I worked as an avionics tech for 26 years and I have more than my share of scars on the backs of my hands from cable ties. To eliminate the sharp edge we would use flush cut diagonal cutters and cut the " tail " as short as possible against the locking part of the cable tie leaving next to nothing remaining. This practice helped to eliminate the cuts to our hands and heads at times LOL.
After I finished watching this clip this morning, I went in and fired up my hokey guitar rig. Honestly for the first time since I have owned my Mesa Lonestar Special, I dialed in a lot of gain on the amp as part of my pedalboard and two amp setup. I started watching TPS before I got that amp. And before and since I added the Mesa, I have been running both amps VERY clean. Because that is what you two do and it always sounds so great on the show. So today....EPIPHANY time! HUGE difference in the response of my guitars with all of this gain dialed in on the Lonestar Special. I am running a stereo delay through both amps and a GFI reverb only though the amp that is still dialed in clean. A clean boost, an always-on Lightspeed pedal, several overdrives and a few modulation pedals in there as well. Sounds REALLY good (to me) I have benefitted a lot from watching all of the TPS episodes. Today was a milestone. And Mr McBride is one HELLA player! Cheers from NM, USA
BRILLIANT!!!! Love Simon, boy can play! As a player who uses a dirty amp and a drive pedal plus delay in the loop, this video was totally insightful. Keep up the great work :-)
Woah! The improvised stuff just pouring out of the man, no repetition or cliche. I could listen to that for a considerable length of time. I'll play this again tomorrow to get some more...
Never heard of Simon before today. I sat here like Dan, just dumbfounded by his playing and tone. Amazing player. Great build Daniel as always. Simon has a new fan.
Never heard of Simon McBride before, but I like his playing! He doesn't seem afraid of generous amounts of treble and plays those nice chords with some ringing high notes in them - one of the many things i very much like about mr. Lifeson!
I sincerely enjoy watching videos of you putting together client's pedal boards. I always learn something new or change my way of thinking towards my own board. I would not complain about more of these vids. Keep up the good work!
Great show, you guys are not only educating me on pedals, you’re introducing me to a lot of great artists like Simon. Just got some of his music in iTunes.
You guys ROCK!!! I'm a bonafide guitar geek and I've been wanting to build a modern pedal board. You have inspired me! I got a programmable loop strip and a nice board with a power supply. Now I must get cracking! Thanks so much for your information!! I like to build clone kits and have a mess of pedals so I must choose my board build components wisely. Keep the good work coming!
That will be Absolutely Crazy. Legends - all 3 of you. We love you guys. I can't wait. Make it a two-part . . .4 hour Episode with behind the scene's , bloopers & outtakes. Trust Me. Dan, Mick & Andy = I am Salivating.
Dan needs a wizard hat to wear when he does this. It is nothing short of Sonic Alchemy how he sorts everything out. Love the setup and the sound. The boards just look so clean and pro. Great work as always. The recording in this space is still so great. Having the part in the front room really highlights how clean that studio room sounds.
Knowing how upset and uncomfortable Dan is with hum I did sympathize. His expression was priceless at some moments. I was expecting him to crack on camera and just say let me at it I just can’t abide this and therefore it must be eradicated! Great stuff as always and damn the boy can play. Excellent 👍
Going off the vintage Fender video that I just rewatched for the 100th time, you guys should try and do a vintage guitar with vintage pedal vs. reissue guitar with reissue pedals if you can get your hands on some old gear again.
That’s a nice idea. Just need to remember that there’s sooooo much variance in the old stuff - and new stuff for that matter. But it would be fun anyway!
Great job and awesome tones. At around 38:00 the topic reminded me of a video on the Pedal Zone channel called how to make lofi tape effects : using vibrato You will hate my signal chain. bass pre amp, HOF, vibrato, delay, whammy, bass synth wah, data corrupter, digitech vocalist live harmony, subnup, boost, canyon, ottobit jr, phase shifter, bass big muff deluxe, sonuus wahoo, sonuus voluum, mxr bass compressor, radial tonebone pz-pre
Can't wait for the Pat Flanigan Pedalboard Build episode! Ahhhh one day maybe! I even go further with the velcro. I cover the two vertical sides by cutting a piece lengthwise. Gives you a couple extra centimetres! That way you can place some pedals that have top in/out connectors all the way to the edge of the board.
You know it really comes across in episodes such as this that, aside from both being very knowledge and tasteful players etc, you two are basically two mates having fun (except for that silent episode of course 😜)...!!
