Hearing this takes me back to my old job. This song was played on the radio on EVERY graveyard shift. This song is difficult to play. You are the bass master.
@@TJH3113 I just saw this comment. Going by the choice of notes and the walking 'swing' bass line - I would say it was Cornick. I had read that it was Cornick who played on it before he was let go.
I saw this upload and I'm like, what? Didn't he upload this before? Man I remember back in high school when I watched you post the original Aqualung cover back in 2011. Seeing Mr. Butter at the end of the video I thought it was a cool touch at the end. I would've never imagined at the time you were going through such a horrible thing like throat cancer. I hope you've beaten that horrible cancer and even if you're fighting it now; I truly wish you nothing but the best. Seeing this reupload with better camera and audio quality, I think all of us long time followers would love to see you possibly do newer covers of songs you've already done; just food for thought. Seeing you look at the camera and do the "Hey!" again made me happy; I remember loving that part of the video. Hope you have an incredible one!
Thanks a lot. Yes, every once and a while I'll go back and re-do one of my favorites that I think will benefit for the enhanced sound and video quality.
Listening with headphones in 2023...thought the chime at 5:33 was MY email....LOL.... Awesome cover. Just finished learning the guitar bits, not the solo...yet, but watching this has me thinking I should learn the bass part. Always one of my favourites.
@@MyBlueZed people are great at pointing out mistakes, but they miss out on things that are real and more significant for existing in nature to be honest.
That guitar solo section is one of the great moments in prog rock history, the interaction between the walking bass and the guitar. Kind of a preview of what Geddy and Alex would bring us a few years later. What's that weird beep at 5:33, though? I thought it was my doorbell at first, until I ran the video back over it to check.
Nice wake up call. Great vid of a timeless classic. Saw Tull multiple times during the late seventies and into the eighties. What a privilege to see this band live. Never a Tull moment. Thanks, have a safe weekend. Curtis
Another Jethro Tull masterpiece! Thank you for figuring this one out, quite intricate without being show-offish. Ian Anderson used to choose his bass players wisely!

Most of the time I listen to this rather than the original song because I love the sound of the bass, lol. I love your covers. Would love if you made a full cover of Thick as a Brick Pt. 1. The bass parts during the guitar solo and the "come on you childhood heroes..." section are my favourite bass moments ever.
So I just received my new custom IEM's. Ironically I was talking with someone today about my "Vinyl Weekends" when my wife goes out of town and I break out all my old vinyl for a love fest. He asked what is the first tune you play and I replied always Aqualung. Anyway I searched for Aqualung on TH-cam to tryout my new IEM's and I figured pick one with some bass. I have to admit, your rendition was stellar!!!! I honestly could not stop smiling. I got so wrapped up in your playing, I even forgot to critique my new investment. VERY well done!

The Fixx have always been my favorite band. Seen them 12 times ever since the 1980's. I like "Going Without" studio version from the Missing Links Album. Good bass line and fun to play. Thanks.
good to see that you still upload! recently remembered watching your cover of Sledgehammer like 5 years ago and thought I'd check out your channel again.
Seriously these videos are some of the most impressive bass playing I've ever heard. Your tone out of these Guild basses is so perfect that it inspired me to buy an SB-202 like yours. Now if only I had the talent to go with it! Lol. The middle section of Aqualung with the walking bass is MY favorite tone ever. My SB-202 will be candy apple red. And I'm going to have a black abalone pickguard made for it. And it already has the Babicz bridge upgrade.
Thank you very much for the very kind words. Congratulation on the Guild. I prefer the sound using the only the bridge p/u, if that's any help. I found that the output and tone really suffered when both p/u's are selected. I've had a couple of pick guards made by "PickguardPlanet". They have all the oddball templates and they do nice work, though the ordering process is a bit cumbersome. Good on the Babicz upgrade. I've done it too all of my Guilds.
Excellent!!! Love this Bass line!! Always thought the Bass moved the song along in this tune. I heard two different stories about who played it. I thought it was Jeffrey Hammond, but he didn't know how to play and had to be taught. Then I had heard it might of actually been Glenn Cornick, it was just recorded before he was let go. Ahh Aqualung, such a classic. Always had a soft spot for this album and song. Love the bass line too. I never noticed just how good that basses tone is. Can be bright if you attack it like you do during the louder parts, but so bassy and warm during the slower parts. Very dynamic instrument, sounds beautiful. Well played as per usual! Always the kick in the butt for me to go play I need some days. Didn't know you were going through cancer in the older video. Hope it's all squared away and you're feeling better! That sounded horrible from what you typed out.
Thanks a lot. Yes, I love these Guild basses. Sorry I waited so long to get one...or 4. Coming up on 7 years cancer-free which is good, but nothing is guaranteed.

