  • Meet Ernest Fear who left Chew Magna for America in 1888 and returned to visit his old home and make this 16mm colour film 50 years later. He hired a Bristol cameraman to film where he was born above where Pearce’s butcher shop is now. We meet a number of village characters, see the village pump in action and the Co-op when it was still a three storey hotel. Apart from the Co-op it's amazing how little the village has changed in nearly 100 years.
After Ernest’s visit there is some follow up footage he asked the same cameraman to take in 1942 which shows Chew Magna and Bristol during the war.
It is apparently the only known colour footage of Bristol during the blitz.
This edited version of Mr. Fear's films was produced by Chew Valley Films.

I was born in Chew Stoke and raised in Bishop Sutton. Now I'm thousands of miles away in Las Vegas Nevada, so this beautiful little film made me very very homesick. Thank you so much for posting it..:)

I'm glad you enjoyed it. There are lots more films about the Chew valley on my channel. How long ago did you leave England?

Magnificent! Amazing footage. I lived in Chew Magna for 7 years (on the High Street above 'Moondance Cafe'. It's probably my favorite place on earth. So beautiful and green. I'm in the US now but can't wait to return one day. Thanks for posting 🙂
