Which pen would you recommend for ball point pen shading?

I will always recommend BIC pen, Schneider pen. But it depends on personal preference, try out different kinds of pen and see which one works best for you.🙂

When hatching the line is it a to and fro movement of the hand or your going up make a hatching strike and return back without a hatching strike and strike again.

It's not a to and fro movement.
It's simply starting from a point and swiping a stroke to another point.
Multiple swiping of strokes gives hatching
