Installing top winter insulation

  • Winter is almost here. We've gotten -5C now for a couple of mornings. I used this cool late fall day to add my top insulation. Bees were clustered so it was a quick job. Looks like I have 4 colonies heading into winter. One did not look big enough.
Too much volume in most of these colonies to my liking. But too busy at the moment and the weather window has past to do much more.
All I have left to do is protect my entrances against mice and hopefully setup a couple more CO2 sensors.

I wintered similar to your setup last year filling a honey super with Styrofoam insulation and only a bottom entrance. In the spring my wood bottom boards and outer wood frames had a lot of black moisture mold/mildew. It did not appear to bother the bees but wondering if i should do some sort of moisture control along with my 30r-40r upper insulation? Location is western SD

Do you use anything like a candy board over winter?