You guys!!! Tension & drama as well... thankfully there was the addendum... Wow Simon is a killer player & even though I don’t play with that much gain, it has me questioning my pedal order Always learning!!
I’ve yet to hear an explanation of using 4 cable method, or how to run an effects loop on a switcher like that which doesn’t seem way overly complicated until a few days ago. Treat the amps pre-amp as a pedal. Instantly solved.
Ha ha Ha ;) I was trying to ask a practical question because here they had a significant noise problem requiring a gate pedal and a second ground lift. Some effects loops can be quite sensitive as Dan alluded to I think.
Hello there, In the beginning of the pedalboard Build you mentioned troubles with noise and influential vibrations while using a clip on tuner on stage. My advice: try to palm mute your strings and only let the one string shortly ring you want to tune and than pm again. Helps to increase focus on the strength of that strings frequencies! I had an acoustic combo and I had similar troubles even with the build in tuner of my worthy Martin Acoustic. This trick worked just always....build in and clip on Cheers
On the topic of the clip on tuner issue - I had a hunch this would be the case when Simon was talking about his experience in the beginning of the video. The case is that the Polytune clip on tuner works MUCH better than any other clip on tuner I've tried. It works much better in a noisy setting especially. This is likely the difference between Mic and Simons experiece.
Zach Richard I use a Snark(the little more expensive one) and never have an issue. My buddy has to have no sound, I just don't t have the issue, but I'm using a Strat, and he's using an Acoustic/Electric.
Great video guys (as usual) and thanks again for that. On an unrelated note, I think I've discovered your sinister plan: Every time I come up with an idea for a show request, bits of wisdom from your other videos come back that show me how silly/impossible my request really would be. I'll think, "What about a show on best pedals to start out with?" and I instantly start getting flashbacks of you guys saying "it really depends on the amp and the guitar and the style of the player and the genre of music and whether the sky is blue or gray that day and, and, and" and while I'm doing that one of you starts playing something that sounds absolutely amazing and I lose my entire train of thought. It really is brilliantly sinister on your part to educate and mesmerize your viewers into absolute silence. ;-) It also illustrates how difficult what you're trying to do really is. I appreciate your work.
HEY GUYS! that VENT has the best rotating speaker sounds i have ever heard out of a pedal.and i am a big fan of JAM pedals too i love the retro vibe and i own a JAM pedals fuzz phrase which is a really cool FF style pedal.
Great vid, seen simon a few times both solo and with Snake Charmer. It's funny when you guys listening to Simon play, you watch the pedals like the sound is coming out of them. Funny
I was in the audience to watch Simon play for a PRS demo event in a hotel in Belfast in about 1993....unbelievably good performance. Still rather a fine player isn't he!
Excellent video. Also was happy to see Simon just uses the clip-on tuner. I'd been looking at buying a pedal tuner but have that clip-on tuner already and if it's good enough for him....So this has saved me some £££.
Hah, I'm not the only one that runs Phaser and Chorus before drive. My reason is: I find the chorus/phaser effect too pronounced if I run it together with drive if it's after the drive. Does that make sense?
I like having an Drive and a Fuzz, after my Uni-Vibe, Phaser, and Chorus(if I'm using it). There are two different sounds, both of which I love. Sometimes the solo cuts better with drive first, but not always.
Yep, a general rule of thumb is that the effect last in chain usually has the greatest effect on overall sound. It's not always the case but a modulation after a drive sound will typically be much less subtle. I run my vibe and chorus before any drives but after clean boosts. It seems like running boost>mod>dirt puts a touch more emphasis on the modulation but not so much that it becomes a swirly and cheesy sounding mess.
Great tips about building a pedalboard. I've never seen a power distribution system like the modular Gig Rig. It works so well for pro boards, though it might be a bit pricey compared to a 'normal' isolating power supply for the weekend warrior, once you add up all the individual modules.
I don't get Keeley pedals. I've tried a few and the only one I absolutely love is the Keeley Katana. I have one as a seperate pedal and one in the Keeley workstation. If there is one pedal I wouldn't want to miss at all, it's that one. Best (clean) boost pedal ever imo. It doesn't color the sound in any way, it adds a small bit of compression. It's a pedal that's always on for me.
Brilliant! Loved it! Mr McB is awesome anyway but the whole show - specially with the hot amp - was fab. As a "it-sounds-best-when-the-smoke-starts" person, I'd love to see more about that way of life! :-) Please? :-) ...
Take a photo! Of course! Like a Dummkopf, I've been drawing out my chain with little squares for the pedals and arrows/lines for the path & wiring. TPS, saving Guitarists time and hassle, one schwang at a time. Not quite sure I understood the insert. Send>Input then...what?
