I wish I had the power to transport every young person back to 1977 and experience this in a packed theater (after waiting for hours in a line that wraps around the block) and experience the pure spontaneous joy and group excitement. Everyone gasped and cheered and laughed and roared with applause at the end. It was a transformative moment.
I was ten years old when I had this experience and it changed me so deeply, I couldn’t even express what I had experienced afterward.

I saw Jedi when they re-released it in ‘85 here in Toronto. I was 5 so it was my only theatrical experience of SW, after seeing the first two on early VHS. I don’t remember the crowd reaction, but it was a life changing experience. Along with Explorers and Back to the Future that year, too!

One thing to remember is when this came out, it was just Star Wars. Not "A New Hope". No Episodes. Just Star Wars. Nothing like it had been done before really. There was absolutely no guarantee that this one would be a success let alone sequels so it was pretty much a self contained story.

Here is a interesting factoid The in-universe origins of the nickname Ben has an interesting story behind it. Back in Obi-wan's younger days, he was order to protect a women named Satine Kryze who's recently became the leader of the Mandalorians and they spent significant time together and became extremely “close” and Ben was her nickname for him. He would use it as a code name during the Clone Wars too.

And if you remember, there was no immediate announcement that there would (or should be) another movie. Like Natascha said, it kind of felt like this story had been told- what else was there? We didn't know about Lucas's larger vision. Sequels were not an automatic thing back then. I can only think of the Planet of the Apes series, the 2 Godfather movies, and I guess you can include the James Bond movies as having "follow ups".

In 1983 I was married and had 2 children. One was 4 and I sewed him a Luke Skywalker outfit. I made myself Princess Leia, and because he had a beard I had my husband as Obi-One. There were no patterns for it so I took similar ones and did it that way. For the cloak of OBI I took an army blanket which was gruff enough looking to be a material the could be used tor that. I got a dress pattern with open sleeves like an angel design and put cuffs around the wrist. We went to what was called a Sci-Fi convention. That was before the Comic Books took it over. I went to those back in the 70's before Star Wars had even come out. We stood in line at the Graumans Chinese Theater opening day. May 25th 1977. We were in line for about 4 hours and it was so worth it. See the special effects that were in the first film had never been seen before because Lucas did all his own out of his creative mind. What you said looked cheesy had never been accomplished. A good portion of the creatures were CGI in 1990 when it was redone by him.

The movie house was playing it in 3 different screens and it was still hours to get in. There was such a demand for anything Star Wars. On a lighter note the Star Wars Holiday Special was so bad. ( how bad was it). Carrie Fisher played it get of people from her home after a party. And the house would clear out.

That isn't a model car with a doll,
"Landspeeders first appear in Star Wars. Two of them-Luke Skywalker's (Mark Hamill) X-34 and a V-35-were designed by noted special effects artist John Stears and were fitted around cars. Skywalker's landspeeder was designed and built by Ogle Design around the chassis of a Bond Bug three-wheeler car.[1][2][3] One of the major challenges the production crew faced was disguising the wheels to create the illusion that the craft was hovering.[4][5] For certain shots, they shot from camera angles that masked the wheels; for long-distance shots, they used reflective material, gelatin on the camera lens, and shadow effects. A small blur could be seen under the speeder, which George Lucas called "The Force Spot" (stated in Special Edition Tape).[4] Production designer Roger Christian used an angled mirror and a broom attached to the vehicle's underside to create, at certain angles, the illusion that the craft was hovering and kicking up dust.[3] Star Wars creator George Lucas used digital technology to enhance the landspeeder effects in the Special Edition of A New Hope.[

For some medium close-up shots they mounted a full-size mockup of the landspeeder on a rotating arm so it could go 'round and 'round like a merry-go-round while being held up off the ground. This allowed it to rotate into frame, seemingly floating in midair, with the actors sitting in the seats, and with the supporting arm hidden behind the vehicle.

      @Lethgar_Smith 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The shot she reacted to looked fake to her, I think, because it was shot from a long distance with a telephoto lens and that makes the image very grainy and there is a slight heat mirage in the lower portion of the frame. This shot was not cleaned up or enhanced in anyway and, in comparison to the footage that comes before and after, it looks out of place.

