BUYER BEWARE! I paid to survey this boat. Had the inspection and survey done . A very small fraction of the problems that were identified.: the mast has been replaced but not disclosed. We identified it was not the same size as the original. Although no one had a history as to why. Standing rigging was in good condition however. Multiple signs of impact damage, hurricane or significant accident but the seller “ has no history “ The engine was seized in the Belge filled with oil just a few short months ago, there has been damage to the bow that can be observed from inside the chain locker with a repair that must be improved. The very sturdy windshield has been separated (through impact of some sort??) from the deck on the port side. The generator would not run for more than a brief period without tripping. I understand that someone else surveyed it after we stopped halfway through because there’s too many things that needed repair.. That other survey apparently found additional structural problems on hull . Primary winch drum is gauged and sharp (perhaps trying to winch wire standing rigging with dismantling? Just a guess}. The house battery bank was completely toast and there were multiple electrical question marks as well. I love this era of moody but unfortunately this one would need WELL over hundred thousand to get it safe to cross oceans IMO. If not much more and that is doing the work yourself. You would have to get it for under 100k to make it make sense. Do not buy this boat without an extensive survey. And not by someone the broker recommends. Find someone independent, CERTIFIED and out of the area to do a very thorough survey. Word of caution. I do not know if the broker (very nice people) are disclosing this info. The Brokerage is 100% is aware of all of these issues. Please verify 1. They are sharing this info with you, 2. If they say it an issue has been satisfied get written proof, invoices and statements from whoever did the repair that it is seaworthy.
I love Moody's and Centre Cockpits in general I don't like Teak Decks unless I have the money to pay someone else to maintain them . Based on a lifetime of building sailing and maintaining yachts including recently upgrading a Hood 38 for an offshore cruise my estimate to make this ready for an extended blue water cruise is 250K . I don't want to be critical of Surveyors but if you are an experienced yacht owner/maintainer/builder you will be far more vigilant in poking your nose into all those nooks and crannies with a critical eye where the subtle indicators of deeper damage/problems can exist . These are issues that wont be picked up by tapping with a hammer. Nice boat at the "Right Price" if the seller is realistic and honest, caveat emptor
I tried reaching out to the broker several times, mentioning this video, asking them if they have a survey, and asking for them to contact me - but heard nothing back. Feels like they prefer not to deal with anyone exposed to this information, otherwise - why not bother to at least just send an email response to my attempts to reach them, if not outright call an interested potential buyer - except if they're trying to avoid people who are aware of the issues brought up here.
I would not go that far. Try sleeping in the aft cabin in a rough sea and the boat heeled over 20 degrees rolling to 25. Also, with the handhelds at 6'6" high, many women will not be able to reach it. With that much space in the solon, that is a long ways to walk with nothing to hold onto.
Great yacht at a fair price for what you’re getting, my only concern would be how many hours are on the engine , generator and sails. These are the big ticket items when purchasing a 250k boat. If a person has to drop another $ 100k that would be my only issue
Learning the lines gets Credit, for adding all of the detailed information about the Cruiser/Yacht. With other reviewers, this information is either not available or has to be researched somewhere else.
Exactly. Most important piece of a sailboat is the keel. Second is the rudder. Third is the chain plates and how they are attached to the boat. He never covers any of that.
Nice boat. I hope they have a Black Friday Sale real soon as I love it but can’t afford it. This boat is a good sound safe SV and a beautiful home. Thanks.
Was it on the hard during the hurricane? When it fell over? That would explain the dings and the lack of water damage. Might even explain the oil in the bilge.
The first thing an insurance company will ask for is the age of the running and standing rigging , I have yet to buy a boat where the owner could provide evidence of that meaning a dismasting had to be an exclusion on the contract unless I weas prepared to replace the rigging. As for sails well if they are structurally sound albeit have lost some shape they are probably fine for cruising in protected waters but may not pass muster for offshore cruising .
The curve of those overhead "airline" locker doors reduces their usable space a lot. But it creates more head and shoulder room and makes the space feel a lot more open. That feels like a very spacious forward cabin.
Normally I like the rear cockpit but now after watching lots of videos I’m leaning towards the center cockpit because of waves breaking on the back of boats in high seas. Seems a bit more safe and better visibility.
Good luck nieuwe eigenaar 🎉.