4 cable method: cable 1 - from guitar to pedalboard cable 2 - from pedalboard send to front of amp cable 3 - from amp effects loop send to pedalboard return cable 4 - from final pedalboard output to amp effects loop return (basically direct to power amp>speakers)
great board build dan props to you for being a wizard and figuring out the effects loop signal path and such. Can't wait to see that audio kitchen big chopper on TPS. I hear Ed obrien has made a switch from the mesa/vox rigs to an audio kitchen set up.
Hey DJ, Dan here. They are the most amazing amps. We have one for a couple of shows coming up. I had to get it back to Steve today, already my life is feeling empty and devoid of meaning. Well, that might be a bit much, but they are amazing sounding amps
Great episode. I completely identify with Simon's need to have some reverb. There is a whole feeling of interaction with the room and maybe the amp (if using an amp-based spring reverb) that I find it difficult to play without. On my board I have modulations and delay running into a fuzz and drive. I also have a boost/light OD and a fuzz BEFORE them in case I decide for whatever reason I want that sound. It provides a lot of versatility. Anyway, Simon is a fantastic player and seeing the board built from the ground up and going through the chain is really informative. Cheers guys!
That’s a beautiful job Dan. Those solderless cables really saved that whole ideal. I see a lot of the other brands that screw in and they fail. I’mc in a quandary....I have a KOT. My number is coming up for my second. I want a 🌞 🦁...
6:54 Another tip to eliminate those sharp edges is to slightly file the edges with a metal file or fine sand paper; all you need is a little bit for a nice and smooth edge that will not cut or scratch.
Pretty Cool stuff ...I have to say I was a little saddened when you guys did your harmonic trem episode that you didn't have the Keeley DynaTrem as part of the show...or the DynaTrem in general. I've cried about this. A lot. Sweet Episode. Always love the builds,
For breaking up ground loop hum and providing a neat little black box send/return on a pedal board I find the Behringer HD500 to be extremely useful. Or an Ebtech Hum Eliminator (especially if I want to use XLRs). Passive transformer isolation really works and a little iron coloration never hurts. Especially if any digital pedals are involved.
Hey guys! Please do some more Guitars & Gear episodes! Would love to learn more about Micks 335, and maybe a comparison of all his strats? Schwang on!!
You know who you should get on your show is Angus Young. Guys, just call him and 99% sure he'll come. He's a player's player. As for having Simon McBride, this was great! An instant fave..
Oh totally. Was just out for a beer with him last night. He’s got a haidressing business on the side and is stacked with perms and sets for the next six months. After that though maybe.
What happened to thinking big? :D Don't you know Slash is watching this show? Look at all these guitarists waiting to get on your show? Rick Graham Anthony Stauffer Chris Buck Paul Gilbert Chris Brooks Marko Karhu Eric Gales Jesse Davey Greg Koch Josh Smith (done) Joey Landreth (done) Guthrie Govan (semi-done) Dimebag (if he was here) Frank Gambale Oz Noy Philip Sayce Kenny W. Shepard Jeff Kollman Kiko Loureiro Joe Satriani Steve Vai Marty Friedman Scott Henderson John Scofield Thomas McLaughlin Angus Young Saul Hudson
He does use one single pedal that is on all the time, but it would be great to hear him talk about all his experiences. This is not only a pedal show anymore and I love that!
Did you use the Evidence audio stuff? The SIS-plugs? If so, it would be a big suprize, since those seem to be bomb-proof. Never had any problems with those, because the concept is so different from, let's say George L's etc.
I spend so much time trying to figure out what some of the stuff is on that back wall. The problem becomes that I notice things like the Victory Sheriff pre-amp/pedal (behind Simon) and now I can't get my mind off it. I can't wait for those to become available, or for you guys to demo them.
Yep. Just finished shooting the videos for Victory. Mick here (part of what I do outside of TPS as a job). Clearly any opinion here would be a gross conflict of interests, but we’ll have them on the show and Dan can draw conclusions. Saying nothing. :0)
Man, he is such a brilliant player. I don't know how I haven't discovered him until now. Exceptional phrasing, tone and timing.
6378th.... Luv you guys...
Tug Factor
Anderton's Music, i love your channel too! You guys rock!

Excellent! The gain channel in the Lone Star is a marvellous thing. We’re glad this video helped inspire you - thanks for watching!
BRILLIANT!!!! Love Simon, boy can play!