Great playing! Hope you're doing well, sounds like a whole lotta no fun. We also have many cats we love dearly. One, an ill tempered female named...Butters. We rescued her from certain death. Mother abandoned her at about 3 weeks in 100+ degree heat. She was in our planter box crying. My wife scooped her up and put her on my lap as I sat in my chair. We stared at each other for about 5 seconds before she hissed at me! Been in love with her ever since. She hates us most of the time, but we love her all the same! 🤘😎🤘
Well done. I was thinking before I read your notes, this dude (I knew his name was Ian Anderson) has got to be my mother;s age... She is 1946 vintage, so I was close.
I was never much of a Tull fan but I give credit where it's due. Classic tune right here. Excellent cover my good dude. The bass is amazing in this one and you nailed it as always 😎👍👍👍 #fuckcancer
Thanks. I agonized over this for years. I would always play the Bb because the guitar was obviously playing a Gm, but something about it never sounded right. When I did my first cover of this song, I referenced an isolated bass track and discovered that he is actually playing a major scale over a minor chord. The bass is pretty murky sounding, so it doesn't really stand out.
Thanks for your amazing work, and to share it! i loved aqualung, and because of you i made it! when i listened aqualung, so young was i, (im 58), i didn t think the bass was so hard (i see in concert bass version less difficult played by jethro) i hope you feel better! thanks a lot ps= sorry for my english (i m french^^ and when will you play Mr Zappa?)
Just seeing this. You did this before. (But this has better sound). This is perfect example of a precisely orchestrated bass part and you got it all! The placement of the harmonies, the varying walking lines that are mostly arpeggios with displaced rhythms and logical voice leading -- it's all almost too perfect not to be worked out beforehand. This had to be a tough one to figure out. There seems to be some discrepancy as to who played bass on the original. Glen Cornick claims he did, but Jeffry Hammond is credited and it seems more his style. Hammond was an interesting talent -- mainly a painter (and a very good one) who supposedly played "hobby bass" but Anderson preferred his personality to Cornicks so, Glen was out, Jeffry was in. (!!!) And man, talk about rising to the occasion! I wonder if all of his parts were written by Anderson and he just executed them to a tee. But perhaps Hammond just had that clean structured approach. His style seems "neater" then Cornick's. (whose playing I love by the way). Anyway, your take inspired me to go back and work out some of those parts. Well done as usual!
@@TJH3113 The "later day" Tull bass parts did seem extremely tight and well rehearsed. The "walking lines" in Aqualung are very Cornick-esque. I wouldn't be surprised if Anderson didn't give him album credit out of spite. There seemed to be some unfortunate resentment there. At any rate, great job, and now I'm going to check out your Glascock covers. : )
Aw, I'm very sorry for your loss. Butter was an incredible cat and really deserved more time. He lived a very hard life before we got him and it was great to see him blossom after we took him in. He was the sweetest grump you'd ever meet.
Yet another fantastic cover but with quite a different tone to your original video but you kept the ‘hey” two minutes in. How are you recording the videos nowadays? I got back from holiday in the US a few days and thought of you as I was flying over New York on the way back to the UK. A slightly different route to the one I was expecting thanks to the storms on the east coast and Delta cancelling my flight from DC. It’s all part of the adventure. Keep up the great work.
I got it from Pickguard Planet and can't remember the name of the color. It looks like they've discontinued a number of them. They have a lot of templates for oddball instruments like this.
Damn...If I'm looking for a bass cover I always come to you because I know it's right note for note. You are the best!

I was never much of a Tull fan but I give credit where it's due. Classic tune right here. Excellent cover my good dude. The bass is amazing in this one and you nailed it as always 😎👍👍👍
#fuckcancer
Yes, a definite classic. Thank you very much.
Love this song
Awesome
Awesome!
Thanks!
Amazing!!!
Thanks a lot.
LOVE IT!
Thank you.
Hope you get better, just lost my dad to bile duct cancer June 26th... :(
I'm very sorry for your loss.
Nice! I see you are using B after G, for instance on walking bass formula start. Isn't that Bb? (sounds like the chord is Gm)
Thanks for your amazing work, and to share it! i loved aqualung, and because of you i made it! when i listened aqualung, so young was i, (im 58), i didn t think the bass was so hard (i see in concert bass version less difficult played by jethro)
i hope you feel better! thanks a lot
ps= sorry for my english (i m french^^ and when will you play Mr Zappa?)
Thank you.
Thank you Nelson. To me, it sounds more like Cornick than Hammond. I thought that Hammond’s sound and style was more similar to Glascock’s.
Was that Ron Burgundy on the Flute ? LOL.........NICE COVER THX
Haha, that was a great scene. Thanks.
Another awesome lesson, thnx. Out of curiosity, do you by any chance own any old school Kramer bass guitars?
Thank you. No, unless you consider the NS2A's Kramers. Technically, they are.
As always solid playing Troy! Any chance you could give Wishbone Ash - Sometime World, a try?
Thanks. I'll check it out.
I just lost my 15 year old dog. I feel your pain. I’m sure I would have loved Butter
Aw, I'm very sorry for your loss. Butter was an incredible cat and really deserved more time. He lived a very hard life before we got him and it was great to see him blossom after we took him in. He was the sweetest grump you'd ever meet.
That Mr. Butter appearance was perfect since he's the same color as the bass haha.
I know, he was a wonderful, creamy-peach color.
Yeah, I do that even when it comes on the radio...can't help myself. You should have dropped by.
1:19 to 2:14 the quintessential prog walking bass
It is, isn't it?
increadible
thank you
The best!
Thanks.
what kind of finish is that on your front plate? your bass looks amazing im jealous
I got it from Pickguard Planet and can't remember the name of the color. It looks like they've discontinued a number of them. They have a lot of templates for oddball instruments like this.
How to you learn all the bass tracks you play? Do you learn by ear or do you read the actual notations?
I play by ear and memory.
Nice bass
Thanks.
NICE.
THANKS.
Yup.........I just crushed the bass part during the guitar lead...........time for a sip or two of coffee!!
😂☕️
Você tem quantos contrabaixos?
Dois ... quero dizer "também", como em "muitos".