Fun fact: Peter Cushing, who played Tarkin, had very large feet and unfortunately the costume department got him boots that were too small! So, after shooting a couple scenes with agonizing feet, he went to George Lucas and explained the problem and George agreed that all the rest of his scenes would be shot from the waist up. Thus, Peter Cushing, Grand Moff Tarkin, commanded the Death Star wearing carpet slippers! 😂😂😂

_A long time ago, in a movie theater about 50 miles away ..._
    *THERE WAS NO EPISODE TITLE*
The studio didn't think this film would make much money. Lucas was crossing his fingers that it didn't bomb. For all he knew, Lucas was making one standalone movie. "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added in later releases, to be in line with the numbering adopted with Episode V.
I first saw _Star Wars_ in 1977, at the Indian Hills Theater in Omaha, Nebraska, US (pop. 1M). The Indian Hills was one of the last remaining Cinerama theaters in existence (it's long gone, now).
Cinerama was an experimental widescreen format seen in the 1950s and 1960s. It had an extremely curved screen, such that films shot in Cinerama used _three cameras_ and _three projectors_ : one for the center of the screen and one for each side. Everything had to be constantly synchronized so that the film looked normal onscreen.
If you see Cinerama films on DVD/Bluray/streaming today, it often looks distorted on the left and right. This is caused by converting a curved film to a flat screen.
So there I was at the Indian Hills at the tender age of 12 -- the film's precise target demographic. The Indian Hills seated 810 patrons: 662 on the main floor and 148 in the balcony. It was completely packed, as was every screening of _Star Wars_ until the film left theaters
I'd gotten to the theater rather late, forcing me to sit in the center seat of row one.
This turned out to be fantastically good bad luck.
Today, the center of row one is a terrible seat due to parallax distortion. In a theater the size of the Indian Hills, that distortion didn't exist because the screen was far enough away from the seats. However, it was close enough so that it filled my field of view from top to bottom.
The screen was large and curved enough so that it filled my field of view from periphery to periphery.
_Star Wars_ was shot in CinemaScope, a more popular experimental widescreen format of the era. While not technically the same as Cinerama, it still lent itself well to that screen.
I watched _Star Wars_ with the film filling my entire field of view from top-to-bottom and side-to-side. I didn't have to turn my head to watch it unless I wanted to, and I usually didn't.
It was an astonishingly immersive experience. Not even IMAX comes close.
Add to that the massive audience reaction that shouldn't be overlooked. It was a shared experience that I've only seen at _Infinity War_ and _Endgame_ on their opening nights, when there were a lot of fans present.
This audience reaction happened at every screening, in every theater, everywhere in the world, until _Star Wars_ left the screens.
Imagine 810 people all cheering, clapping, jumping to their feet, and occasionally crying all at once. The shared experience was amazing, as it fed on itself. No one held back, it just kept growing and growing until the destruction of the Death Star -- which prompted massive roaring from the audience.
The film itself was like nothing put to the screen at that time. While cinematically based on old _Flash Gordon_ and _Buck Rogers_ movie serials of the 1930s, this was a big-budget, big-screen version like nothing anyone had ever seen before.
It completely changed science fiction on the movie screen. Until that time, you occasionally got a good science fiction film, but they tended to be years apart. After _Star Wars_ , there were multiple good science fiction movies every year, a trend that continues to this very day.
There would be no modern _Star Trek_ without _Star Wars_ . _Star Wars_ was such a massive hit for 20th Century-Fox that Paramount quickly looked around and said, "Aha! We have this _Star Trek_ thing that Trekkies are always saying they want more of. Let's make it into a movie!"
Thus _Star Trek - The Motion Picture_ was released in 1979. Without that, there would be no _Star Trek_ today.
_Star Wars_ changed filmmaking from a business perspective. The film grabbed audiences like nothing seen in the entire history of cinema. While _Jaws_ was technically the first summer blockbuster, _Star Wars_ cemented summer as the time to release action-heavy, family-friendly films.
The special effects of _Star Wars_ were utterly innovative, and the tools created by the likes of John Dykstra became commonplace in films that don't even have special effects.
Almost all special effects in the Original Trilogy were achieved either in-camera, with optical effects, miniatures, extremely detailed paintings, or a combination of those techniques. CGI that allows an entire film to be shot on a green screen wasn't even a glimmer in anyone's eye.
In 1977, the most advanced computers were the size of an SUV and didn't have the computing power of your phone. CGI as a primary filmmaking technique wasn't popularized until _Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow_ in 2004. By then, computing power/square centimeter had skyrocketed exponentially.
The special effects spawned Industrial Light and Magic, a company created and owned by George Lucas. ILM is still in existence today, constantly innovating with new technologies to create visual effects for many, many films and TV series. From it's inception, ILM has been considered the gold standard of VFX companies.
In short, this film was nothing like what had come before. It changed _everything about cinema_ .
And I got to see it with an audience of 810, on a screen so immersive that I got nauseous during the Trench Run.

re: Star Trek, I used to think that as well, but actually, they were already planning to make a Star Trek movie long before Star Wars came out. There is a tv talk show episode from Feb 1976 with a couple of the ST cast and Jimmy Doohan mentions that they're going to be doing a movie, and that he expected that there was going to be a series of them. So, Star Wars' impact only related to the direction they went with the movie, its budget, things like that.