As a player who uses a dirty amp and a drive pedal plus delay in the loop, this video was totally insightful. Keep up the great work :-)
I could listen to Simon play all day. So smooth and tasteful.
YES...Love pedalboard builds
Simply one of the best overall tone lessons I've seen on the channel. Thanks guys!
WOW, I could listen to Simon play all day...awesome!!!!
Great video,Simon is such a good player he deserves so much more recognition.
he is!! he's blowing everyone's minds as deep purples new guitarist 🤯
I love Build episodes! It's like the New Yankee Workshop for guitar.
Eric Burkholder bizarrely I wondered today what has happened to Norm Abraham.
Woah! The improvised stuff just pouring out of the man, no repetition or cliche.
I could listen to that for a considerable length of time.
I'll play this again tomorrow to get some more...
Great episode! Board build, pedal review and artist interview. Great time watching.☺
The Dynatrem is one of the most underappreciated pedals going in my opinion. In fact, all the Keeley "Dyna-" range is - such a brilliant idea.
Glorious tones, especially at the end! And that guitar is gorgeous.
Never heard of Simon before today. I sat here like Dan, just dumbfounded by his playing and tone. Amazing player. Great build Daniel as always. Simon has a new fan.

neither did I when I heard deep purple hired a new gunslinger 😁
Not sure how i was not aware of the Quartermaster system before this, after watching your channel for years now. Bought instantly.
Ah, cheers Ryan, that’s awesome :)
Yeah, they are really good I'm considering the Quartermaster-4 just for my wet effects. It has one very cool "secret" feature. :) Flip-flop!
I covet a quartermaster, but the GigRig Modular Power System is higher on my priority list.
The power system is amazing. Anyone wanna buy my voodoo labs stuff?
I sincerely enjoy watching videos of you putting together client's pedal boards. I always learn something new or change my way of thinking towards my own board. I would not complain about more of these vids. Keep up the good work!
His tone and chops are off the charts...
Great show, you guys are not only educating me on pedals, you’re introducing me to a lot of great artists like Simon. Just got some of his music in iTunes.
That tone came to life rather wonderfully by the end , cheers chaps, hopefully Simon will be playing nearer the SW sometime soon.....
Oh that addendum was great. Always worth watching to the very end!
Moo!
Pedalboards builds!!! Amazing!! Thank you for the video guys!!
Really dig the pedalboard building episodes! More! More!
I’m so excited about this video. 🤘🏻😍😍😍😍
I'm 100% stealing the insert idea for the side of my Temple Board. Thanks for the idea Dan!
Good luck Steve, thanks for the kind words!
Geez, what a monster player! Great show as usual guys, thanks again.
You guys need to invite Andy Martin ( of course from pro guitar shop and reverb) on the show!!!
So many things we need to do. But yes, that’s happening in September. :0)
That Pedal Show 😱 yay!!!
Love the episode btw
Also Shnobel (believe his name's Roman?) he's done more pedal reviews than almost anyone.
That will be one cool show guys. His finger style is awesome
"The Wizard of Schwangri-La"
We need him to wear that on a T-Shirt with his Wizard hat on as he does these builds.
Knowing how upset and uncomfortable Dan is with hum I did sympathize. His expression was priceless at some moments. I was expecting him to crack on camera and just say let me at it I just can’t abide this and therefore it must be eradicated!
Great stuff as always and damn the boy can play. Excellent 👍
I was hoping he would do that. Because that’s what I was thinking!
Simon looks like a blast in parties!
Cant tell u how much i love these pedalboard build videos!! I also keep my phaser and univibe, wah, filter stuff before overdrives! Cheers!
These are the best product promo videos on the net! 🤣 all the gigrig stuff is awesome! I've learned so much from your show! Keep it up! 👍🏻
Vahlbruch rules!!!! Don't ever forget that..... Greets from good ol' germany🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
Great job and awesome tones.
At around 38:00 the topic reminded me of a video on the Pedal Zone channel called how to make lofi tape effects : using vibrato
You will hate my signal chain.
bass pre amp, HOF, vibrato, delay, whammy, bass synth wah, data corrupter, digitech vocalist live harmony, subnup, boost, canyon, ottobit jr, phase shifter, bass big muff deluxe, sonuus wahoo, sonuus voluum, mxr bass compressor, radial tonebone pz-pre
My inner geek has been quite sated from this vid!Love you guys!
Always have at least 1 NS-2 on a board, and the way you hooked it up here was optimal, lovely!
