The rules were that there were no refs pr judges so he would get away with cross checking and high sticking and boarding in one sequence- it's not a competition in that sense it's a gathering

It's not as simple as you think. They are between friends and they know hitting the limbs is incredibly painful, while hitting the head, especially with a circular move, is almost harmless with the protection, but at the same time has the advantage of showing everyone you would've won the fight if there wasn't protection. It has a good ratio of hurtfulness to efficiency in real life, while hitting the limbs is extremely painful and dangerous everytime but doesn't make you win a fight instantly.
I totally disagree, and feel that you have probably never been in a full contact stick spar without the draped armor that many FMA schools use for sparing. Your body mechanics change quite a bit once you've been whacked by a stick at full speed. The footwork is there, the tactics are there, the attitude is there. That's all that matters.

Snowflake Those are close quarter drills. They are a training method and not to be relied on in actual fights because no one cooperates with you in a conflict
*Snowflake,* just like a street fight. Don't expect refined movement from Arnis/Kali/Eskrima that's main purpose was to hurt back in the day. This is not a movie. You hit and keep hitting if the situation allows you to.
