Excellent video!!! I have several compasses. While I’ll use my Suunto MC-2 global mirrored version on a 7.5 minute angle USGS to draw and find bearings with the terrain, I still feel that my military Camenga lensatic compass is much easier to shoot an azimuth with AND… it’s more accurate when acquiring a sight target bearing than any other compass I’ve used now for the past 35 years. I’ve hiked the PCT twice and parts of the Great Divide trail in the Rockies. The Camenga is much more durable, precise and faster to attain a correct bearing.
I don't know you may have already done this but maybe you would consider making a video about the map and The Ledger on the map and what everything means I think that would help many people and you obviously know what you're talking about.
Just found you and subscribed immediately. Your compass review was great. I was really hoping to hear more about the Silva 54B (the radioactive one with the sighting lens on the bezel). I just got the 55, (almost identical except for the radiation)and I pretty much expected there to be instructions with it, but there weren't . It seems odd to me that the lens is at right angles to North. Then while playing with it I got the idea that you use the lens strictly to take a bearing: Face your target, take a reading through the lens, then use that number to adjust the compass for direction of travel. Is that right? I'm pretty sure I'm missing something, but you're one of only a couple people I've found TH-cam that even mention this compass. Could you do a video about its use? Or if you've already done one could you tell me the title so I can find it on this channel? Thanks, from Colorado, USA

Basically the 54b is about 4x the price due to the tritium gas luminescence (radioactive) which is supposed to stay illuminated for something like 300yrs.... The sighting prism is excellent for military application allowing you to rapidly get very accurate magnetic bearings to things- this is useful when finding direction or location of targets to direct mortar strikes or other weapon fire onto. For most navigation scenarios though, it doesn't offer much advantage over the much cheaper non prism versions. Hope that helps.
@MonkeyDaddy you have pretty much nailed it with how to use the prism for nav- set the compass bearing in the normal way and follow the compass like you would for any other but to get a fast accurate bearing use the prism to sight something on your bearing. As an example if you were on an easterly bearing (90 degrees/1600mils) you could use the prism to sight a tree, mountain top or other landscape feature that was on your bearing and then walk to that feature and use the prism again to sight the next feature to walk towards, keeping you accurately on your bearing
Great video Thank you for doing this channel. I've never done compass / map reading before, so your guides are very usefull. Only thing I'm worried about is being "Lost" and trying to triangulate where I am. This really worries me. Not sure how to triangulate & hope I can do it right
Thanks for your.kind words. Triangulation can be problematic, it is relatively simple with practice- but it does take practice to become proficient and confident doing it. The real problem however is it doesn't actually work if you are lost, you need to have a reasonable idea of where you are to start with to make it work as you need to be able identify landmarks on your map that you can visually recognise from wherever you are to use to triangulate your position. The best advice I feel I can give without knowing anything about you is to get good at the basics of navigation and be risk averse so that you never put yourself in the position of being lost if possible. Beyond that find a guide on triangulation and practice it until you are confident, in doing so you will gain a lot of navigation skill and also come to understand the limitations of triangulation
@@way-finderfieldskills3387 Thanks. It's all new to me, so what you're saying does make sense. I'm going to get a OS map of my local area, go out to large Parks I know and practice. It's the only was I know I can learn a new skill safely and practice. Also I'll be in a safe/known environment with being outside in the real world too
Hi have a baseplate compass which dial line is not aligned with bazel north line 4 degree offset from north line. Looks like declaration of compass. How to fix this issue
It will depend on the brand and model of your compass. For a Silva compass there should be an adjustment screw on top of the compass dial and an adjustment tool in the lanyard- turn the screw left or right as needed to adjust the declination to what you need. For a Suunto compass the adjustment screw is on the bottom of the compass and the adjustment tool will have come with the compass when you bought it- it should adjust by turning left or right as needed like a Silva. Some other compasses like a Brunton compass have a different mechanism. In any case it is worth searching for a manual from the manufacturer for your particular compass and that should have instructions to adjust the declination setting. Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if a liquid free compass exists like that (though a GPS is a liquid free compass in a way) but a compass that will work worldwide and will last indefinitely is the Suunto mc2 G or Suunto M3 G. You can find them here- www.suunto.com/en-au/Product-search/See-all-compasses/
I have a Suunto MC-2 global and the magnetic needle sticks quite a bit. I’m constantly having to tap the dial until the needle finally comes to rest. Do you know if there is a way to fix this problem apart from chucking it in the bin? So unreliable it’s practically hard to trust this compass so I don’t use it anymore. It’s also out of warranty.
Hi mate, I have one as well and have found the needle to be a bit sticky. Yours sounds worse than mine and I know how frustrating it can be. For me a quick shake and starting to walk seems to fix it, but aside from that I don't know what you can do to fix the issue

But I think your course looked nice, so why not give it a heads up. Guys I'm sitting in Copenhagen Denmark, and this guy can teach you something. I have done course for kids 6-10 if you want some tips, give a heads up.
Here are some other facts about using a compass so fasten your seat belt this will be a rough ride for most people. So bare with me while I explain the FACTS. North and South lines all run straight, but east and west lines are curved, yes its true. All surveyors know this is true. A meridian must always be taken from the North or South but never from east or west. Picture the world not as a ball but as a flat disk and you will begin to understand why this is true. You can walk east or west straight up to around 3 miles after this you will begin to drift heading either northwest or northeast depending on how you started. People in high places in land management know this is true. Now why must a compass have a balanced needle? Well it does matter because the magnetic field is strongest in the north but weak in the south. Picture a huge magnet at the north pole on a flat disk and you will begin to understand. Now for the last fact that will blow your mind. There is no magnetic core at the center of the ball earth. Why not? Iron is none magnetic until it cools down on the surface of the earth. When metal is molten it has no magnetic field at all. If you doubt anything I said is true talk to a Surveyor and if he is honest he will agree with what I have just revealed to you.

For users of American USGS 7.5 minute angle topo maps, you want the compass with the 1: 124,000 scale and NOT the 1: 125,000 scale version.

I have an MC-2 and it's horrible, It sits in a drawer, I wouldn't even carry it as a back up compass.
Yes the baseplate is a little annoying to use but otherwise I find it to be perfectly serviceable
