With timelapses, you can say goodbye to your shutter pretty quickly. Let's say you want to make a 1 minute long timelapse video with 30 frames per second framerate. This means you need 1800 shutter actuations (30fps x 60s) to get that result. I now only use video for timelapses, and record in 1080p, because that's the Instagram limit, and keeps my filesize low. I speedramp it in Premiere and that's it.
The cons of video timelapse is we can't get photos out of it especially the post-process isn't possible. Photo timelapse can generate both video timelapse files and picture files when we process them on the right software.
Never used an intervalometer for video? It saves only the frames needed for video and video is made in camera. You can set the timer for when it saves frames to whatever you want. Less file size than pictures.
Great video! Does the same apply to hyperlapses? I want to do a hyperlapse during sunrise using the crane gimbal but im not sure if i should do it with photos or with video and whether the video should be 24,60 or 120 fps.
thank you Matthew, great information. The only problem I have with my 6Dmkii in timelapse movie mode is the minimum interval of 1 second between shots. For traffic I find I want continuous shooting about 0.5fps with 2sec shutter, but no intervals. The best I can do now is use my c300mkii at 1fps. Would you recommend going the stills route at this point for continuous 2second exposures? Thanks, Jon
I'd recommend using an external remote, setting your shutter speed and locking the shutter button on the remote by pushing it down and sliding it forward. With the camera in drive mode it will keep shooting at it's max pace until your card is full or until your buffer is full.
Just subscribed to your channel. Find your videos very helpful. Any tips on reducing the movement when doing drone timelapse? Using the Phantom 4 but too much moment to effectively stabilize my footage in Premiere.
Can you make a recommendation please? I am an open water ocean swimmer and will swim between 1 - 4+ miles and want to buy a camera for capturing images and time lapse or video underwater, so far I am considering Sea Life (uses time lapse) Cameras or Go Pro (assumed uses video). I am very inexperienced in photo/video.
Many cinema camera style video cameras also include time-lapse functions in them. You are talking about simply speeding up 24/25/30 fps playback in Premiere Pro etc, if I am understanding you correctly, that's *not* what you want to do with a proper cinema video camera. For example, the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 2.5k and Production Camera 4k both have time-lapse built right into their recording functionality. You can choose to either record that time-lapse to 1920x1080 HD ProResHQ or to 2.5k QHD or 4k UHD CinemaDNG RAW files. So anyone with one of those cameras can essentially do time-lapse, in 12-bit raw, with 13 stops of dynamic range, so that the resulting time-lapse video sequence can be fully color-graded and edited. Plus you can use your Canon EF lenses... I was hoping that this video would give me some insight as to your thoughts on time-lapse with a cinema camera vs DSLR.
Thanks Matthew! I have a question for you, or anyone really. I've been shooting some timelapses, editing the RAW files in Lightroom, then creating the timelapse within After Effects. The problem though is that the output file from AE is SEVERAL Gigabytes! My computer has a hard time creating and replaying a 10 GB file. Is there something I'm missing to make it smaller? Timelapse is only about 20 seconds long.
Great video. Subscribed. One thing you didnt mention is the intervals. Do you capture images every second, 5 minutes, 1 hour, ect and for what projects. Im going to rebuild my deck and wondering if I should do 1 or 5 seconds.
Cheers! Interval depends on how many photos you want to end up with, if you're shooting something like a deck build I'd go with 10 to 20 seconds instead (depending on how long you plan on taking). I've got a free e-book with more info if you're interested: www.matjoez.com/freebook
@@MatthewVandeputte Thank you was just curious. I use either my 1Ds Mark 3 or 5D on a Syrp slider and a couple mini Genies but have used my 300 as well.
How often do you go though cameras? Don't timelapes require thousands of photos for a single timelape? I mean camers are rated for 100 to 150k photos....thats not a lot for many timelpes and error....😪😪
Thanks so much again Mat, your videos are fantastic. Straight to the point, informative, funny and easy to understand. LEGEND :)

Nice one again Matthew.
I feel like I’ve had dinner and a show 😂 love your way of explaining things, and your humour.
Great content! Its keeps getting better these days. Keep it up dude!
One of the best quick explanations with examples on this topic! Will reference this to anyone who'll ask me this question from now on. Cheers!
Awesome, glad you like it

Good looking out mate!
Thanks for the tips Matthew.
"long answer no one asked for" well I thought it was wicked informative! Thank you!
I liked that last bit 😄
Eyyy Matt, i love bloopers!! Hope all is well!! Thanks for posting. Bye.
"Focus on my eyeballs!" bahaha! See I didn't leave before the bloopers 😊🌟

Can you edit timelapse in lightroom bc the other software is too expensive for me.
Yes! Awesome explanation bro. Ive been loving getting more into timelapses.
There's a lot of photography tip channels out there, this video was great!
But im subscribeling because of that funny ass intro I cracked up so hard!
Sweet thank ya

Yew thanks for the support bro!
but i'm the first who says: i'd eat timelapses if I could, bam :P
Helpful for sure! Thanks :)
I actually always ask this, that's why I'm here!
Love the bloopers. 😂

How do you deal with condensation on the lens face when shooting starry nights?

what's your favorite Milky Way setup? I use the 6d and tamron 15-30, thinking about getting a sigma 35 too. The 6dmii is noisier than the 6d? thanks!
Tnx dude 👌

Depending on your resolution it's normal to have huge files. I use apple prores hq codec and also end up with massive files.
Matthew Vandeputte Thanks! At least I know I'm not the only one.
Thank you
Yesssss!!
THANK U SO MUCH
Stupid question, do you set on timelapse while you shoot or only during editing before posting it on youtube? Thanks.

That intro is gold😂
Glad you dig it
Question, what are you thoughts about using a C300 Mark ii which allows increment video captures?
It'd be useful if you need it and it's the only camera you have but I suggest getting a dedicated timelapse camera if timelapse is what you're after!

Took me long enough

Hi Matthew! Do you use LRTimelapse?
Oh my god. You answered the question I’ve been asking :)
Glad you like it
nice ... where do you edit ?
At home
I meant a program?
Yo Matt! Any clue which is the best/cheapest option for a motion rig so I don't get into a "financieel probleem"?
haha. I only use Kessler gear as I'm an official ambassador, check out their TLS system which is rocksolid
if 1080p is 2mp and the 6d is 26mp, is the 1DX 2 not as good as it's 20mp?
The 1DXMkII has other things going for it such as AF speed, battery life and video resolution and frame rates.
Great video man! Geen probleem haha
that ending! ...was kinda romantic :P :P :P
