- Always Board Never Boring is back with another playthrough battle report for Avalon Hill's edition of HeroQuest. This time ABNB is playing Terrellia's Maze, the third solo mission from the Mage of the Mirror expansion. Ethan the elf ventures into a deadly maze created by the (supposedly nice) Elven Queen Terrellia in order to prove his worth. This turns out to be a bad idea. Where's Ethel when you need her?

Have really enjoyed this series. It has been great to see some new (for me) quests, and some new enemies. When the new Heroquest came out I decided not to buy it, because I had the original version, and the four expansions that were readily available in the UK. Now I can't really buy the new extra expansions like this one because of the different scale, and I don't want to buy it all again, so I'm a bit stuck. I'm hoping you do some more Heroquest playthroughs in the future, even if we don't get to see Ethan again.
Thanks. There will definitely be more playthroughs of some description. I am keeping Ethan's character sheet in case one day he feels like putting his armour back on for one more adventure.
Wow what an adventure. Loved the big brain move, Ethan is smart elf. Maybe in the future a walktrough of the dread moon.

In my head cannon you are not doing any group play through a because Ethan has noped out Nope! I am not your elf.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring but there is a posibillity that ethel wil help the new knight on his quest. I also would love to see a full walktrough of the base game and even all the expansions. But i also understamd that would take a lot off time and maybe would make to much spoilers for players who haven't played the game yet. Anyways thanks for the video's, i would wach anyting from this channel. I love youre vibe amd passion for these type of games. Real old school
The problem with revisiting the core game on the channel is I know the map layouts, having played through them as a hero and as Zargon, so I think it would be difficult to make it a compelling watch. But I do have plenty of ideas, more playthroughs, and many other games to cover or revisit, so hopefully still lots to look forward to.
My wife and I really enjoyed the video. We like to think that as the last goblin stood there,gnashing its teeth,the wolf,angry and still spoiling for a fight,took a big bite of the goblin. LOL

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I'd like to think that goblin was a neophyte Necromancer, who just summoned his first ghoul. Not bad, but no match for Ethan the clever!
After attacking with a crossbow do you still get to defend with a shield? Or do you just play the crossbow one handed and therefore may be used with a shield?

I covered swapping weapons in a different video. The way I rule it is that you can carry whatever you want, and you can change what you are using as a free action on your turn, but once you make an attack on your turn your loadout is "locked in" until your next turn. This prevents you from attacking with a two-handed axe, and the switching back to a shield to defend.
However, there is no restriction in the rules or on any cards regarding using a shield with a crossbow, so you can still benefit from having a shield.
My absolute favorite commentary after falling in the pit, "Queen Talleria continues to prove, she is a bit of a dick!" 😂😂

Where did you find those COOL 3-D Blocks?
3D blocks are from Archon Studio's Abomination Vaults and Mantic Games' Dungeon Debris Terrain Crate.

Question, where did you get your wall pieces from that you use in the corridors instead of the tile pieces?
Thanks. Some of the rubble piles are from Archon Studio's Abomination Vaults. However, there are only six rubble piles in that set, so I also have rubble piles from the Dungeon Debris Terrain Crate by Mantic Games, which also has some double-space rubble and other bits and pieces.

Could you have not moved diagonally and shot the abomination with the crossbow through the door? I thought it couldn't be used if they are adjacent to you. All this time I've been playing it wrong 😂
The rule is you can't shoot anything adjacent to you, and there is much debate over whether or not that should include diagonals because the original rules never really defined adjacency clearly, Avalon Hill's core rules define adjacency as the four orthogonally adjacent spaces, but then rules for large monsters include diagonals as adjacent. My ruling has always been you cannot use a ranged attack on anything in the eight immediately adjacent spaces, otherwise the crossbow is too powerful and the longsword is a bit pointless.
@Always Board Never Boring Fair points, I'm only on mission 8 of the kellars keep expansion at the moment. I have of all of them but haven't come across any large monsters with the diagonal/adjacent rule yet so didn't know it existed. Might have to rethink my goblin crossbow spamming from doorways from now on.
At the moment only the Frozen Horror itself and the giant wolves can do diagonal attacks (and skeletons if you use the new advanced rules for them). I think people will pick to play with whichever rule suits them best, as it isn't perfectly clear, but I like to make crossbow users back up a bit, while longswords can benefit from being up close when attacking diagonally.

