As an owner of dobes (working as a professional trainer) for 27 years, this is a dog I wouldn't have gotten, knowing the advertised problem. I had one years ago that made me believe some dogs are born mentally ill. The stress and management needed for 13 years was unbelievable (instructive, tho). This age of dobe is the age when most people surrender their dobe. Adolescence+unstable personality is just starting. I would neuter as soon as growth plates close, and I don't like neutering. Also, I would run, not walk, to a behaviorist for 1 on 1 work. Don't rule out medication either. I would be watching out for ocd behavior as well. Good luck from one that's been in your shoes.

Good points, This dobe was imported , I hope this dobe had an honest temperament test to ensure stability in unfamiliar surroundings ( out in public or different houses) . Like Ed said " it will take time for the dog to become accustomed to new surroundings" I hope this is the case. If the dog has scrambled eggs for a brain get ready for a decade of Management but a hell of a education in dog behavior

Thank you Ed and Cindy, as a student of Leerburg for years, I have found all of your content to come from experience and common sense which is essential with some of these potentially problematic dogs.

I watched this when my male Euro Dobe was 16 weeks and having the same issues. I wish I had really listened. At 8 months I had made my boy a highly reactive, stressed, unhappy boy by not protecting him from his triggers, pushing him too hard and not focusing on my relationship with him. Once I focused on the relationship 2 months ago, things turned around - that and melatonin. Go gentle on these reactive dogs, not everything is about dominance and obedience. Listen to this guy. He knows his stuff.

Agreed 100%. I pushed a couple of my high drive dogs years ago and they pushed back. Had to go to plan B and got in touch with Leerburg. Their advise coupled with learning to communicate and build a relationship with my dogs was a game changer for me and the dogs that came along afterwards.

100% agree on your assessment regarding puberty. I am raising a female Malinois for IGP, who went through a late fear stage at around eight months. For a while I thought I going to have to return her to the breeder. She came out the other side at around ten months with an excellent, social temperament and has great potential. It’s hard to predict, when they go through this, how they will end up. Be patient!

I watch your channel frequently. I never fail to be amazed at the number of people who
(obviously) don't do research on dog breds and
1.) Who think that having multiple dogs without individual crates AND a secure (high-)
    fenced yard is okay.
2.) That people *with families* think that rescuing a dog like a Pitbull, Rottie, GSD, etc.
is a good idea! Are they candidates for a Darwin award?

First dog I ever trained (socialization rehab) was a doby named Trouble who would all out attack any dog who went near his rear end. He was only 4. I muzzled him and trained him like mad. After two months, he earned his rights to his teeth back and I never used a muzzle with him for the rest of his life and he spent many years at a large city park meeting all kinds of dogs. He was INTENSE. Then I met another Doby who was 2 with the exact same issue. Crazy fear aggression from a fight when they were pups. The younger Doby was even more intense than the first one. Eventually, we had them walking together without muzzles, fighting, or any bad behavior at all, all off-leash. Doberman Pinschers are extremely intelligent (all dogs are) and I just used their intelligence to their own favor and set them up for success. This was all years ago as both dogs passed away now from a long life. RIP Trouble and Java!

Dobies are jiggy anyway. Good luck, Ed and Leerburg are fantastic teachers.

The excessive reactivity is an issue. Most useful apprehension dogs have same sex aggression.