Why don't you tell us the boat name, size, builder and year before doing the tour? Standing at the helm you said (quote) " everything you need" but failed to tell us what the helm station actually had.. instrumentation, switches, control buttons, inhaul/outhaul ... what? what lines do the winches control? are they motorised? what power/size were the davits? ie what size tender could it hold? Was the transom part of the rear locker, ie its door/access from water , or is that separate? What instrumentation did the cockpit have? What make was the mast... was it stepped or what... how many spreaders.. was there solar, radar, what instrumentation was there... After 8 minutes of a 24 min video you had finished the external tour and then went below.... Its a sail boat and most of the most important stuff is outside... disappointing sales video in my opinion, when such a lovely boat could be presented and sold in much more professional manner...
beautiful boat - I'm fascinated by the steering binnacle - I've seen this type with the wheel behind the binnacle instead of in front of it - but I can't find any information on it. I think it is listed as a Whitlock but I don't know that name. Any help?
What is wrong with this boat? Hurricane damaged? One other Moody 54 on YW, two years older, selling for $397k. Even Hunter 50s are listing for $300k. Something is up with this.
For 400k I’d be buying a brand new Beneteau Oceanis, Hanse, Dufour, Lagoon, Excess, Seawind, or Fountaine Pajot. Frankly I’m of the opinion if you’d buy any sailboat like the one in this video for anything more than 100k, you’re throwing money down the drain. By the time you fix it and get it seaworthy, you’ll be at new boat prices… for a far less capable boat, it’s going to be nowhere near as nice as a new boat. The new boat is going to have 40 years of technology advancement, brand new premium interiors, brand new engines and generators, brand new hull, brand new sails, lines, rigging, hardware, everything, and 40 years of less general wear and tear. It’s not even a question in my mind. The people spending 400k on 40 year old sailboats have lost the plot, I just named 8 manufacturers that you can get a brand new 40-47 foot monohull or catamaran. The delta between the 2 is almost unimaginable, the 40 year old boat would have to come at a cost of 1/5 of the new boat, AFTER repairs.
As someone who has been around sailboats my whole and is based on the East Coast, one of the most important parameters of sailboats is draft. Over 5ft. and you've got a real problem. This guy never mentions the draft, I'm guessing over 6 ft. With deep draft, boats can only go in the Ocean or very deep lakes. I.CW. is off limits (unless motoring or staying in the channel.) The Bahamas is off limits. Most bays and lakes, off limits. Boats like this are only good on the West Coast or as ocean sailors.
Re decking: "I like the teak a lot"... you won't say that when you walk on it barefooted on a sunny day. Nor will you be thinking this when you have to pay big bucks to replace it and depending on how it is affixed to the deck underneath it, fixing any leaks that the screws that hold it down have caused.
Owner of a Hood 38 Blue Water Cruiser here, I'm a fan of the Keep it Simple principal ours just has plain but tidy painted decks with contrasting non skid that is like 60 grit sandpaper, exactly how it should be IMHO. The down sides of teak, 1, It can be slippery when wet 2. It can be very hot underfoot in the tropics 3. Its a heavy timber and adds weight up high where you dont want it. 4. If its old it will need replacing which is a big and expensive job. 5. You dont know what problems lurk underneath
Interesting design but the lack of water access means this one is not for people who spend much time in the water. The rear bed should be larger for the size of the cabin.
Not anywhere. To do that you need a boat like Bernard Moitessier's Joshua. Double ended steel ketch, full keel (with separately stayed masts), inside steering, sheltered prop, integral rudder. Yeah that thing is an absolute BEAST! He STUPIDLY lost the boat during a hurricane when he wasn't even on it when it dragged anchors onto the rocks off of Baji and got piled up with other boats while he was partying! I've read stories whereby glass boats are sunk by whales. I believe Joshua once had it's masts dipped in water rounding the horn. Do not know how true that was. Moitessier's first book has about 13 pages depicting the original build. Unreal. It was built in Turkey.
