- Sand Dunes: 'They Protect us, Let's Protect Them'
The real strength of the dunes comes from the plants that bind the sand together. Dune grasses slow the speed of the wind that carries the sand from the beach. In this way the sand is trapped by the plants and builds up into hills and ridges.
In dunes the plant roots have to go very deep and wide to get to water. The extensive root network is excellent at binding the sand together - like iron in reinforced concrete.
Dune and their plants are so special, they create very unique homes for all kinds of rare animals too. Most of our dunes in Ireland are internationally protected Special Areas of Conservation.

The campaign launch of the #ProtectOurDunes, was officially launched on Friday the 25th of June 2021 to coincide with World Sand Dune Day and will run until September 2021; highlights the importance of conserving these vital coastal habitats around the world.