Originally you could see yellowish blurriness under the speeder from them using Vaseline smudged, between the speeder and the ground, on the film to make it appear as if it was floating and not riding along on regular tires. At around 18:28 you say "that is giving me a little toy on fishing line vibe". I nearly fell off my seat laughing. When I was in 6th grade in the 70s, my 6th grades religious study class decided to do a more god-driven version of Star Wars movie as our final project. We filmed it on Super8 film, which meant we only had one take for each scene and had to film sequentially. I, an amateur model maker, built a very nice replica of Luke's Landspeeder. It was decided to use it as our main spacecraft. It had fishing line attached to the front (still connected to a fishing pole) and two fishing lines attached to the back to stabilize. The front fishing line was run thru the pull on a kitchen cabinet for angle.
As we filmed the scene, and the narration said the spaceship was being pulled gently toward the Death Star (again made by me, but this time a paper mache balloon painted Grey with Sharpie designs drawn on it), the cabinet drawer was pulled open and spaceship dropped out of frame. Someone offscreen panicked and slammed the door shut. The ship then flew up and out of the scene and then bounced up and down on the rest of the way to the Death Star.
When we showed this to our church, this scene got uproarious laughter and my uncle fell off his chair in the choir.
It was not what we were shooting for, but I remain proud of it to this day.

10:30 -- RE: So 3PO can understand the Beep Boop Beeps?! Can anyone else...?; A: Short answer, Yes, there is a small minority of people who can understand the language R2 is using, sometimes because they have him plugged into a screen of some kind but not always. The tones and more importantly the inflections act in exactly the same manner as body language.
Again, "3 Villains of the Hidden Fortress" is surprisingly the best reference for R2's "voice" inflections. When it sounds like a scream or an excited yell, it's because Lucas is using the performance of a Japanese actor as the template for how it should sound and make the people around R2 feel.

Machete order makes perfect sense and is better than release order or chronological order.
Rogue one leads straight to 4, and you learn to fear Vader much more greatly.
4, introduces everything at a slow pace, eases you into the universe.
1, who was Luke's father? What were the Jedi like before they died?
2, what were the Clone Wars? Some cross-trilogy references start to happen.
(Optional clone wars movie & essential episodes, except mortis arc - sows seeds for later adventures & enriches prequel era. Even clone wars finale is ok at this point - seeing it from Ahsokas point of view doesnt exactly spoil anything.)
(Optional SOLO - brings us back to the Empire Era, primes us for Han, Chewie & Lando relationship)
5 - after seeing Anakin in prequels, the ending here is MUCH more shocking
3 - and this is MUCH more emotional - plus you see the clone wars finale from Anakin/Obiwans/Yodas perspective
(Optional Bad Batch - if you have fallen in love with the clones then you'll like this. You can see how they deal with the birth of the Empire.)
(Optional OBI-WAN series - reminds us of the brutality of the Empire, the state of the Jedi after Vader destroys them, and of course, the ending is a real emotional ride)
6 - all the loose ends are tied up. Everything is much heavier with history and is emotionally exponentially more satisfying, especially the last half hour.
You can save Rebels for after 6, then you're set for Mando, Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Andor, all in their season release order.

That is because the knee-high boots that he was given to wear were too small and cramped up his feet something terrible. Rogue One, the movie you were thinking of with Jyn Erso, ends right before this one picks up in the Star Wars timeline.
Keep in mind that the Empire still exists even though Luke destroyed the Death Star. The reason this movie ended like this is because George Lucas didn’t know if it would be successful enough to create sequels. So he made this one so that it could stand alone.

Crazy thing about the landspeeder shots you thought used strings and puppets - those were "real." The speeder was built on a car with mirrors over the bottom to make it look like it was floating. So the floating off the ground (the thing you accepted) was simple in-camera illusion, and the rest was actually real! This movie pushed special effects forward immeasurably, and one of the things they learned over time was that being real and "looking realistic" are oddly different things.

