Nice wee demonstration of the new playing format. I’m on a train right now wishing I brought the arena mode… it lends itself to a portable HQ playing format. 🚂 🎲 🛡️ 💀 ⚔️
Wow you did a great job. My son and I started a tournament style with hero vs hero in teams of two and our first one went pretty long. This was amazing it is obvious that you have been doing this for a while and have a handle on how to do things in a smooth and connected way. Even when you go on a tangent everything still seems smooth and connected. Thanks for inspiring us to try.
I don't think it's fair to allow the Heroes to have a higher point value of team composition than the monsters considering Heroes have way more body points.
Thank you so much for this video! I needed this example/tutorial. This weekend I’m heading up to Seoul to run HeroQuest at a comic/rpg shop. I was gonna run the core campaign and bring along the ogre expansion just to feature this pvp play style. Oh, and sell copies of the cleric heroes set from B3D. :)
Only the heroes add an extra point to your total - Barbarian 4, Dwarf 3, Knight 3 is 10 points compared to 6 points of skeletons (each skeleton archer is worth 2 points.) So this was quite an imbalanced arena fight
Nicely done sir. I'm a fan of this addition to the game, even if the relative unit strength formulas is a bit overly simplistic... BUT, that's HQ in a nutshell. If there's to be more to this "Series", I invite you to head over to BGG and check out the Arena Team Rosters I put up a few weeks back. Appropriately basic design to match the basic system...*Chuckle*.. Regardless, kudos on the demo video and, hopefully, new series... Dare we hope?
Can enemies with ranged weapons attack adjacent heroes? I vaguely recall ranged hero weapons, like the crossbow, being unable to attack adjacent enemies. Wondering if the same rule applies to monsters?
Most can - they normally have rules for attacking adjacent heroes. The ranged monsters in AtOH as well as the elf archers from RotDM and MotM have a different weapon they use when attacking melee.
Fun game, you left your skellies a little short handed. Your team scores should have came out to 10 (hero's) vs 6 (skel), and not 10 vs 9. Monsters don't add +1 to each monster for their team score, only hero's do. This is most likely to offset the hero's higher than average stats for BP & abilities, and match them with more monsters than hero's overall (although likely still in favor of the hero's if the challenge ratings are kept close to or less than equal). The overall attack & defend die are fairly close between your teams, but you set up a 22 BP vs 3 BP battle, which statistically will never favor the skeleton archers. You can see from the two examples given of teams in the instruction book that monster scores are not adjusted with a +1 in their individual or team total scores. If this continues as a series, with each victory, do you have a plan to adjust the opposing team score with each game? Or will it be a score of 10 for each team going forward, and the hero's aren't able to recover BP's?
I was disappointed to miss that detail in the rules for sure. But it now makes the monsters make more sense in terms of power. Series will kind of be experimental, but the trend seems to be that people want to see no healing, more monster power, same team. Going to be interesting to see how this turns out!
Cool ..you already noticed you calculated the monsters wrong but you forgot the bonus tiles too those are real fun and can be a game changer the defending team can get one first and 2 automatic defense for example can save a monster.
Ash, do you have a place on your discord to share links? I've compiled a full list of monsters and notables from all current campaigns for people to reference for their tournament arena battles. I don't want to post it if it is not permitted, but I do want to share with the community. Maybe save some folks from making their own.
What is the point of this arena game? I don't own the expansion so maybe I am missing something. It just looks like something that small kids would play around with.
I have always houseruled that my dwarves start with the hand axe, not the shortsword.
Gorgeous looking game and excellent game play. Thank you for sharing and the great representation with spot on music ☕

Round 2: those heroes vs the Frozen Horror. 😂
Great idea! I'd love to see these homebrew rules in a pdf someday!
😆 you might even find them in an official quest pack!
@AshQuest wait, this IS official HQ content??? 😄
I'm an original HQ player and GM so I haven't kept up with all the new stuff lol
Ahhh gotcha! I saw that comment going either direction so apologies lol! Yes this is official stuff and I love it!

Nice to see how the Arena mode is played. Can`t wait to get mine, but I have to wait appox. two more week till I get mine.
arena battles with ash... good stuff
I am so throwing Gargoyle and the Frozen Horror in that arena with the Ogres!

That Cleric is a must have - still need to make time to order mine!
Thanks for the kind words and I hope the pvp is a blast for all!
It's really great to see how this new mode of play works thank you, ash
I've yet to get my copy of the expansion, but I hope there's versions of the area with clutter like pillars etc.
could probably add that in yourself.

I'm so disappointed that I missed that detail! 😞
Yes it’s not stated but I believe it’s because of the white shield defenses.
Definitely more arena battles please!
More to come! The slaughter...I mean laughter commences!
@@AshQuest Yeeeesssssss!
Just got my copy of AtOH today (yay, canada :/), excited to dig into this content :)
Thats awesome! And worth the wait, i honestly think!

We dare, we dare! Thanks for the thoughtful comment and suggestion!
for sure we need a round 2, no heal
Defender side mixed with melee n ranged, or with a sleep/utility caster
No Heal wins by a landslide currently!
Its a fun system and im happy they added it. :)

The heroes add insult to injury
They'll get theirs >=]
Why no trophies put out?
is the Quest book available on line yet? ty

I didn't forget the bonus tiles, I just didn't add them in this game 😆
@@AshQuest ok 😄 sorry i just noticed myself how much difference they make. Thinking of a system to spread those tiles randomly

Absolutely. I'm going to make an arena channel and we can pin the links there :]
@@AshQuest Awesome! I'll keep an eye out for it.
Hardly seemed fair. What about an Orc and three Goblins, for round two. No heal for the Heroes. 😮
I'll keep creeping the defense power up! No heals >=]
Yip scale up slightly

Is it just me who finds it very weird / not enjoyable to play hero quest with unpainted miniatures ?
I prefer the base color scheme. It's nostalgic.
