    I don't understand why you measure the distance between the two ranging poles like that. Shouldn't the measured distance be horizontal to the sea level? Please explain. My teacher hasn't been much help explaining the concept to me.

      The poles are placed at the impacted and unimpacted thresholds. This has implications for granular metrics and compacted-ness. Between the poles is the disturbance ecotone. You might, per se, encounter crustose invertebrates of both halophyle (the impacted zone) and terrestrial types (the unimpacted zone) in the disturbance ecotone (e.g. sand flees AND beetles). If you're not interested it's one thing but on field work the greatest deeds lie in between humping huge sample caches from here to there and labouring over the samples throughout the custody chain. Do you live near nature?