No. You need to have line of sight.
So you can solo / single play HQ?
The new edition has a companion app (not available in all territories) that you can use to run the dungeon for you, and then some of the expansions (Frozen Horror and Mage of the Mirror) have solo quests intended for one hero. The usual format is four heroes versus either a real Zargon player or the app.
Ugh, one my biggest pet peeve with quests like this is "traps in front of doors." What worse is the traps are usually pit traps, meaning that the rest of the players have to jump the pit to have access to the room. So unfair.
When I played this as a kid, I use to try to jump the space even though I am not sure if the space was trapped or not.
I recently went through the Against the Ogre Horde adventure on the channel and (without saying too much) that makes use of traps behind doors. It's a design I really disapprove of.
the thing with the flashback spell was genius! it's those instances that tell you how deep heroquest can get.
If there's a way to avoid fighting a giant wolf, you can count on Ethan to find it.

Sorry for reviving a year-old video. I had been wandering if heroes from one campaign carry over their equipment earned during that campaign. Reddit threads answer the question with a yes. If that was the case wouldn't the treasure deck be gradually reduced to just traps and monsters? In this video the hero starts with some pretty impressive kit which would indicate gear is retained between campaigns. It's been a long time since I played and mostly we played custom missions.
You don't keep the cards from the treasure deck. You make a note of the stuff on your character sheet and discard the card. At the start of each new quest all discarded treasure cards are returned to the deck.
Heroes DO keep all their equipment between campaigns, but the video you are watching is the third mission in a campaign that was started with a fresh hero. Everything they have with them was earned in this campaign.

Been on a ABNB binge lately as I go through my latest Heroquest obsession wave where I can't stop thinking about the game and acquiring any material to expand it haha. This is just what I wanted to see pop up in my feed today. I've been doing a lot of Advanced Heroquest collecting lately, looking for suitable minis to fill out the roster but trying to keep it all plastic since I have an aversion to metal minis for some reason. My last acquisitions were 10 beastmen from Battle Masters, and a couple of Talisman 3rd Edition minis as proxies (High Priest as a Lich, Chaos Necromancer as a Vampire, etc.). I sadly forgot to check my bid this morning on the Talisman 3rd Edition Dragon mini and some lucky SOB got it for $30......kicking myself. I know Enhanced Advanced has rules for Wolves, so these Elf Quest wolves will have a place for sure.

But it was one of those minis you come across not looking for it and just have to have, missed my chance haha. Look forward to your next acquisition update, that vampire was a great find.
Also, I think Queen Terrellia has so many zombies because they would be too unaware/stupid as to accept their reward for freedom whenever a hero failed her maze.

I am definitely dubious about anyone who has a dungeon full of monsters that she is prepared to free if they murder people for her.

tut tut - you should've rolled for movement after revealing the wolf and goblin :p might not have reached the wall ;)
I had started my turn before opening the door and therefore it was classed as unthreatened movement.

It's very powerful. I can see that getting more uses per turn could potentially ruin all the best bits of a scenario.

So, my question is, why do you not search for treasure in the bottom of pits?
Hi - it's very flattering to be called Ash, but he's a much bigger TH-camr over on GMG. I'm Kevin, although most people round here just call me ABNB.
Regarding pits. Back in 1989, using the UK version of the rules, searching in the bottom of pits wasn't a thing. It's a rule from the American rules set that I just didn't like. The idea of falling down a pit, and then while you're down there thinking, "Hmm, before I climb out I'm just going to loot this corpse of a previous hero who didn't survive the fall" didn't sit well with me. It also slowed the game down. I only allow one search per room as well, rather than one search per hero. As Zargon, if it starts to look like heroes are short of items, I will just drop a few healing potions or something into a room for them.

Did the old UK rules say diagonally adjacent counts?
The picture in the rule book shows only orthogonal adjacent as counting adjacent.
I read that as meaning crossbows can attack the same square as long swords, staffs, etc.
