- It's the Holly Jolly Joyful Trails Christmas Special! Let's check out the Thermal Belt Rail Trail in winter. And while we're there, Forest City is quite the spectacle, with a MILLION twinkling Christmas lights! It looks just like the set of a Hallmark Christmas movie. Spindale and Ruth also decorate this classic rail trail for the holidays, making for a festive ride after dark. Grab a candy cane and some mistletoe, and let's hit the trail in North Carolina!
Check out our previous visit to the Thermal Belt Rail Trail HERE... • Biking the Thermal Bel...
I'm Scott. I explore, review and rate bike trails on this channel...and hopefully find a little joy in the journey. Thanks for watching!

I love your videos! Merry Christmas!!!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you also!
Our gift to you is this comment and a big thumbs up. Merry Christmas!
Ha! Thanks! Same to you guys…
Merry Christmas 🎄
Right back at you!
I watched them putting up the decorations on the trail as I rode it several weeks ago. I wondered what it would be like to ride it at night but I’m not able to drive much at night so I appreciate you sharing the trail for me to enjoy the Christmas decorations. As usual you did a great job. The Thermal Belt Rail Trail is one of my favorites due to it not being so crowded. Thanks
You're welcome! I was cold and it was dark...but I felt like I'd end up with a good video, so it was worth it! ha ha. Yes, I really like the Thermal belt trail as well. It's a good one.
TBRT is one of our favorites, too! We combine it with the Purple Martin when we are on our ebikes.
Forest City is a beautiful town with lots of things to do, and great restaurants. We owned a log cabin there for 10 years. We sold it last year, and really miss being so close to all the wonderful things Forest City has to offer.
We live in Concord and frequently bike the Mallard Creek greenway near UNC-CHARLOTTE.
I’ve been to Concord before, but never have ridden a bike there. I’ll have to check it out sometime…
Well done Scott!! Merry Christmas🎄🌲🤗

...and to you and yours!
Happy Holidays Scott!
Terrific video; we hope to get there next week and enjoy the trail and of course the lights and decorations. Keep up the great work; we love your videos!!!
Awesome. It's a great little Christmas town (and trail)! Thanks for the kind words.
Just did the trail today; great!
Had wonderful dinner at the Copper Penny and then enjoyed the lights!
Thanks for your inspiration!
Happy New Year’s 🎉
Great job Scott. I did some night riding up closer to where I am at to film the lights. When I did the editing, I’m pretty disappointed in the settings I used on the camera. But of course it’s pouring down rain all day today, so I’m not going back tonight to try again. Lol like I say great job.
Thanks! Was it on a GoPro? I've had trouble with my GoPro in low light situations. The iPhone does really well...but sometimes you get those extra light refractions that you don't want. It's trial and error!
@@joyfultrails it was indeed on the GoPro. I dropped it to 30 frames per second to let in more light but still do not like the way that it worked. Most evenings this week are calling for bad weather so I'm going to go with what I have. Next time I will know better.
I keep saying over and over that I'm going to ride this at night during Christmas. Maybe this year. Lords willing. But I did ride it during the daytime.
@1:23 - Don't forget Alexander Mills and Sandy Mush.
It’s a great experience at Christmastime!
Another winning and heartfelt vlog that made me merry and bright even in the freezing cold temps of Wisconsin. Happy holidays and merry Christmas Scott.❄☃️❄
Thanks! Funny, I’ve been watching some videos lately from other cycling TH-camrs riding in - wait for it - Wisconsin. Maybe I’ll get up there one day…
@@joyfultrails we used to think our trail system was beyond reproach and then we retired and started traveling with our bikes. I may be dating myself but my current favorite state for their trsil system is Florida
Love Forest City & Their Display.. In Rutherfordton City.. The Carrier House Inn has a Fantastic Display.. a Must See.. I was in Florida for a week saw little Christmas Spirit.. But In Winter Garden, FL their Christmas Display reminded me of a Hallmark Movie.. If you have a chance check it out..
Merry Christmas 🌲🌟
Yes, I rode by that carrier house inn and it looked amazing. By that time I was just cold and tired and ready to stop videotaping! But yes, Rutherfordton looked amazing as well.

Merry Christmas Scott 🎄💫
We’ve stayed many times.. Great Owners.. We actually watched the Rutherfordton Christmas Parade from their front porch.. what a fantastic memory 🙂
I have really been enjoying your videos What do you use to video with. I am interested in doing this while riding my bike. I am going to ride the trails you did in Columbia SC
Thanks! I use an iPhone 14 (usually in cinematic mode) for a lot of the off-bike stuff. Most of the bike footage is accomplished with an Insta 360 X3 camera. If you’re not used to doing much video editing, there will be a little bit of a learning curve when it comes to editing the 360 footage. But overall it’s not too complicated. I also use a GoPro Hero 9 for some pass-by shots and shots where I’m holding the camera on the bicycle every now and then. Have fun on the trails around Columbia! They’re great.