Hi How did you find out about the history of this boat? I had it surveyed and the agent told me he did not know any history. BUT it did have a new mast I tracked down through Seldon to have been stepped in the Caribbean. WAY too much damage for the price. I stopped the survey. Id love to learn more. Our boat has the perfect layout. This boat not so much. Just forward of the mast has a double birth on port and two single births on the starboard side....sea births you can sleep in any sea condition. Aft cabin has a queen with bulkheads on both sides for half the length of the bed making it a sea birth too. We can sleep 7 on our boat very comfortably in any sea state. Our boat is same size too. This boat you can only sleep 3 comfortably at sea. You will fall off the aft cabin bed. The forward cabin is too far forward and will mess with your stomach going up and down. The starboard side is ok but will need lee cloths for a starboard tack. One of the seats in the solon can work too. Those overhead lockers are terrible. Everything will fall out if you open it at sea if it's the high side. Totally nuts. This boat was not designed for extended sea travels. Looks like a dock queen boat to me.
If you can buy the boat it doesn't stop there. Mooring, berthing, anti fouling, service and repairs. Having your money in a boat is a bit risky as you could lose it all through loss at sea or being wrecked. Prefer an open dayboat trailer sailer.
Deck salon designs emerged in the early 2000’s. The salon is raised up a couple steps above the normal level and the coach roof is also raised the same amount. That results in larger side windows into the salon along with usually a forward sloping skylight. The salon ends up having much more natural light than a traditional salon. The cockpit ends up being raised as well, so you get more headroom in the aft cabin. Our Jeanneau 54DS brought the deck salon approach into the mainstream and nowadays the deck salon is more the norm than the exception it was 20 years ago.
You spend too much time looking in lockers. What was the switch on the steering consul? All lockers look the same and no one cares what is in them. I would much prefer a look at the sails.
There isn’t one, not one, affordable sailboat that is 54’. Regardless of what you pay for a vessel, the operating costs are absolutely absurd for a sailboat this size. I work on these boats everyday and unless you have deep deep pockets there is no reason to step into this realm. We should be encouraging people to sail on small modest boats of 30ish feet. See the world, travel and have a boat you can maintain yourself and afford to operate.
I've been watching your videos for quite awhile now and in every video you have a habit of waving your hand in front of the camera. It adds nothing to the video, in fact it is quite a distraction. An annoyance really. Please take this as constructive criticism. Take a look at other boat reviews, and notice that no one feels the need to be Vanna White in showing various features of the boat.
Stainlesss bow roller !!!!???? Bent stern rail. Cockpit table hasn't seen varnish for years. Raymarine stuff is outdated. This boat has been under water in my opinion. Engine access is bizarre - "like a garage " he says. Aft bedding is two pieces across??!! Screwed on teak deck? if so, outdated. Vacuum system should be.

..lots of headroom - I am 6-9 - WHAT IS LOTS OF HEADROOM?
It’s a gin palace, more spent on glitz than on function
I feel sorry for the poor bastard that comes along and buys this boat not knowing what he’s getting into. What a nightmare.
"Fowerd"
There isn’t one, not one, affordable sailboat that is 54’. Regardless of what you pay for a vessel, the operating costs are absolutely absurd for a sailboat this size. I work on these boats everyday and unless you have deep deep pockets there is no reason to step into this realm. We should be encouraging people to sail on small modest boats of 30ish feet. See the world, travel and have a boat you can maintain yourself and afford to operate.
Oh no another locker . sheesh
I am a motor boater, just use like a trawler, no sail use until one learns
Expe sive for this k8ndof boat,
What's affordable?
Teak deck is a lot of work, cockpit is tooooo open, a lot of waisted space in the saloon
Why does he think that engine access is good? I would NOT want to work on that engine 😢
I’m removing this from my saved list. I will stick to the Dashew and J. Cornell lines.
Lovely vessel, wonderful layout... REALLY wish they would stop putting such small sinks in the galley in so many boats though. UGH!
That's gonna sell. Hope you're getting a commission
Im sorry but your description of "affordable" is hilarious.

If by "A Surprisingly Affordable" you mean $$250,000.00. NOTE: Spell Check - SUPRISINGLY
"Surprisingly affordable." Right, so is a 100 footer.
Affordable for millionaires.
This looks extremely expensive, very sought after boats.
Used boats are you buying someone's problems.
“Affordable” is just a little misleading, unless you plan on selling your house, cars and furnishings
Sell your house and live on the boat!
You aren't?
I think for what you get, it is a areal bargain. This is on my list of boats, but I won't be making a move for a few years.
It’s all relative. $250K is not a crazy price for this boat
Misleading? lol. This channel commonly shows liveaboards… yes we want to sell our house and cars. This boat is far cheaper than our house 🤷🏻♀️
