not sure if Geddy said it in the video or somewhere else, but sometimes everything just clicks to make a bass special in your hands. There's no secret recipe... you can play 10 Jazz basses and they will all sound different... some slightly and some greatly. I will say that the Signatures all seem to have a fairly consistent sound from bass to bass. I love my Spector basses, but my favorite one of them all is the cheapest, import model. I bought a few, much more expensive Spectors thinking they'd be my #1, but I keep returning to the entry level Legend. I actually just got a comment from a fellow (Luv Basses... I think) on my "Waste of Your Valuable Time Pt. 1" video who say he sold Geddy the seafood green Jazz bass that essentially replaced Geddy's #1. He sounds legit and I asked some followup questions and am looking forward to hearing back from him. Yeah, there are like 5 or 6 guys on TalkBass who comment on every single thread. I can barely stand to look at their avatars. I loathe know-it-alls. One guy has the James Brown bobble-head avatar. I mainly go there to browse the classifieds.
