Since its design and construction in 2019, Interceptor 004 has been on quite the journey. Live cameras on your Interceptors could bring in so many new viewers and possible donations to the project. Something to consider, thanks for what you folks have accomplished and we all look forward to what’s next.
That would be most awesome. I was already searching for something like we got when Wilson first went offshore. I can already imagine putting all those streams together into one view or running image detection on the video stream to analyze what kind of trash is being picked up!
@@lucasgasenzer you could tie them with a weather station to battle plants and peak demands due to excessive rain fall. Trouble shoot problems as they happen and store images to catch what happens before problems start.
I actually asked them to do this on Instagram. They said they would eventually, but they probably forgot. I really want the livestream too🙏🏼

I am so happy to see this ingenious work functioning and that despite the difficulty and setbacks caused by the pandemic, bad weather and so on, the 004 interceptor is up and running again. I am happy that it is in my country. I know this is the beginning of a beautiful work towards the improvement of the handling of plastics and of course the care of the island's natural water resources. I know that this will permeate the hearts and minds of young people to be part of the change. I am one of those! Many blessings.

@@Sandlin22 yes, but our disposal and "recycling" isn't as perfect as people tell themselves and are told by institutions and government. You can read howmuch of a scam recycling is in many cases.

A slight modification, If the Interceptors had a panel that went from the back where the rubbish is collected, out a few feet and dipped 6-12 inches below the surface, it would catch hold of the floating vegetation. Pushing it under the interceptor, leaving the plastic floating, and into the interceptor. Cos the vegetation will have part of it below the surface, unlike plastic that floats on top of the water.
I believe water hyacinth is not native to these waters and it is probably a good idea to get it out of the water.
Wherever you roam, bring some big plastic bags, reusable of course, and PICK UP SOME TRASH!! Let's help the Interceptors team, they do water, we do land. Please, you would never treat your home like this, don't treat the world like garbage, pick some up!!! Jeannie in Lakeport California. p.s. I do it, you can too!!

Well done for installing number 4. I saw that a big part of the intercepted stuff from the river was green. Things like leaves and branches from trees. I wonder how big of an impact that has on operations, and how the non-plastic which is caught is handled. Greetings from Rotterdam

I am so proud of everything you have achieved especially during the pandemic. I'm so glad I randomly watched the unveiling of the first interceptor. As always, it is super exciting to see updates from you guys. A lot of people talk about saving the world, The Ocean Cleanup is out there doing it!
Ocean CleanUp is doing so much 💪on a global scale to help clean Oceans and Rivers. Is anything else being done on the ground by local Governments to help educate people about the importance of taking care of their environment (especially those leaving in coastal lines)?
Can local Governments provide more resources (trash containers or frequent regular pickup of trash) so people can take ownership of their environment and keep it clean for the health and safety of their children, and future generations.
Perhaps getting local team to volunteer and organize coastal clean ups every month will also help. I don’t leave anywhere near a body of water, but I would totally volunteer.

You need a break away system on the boom that releases on an over load and can be reset. The system could still have a long line connected to the boom so the boom could be hauled back in and reattached. Although a mechanism like a ski boot binding could work, also a cheap aluminum pin that shears in case of a boat collision or storm over load.
I cant belive greenpeace gets more atencion than this. THIS is helping the world, not that scam from greenpeace that says "oH nO GMo BAd". They say they dont want plastic in the sea and they dont do nothing about it. This channel is the example of what we should do. We need more proyects like this

I have a suggestion, "Automated SORTING Mechanism"
you can implement automated sorting using robotic arms or some other mechanism that will separate the organic matter from plastics. I believe some systems exists out there that can do this tedious and difficult task using high speed cameras, robotic arms, air guns that literally blow the lighter plastic material off the conveyor into a secondary collection unit.
I emphasize sorting because, it appears there is just too much garbage in most rivers and you would probably end up collecting too much organic material which would end up decomposing in the open anyways. I know that will be the case when you use this system in most of South East Asian rivers and Indian rivers.

Suggested solution for the water hyacinths: Could the interceptor have a camera detecting what is about to enter it and if it detects the level of water hyacinths is above a certain threshold, it activates a diverter/bypass, blocking entry to the interceptor and allowing everything in the barrier to bypass the system until the water hyacinths concentration is below the threshold? This could also be manually activated by operators as a precautionary measure ahead of weather events that are likely to cause issues. Yes, this might mean some rubbish gets missed while the interceptor is in divert/bypass mode, but weigh that against the downtime of a clogged system or the bins getting emptied with mostly water hyacinths in them...
What is done with the plastic that's collected? THANK YOU for your work!!! This is needed in so many places, no doubt!

8:21 this truck takes the River trash , puts it in the landfill and from there the next storm blows it back into the river. Without incinerators, this cycle will never end.

I think all this really shows how people actually work. We're literally biologically hardwired to work together and so aggressively social we want to help one another. If we removed the corporate need to work then we would have more. Think movies; they really do advance technology, and it's in working together we make real advances.

From a funding perspective, getting these machines onto rivers like the Thames or Danube would help finance projects in less affluent areas.
Not really. There's not enough plastic that enters the ocean from those rivers that governments would want to pay for the interceptor, especially at an increased price. Plus, every one that's placed sub optimally just means more plastic enters the oceans.
The Whole World needs to be returned as a affluent World …Not a one location!

What Ocean Cleanup doing is simply amazing but we should really be taking more initiatives to make people to change their habits of polluting the waters to begin with.

Amazing work on the Interceptors! Now its time to make them more efficient. I see a lot of water plants are gathered and collected in the bins.
Are they also recylcled or are they just waste of space in the bins?
A sorting application could be implemented using robots above the conveyor. You could use a vision system to identify plants / natural materials and remove them from the conveyor using waterproof robots (IP67). This would result in a higher ratio of plastic to plants and the time to replace the bins would increase.
The plants you are seeing here are water hyacinth, which are a non-native and invasive species. Removing them is actually beneficial to the river life, so it's a bit of a bonus. Any organic waste is sorted by the local waste management, who make the decision on which organic matter should be returned to the river to keep the ecosystem intact.

But I do slightly worry about unintended consequences of removing floating vegetation... such as water hyacinth in places where it is native (South America), or coarse woody debris. What would rely on that vegetation downstream? What will be the effect of removing that carbon sink of biological matter into the deep ocean? Anyway, right now as your videos make abundantly clear, biological matter (even water hyacinth) is outweighed substantially by human trash. So thank you once again from the bottom of my heart for your vision, your skill and your sheer persistence.

Any way they can separate organic waste from pastic waste would be great. Organic waste can be reused and made into compost among other things.

You already work with scientists. in order to bring more money into your business, you could sell your plastic raw materials to the companies that produce plastic goods and could recycle your collected plastic and pay you for it. I admire your job and am very grateful for what you do!

Every school child in the world should be taken out 1 day a month into their local area to collect trash. It would cost very little and have a big impact.

What about using computer vision to differentiate between plants (hyacinths) and trash? You could redirect the hyacinth away from the interceptor mouth so to not clog it up
I would also reccomend incertaining any and all plastics into any tar or concrete or anyting used for roads. It will be a win, win for everyone since the plastics are not and cannot be recycled. Everyone has been lied to!