      Fascinating.
Referring to other fans as "toxic" is hardly the way to "bring fans together."
In fact, the technical term for that is "demonization." And yes, that is EXACTLY what I see in the above posts.
It's unfortunate to start off well... simply saying "I like this and it's nice to see someone else who likes it too."
But the instant that you start attacking those who disagree with you... and calling people with whom you disagree "toxic" is an act of AGGRESSION, not one of defense... and a sleazy one at that... you've ceded all right to the "moral high ground."
I tend to agree with the poster directly above my post, who thinks these comments seem almost like those now proven to have come from Kathleen Kennedy's PR agency... which have been even more egregious than those openly coming out of the Disney PR department (which at least has to try to maintain an appearance of propriety).
I personally appreciate "Rogue One," and the first two seasons of "The Mandalorian," while it was being made by Jon Favreau. I personally despise everything else which has come out of the Disney period.
To you, that makes me "toxic." I couldn't care less. To me, Star Wars includes everything pre-Disney, including my collection of books, comics, games, etc. It only includes anything from Disney when and where that does not contradict any of that.
Luke married Mara Jade, a former "secret agent" who reported directly to Palpatine. They had a son, Ben Skywalker. Han and Leia married as well, and had three children... the twins, Jacen and Jayna Solo, and a son, Anakin Solo. Anakin was killed in a war, after becoming a Jedi. Failing to prevent Anakin's death pushed Jacen into exploring "the unifying force" (combining the dark and light sides), but he inevitably fell to the dark side, and among other things he did, he murdered Mara Jade Skywalker.
Han and Leia never split up. There was never a "first order," and Palpatine did return, briefly, by transferring his consciousness into a series of clone bodies, none of which could last... and he was finally totally destroyed by the pregnant Leia, and the son inside of her, Anakin.
Leia became chief of state of the New Republic. The conflict permanently ended with the truce at Bakura, and the "Imperial Remnant" eventually became a solid ally of the New Republic. There was never a "First Order."
And so on and so on.
I reject everything in Disney which contradicts any of the formerly canonical "Expanded Universe," which Disney "erased" when they bought George out.
The only exception is that I can accept the Rogue One story about the Death Star Plans, and can allow that the guy who previously was the one to obtain them, Kyle Katarn, might've not been involved in that specific mission after all. (Though as far as I'm concerned, he might've gotten the revised plans for its successor.)
Disney canon just isn't very good... but if you only know the six theatrical films prior to it, you might not feel as strongly. You wouldn't have as much to compare it to... and likely, you never really cared about SW prior to seeing the new Disney stories, anyway.
The bad dialogue, bad plotting, "Mary Sue" lead character with absolutely no "hero's journey" whatsoever, "Darth Whiney" as the main villain, horrific treatment of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, the purple-haired "girl-boss" whose refusal to brief her subordinates succeeded in killing thousands of (off screen) lives... "Rose" stopping a heroic act by one of the only decent characters so she could kiss him... plus how awfully "The Mandalorian" was destroyed once Favreau was demoted by Kennedy...
... Well, there's plenty of reason to despise the material. And those who made it.
But there is still no reason to attack those who like it. We can disagree without demonization.
That has to go both ways, though.

    1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part.
    2. The shrug Chewy gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is
    3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted.
    4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to.
    5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub, the scene with Jabba the Hutt and some very miner changes. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977.
    6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over.
    7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked.
    8. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy

The term “blockbuster”? Yea, we busted the blocks around the theater. Saw this one 20+ times in the theater from ‘77-‘78, up until they ripped it out of the projectors. I then saw it more during the re-release just before ESB. It’s hard to describe just how much Star Wars was EVERYWHERE then, it was THE culture of the time and it changed the way movies were made. When I say everywhere, it’s like literally all over. Every restaurant had merch, licensed and not, TV shows had skits about it, talk shows, well, talked about it, and we played Star Wars all day.
Still have all my toys from them, they have their shrine in my cave.

Do we need too?!,,,,,,,,,,, Oh I love your banter..... Its so refreshing. Welcome to The Children Of Star Wars. OH and I would never have noticed your dress until you mentioned it. Not to worry, I would be fine even if you presented "that" type of show. 😉 I remember when I met the actor who was in the Darth Vader outfit,,,,He was really cool. I was so sad when he died. He was really nice to me and my family.

The landspeeder was a full sized vehicle
Mirrors were placed at the bottom to he the wheels and make it look like it floated. They even put Vaseline on the bottom of the camera lense to hide it a bit, that's why the shots of it driving are from a distance. Closet shots are shot from a bit above to not show the bottom of the speeder.

Your comment, when they were in the trash chamber. about Leia not diving into to help Luke in the dirty water,....to protect her "dress". Well, Carrie Fisher did admit that she was not allowed to wear a bra during this film. It was the 70's....yet an earth-style Bra under her gown, would have been visible, too obvious,...and George Lucas made that rule. Carrie F' revealed this in an interview in 1980 for Rolling Stone magazine. She wore 'gaffer's tape' over her nipples. (I was a teen then, Carrie F' was my first Celeb' crush)....so her dress getting wet, would have been obvious. Carrie F' advised other actress's in modern Star Wars to assert themselves, if they felt design for their costume was not reasonable.