Bravo! Everything about this is informative, nerdy, and tonaly satisfying....SHWANGGG
That Sinvertek pedal is no joke. Picked one up a few months ago and I can't turn it off. I WON'T! Hahaha.
You know it really comes across in episodes such as this that, aside from both being very knowledge and tasteful players etc, you two are basically two mates having fun (except for that silent episode of course 😜)...!!
You guys!!! Tension & drama as well... thankfully there was the addendum... Wow Simon is a killer player & even though I don’t play with that much gain, it has me questioning my pedal order
Always learning!!
Super tasty playing and humble guy. Thanks guys
I bloody love Cornwall. Mick here. Even before Cap’n Ross.
I’ve yet to hear an explanation of using 4 cable method, or how to run an effects loop on a switcher like that which doesn’t seem way overly complicated until a few days ago.
Treat the amps pre-amp as a pedal.
Instantly solved.
Hooray!
Could you have used two Quartermasters a 6 plus a 2 for the loop or would that have given grounding issues?
And then there's always one guy who takes that as a challenge to overcompicate things....GAVIN!
JK mate. There are no bad questions, after all.
Ha ha Ha ;) I was trying to ask a practical question because here they had a significant noise problem requiring a gate pedal and a second ground lift. Some effects loops can be quite sensitive as Dan alluded to I think.
I suppose an ABY with phase/iso/grnd lift might come in handy with your two-looper idea?
1:01:15, that Octavia with the delay was a beast. wowie! especially that heavy bit.
jj rusy My favorite bit too!
Jawdropping episode guys! Congratulations!
Hello there,
In the beginning of the pedalboard Build you mentioned troubles with noise and influential vibrations while using a clip on tuner on stage.

22:17 - Someone's watching TPS on their phone while filming TPS. Schwangception.
Oh I thought it was just a label maker that played tps samples.
Shawangception. You just made my night lolz
I always enjoy the pedalboard build episodes . Also, those Victory amps are killer!!!
Great video guys (as usual) and thanks again for that. On an unrelated note, I think I've discovered your sinister plan: Every time I come up with an idea for a show request, bits of wisdom from your other videos come back that show me how silly/impossible my request really would be. That is truly awesome James. We’re glad some of it is sinking in! :0)
That ending was wonderful.
That board is art. ART, I say.
so happy to see that big chopper in the background!
Great lesson in Pedalboard building, thanks a lot!
Love the flip clock in the background, on a completely unrelated note.
Habitat. Thank you!
Habitat. Thank you!
pedalboard builds makes for such good content!!
wow!! opening licks sounded f%#@ing amazing!!!
I just love the long videos

Yeah. Try a wah before and after. The drive kind of normalizes the effect

Quarter master my next purchase thank for doing what you do.

Holy Moly...that VCPI episode was almost 2 years ago. Where is the time going?
I LOVE his custom 408 PRS. They gotta make that a sig. Hollow with a trem and the toggle switch strat style.
Super cool video! And wow what a player :)
Accents were one stronger than usual this week. Solid episode mates!!
4 cable method:
cable 1 - from guitar to pedalboard
cable 2 - from pedalboard send to front of amp
cable 3 - from amp effects loop send to pedalboard return

Great and interesting show. I'm not a fan of his sound and playing, but loved the process.
Amazing you guys keep doing this show for free to us.
Sorry - I meant Behringer HD400
Hey guys! Please do some more Guitars & Gear episodes! Would love to learn more about Micks 335, and maybe a comparison of all his strats? Schwang on!!
Just had a chance to go see him and am regretting it even more now
You know who you should get on your show is Angus Young.

Awesome. Let’s rob a bank and free up the budget!
Angus doesn't use pedals. Does he?
He does use one single pedal that is on all the time, but it would be great to hear him talk about all his experiences.
This is not only a pedal show anymore and I love that!
Fantastic build with one of my fave players. Seriously Friday's come round way too slow!
I use the Gig-Rig power stuff and the solder-less patch cables, highly recommended.
JimSpinner I’ve had solderless let me down at a gig.. absolute nightmare. Not gigrig mind you.. I would never ever go there again.
Ewan Mcgowan Fair enough, I guess “user experience may vary “
Did you use the Evidence audio stuff? The SIS-plugs? If so, it would be a big suprize, since those seem to be bomb-proof. Never had any problems with those, because the concept is so different from, let's say George L's etc.
I've thought about purchasing the solderless cables, but always end up putting the money toward another effect. I just don't need it super quiet.
I think we need an octave fuzz episode now :) That sounded amazing!!!
Another great video guys. Really enjoyed that one :)
Super player! Great video.
