For this I belive India does not need to have on duty more that 2 (or 3 max) operetional Aircraft Carriers. For protection it is better to invest on submarine.
To counter Chinese we need 2 more aircraft carriers and 30+ diesel subs 8 nuclear subs to have a good hold in indian ocean and we geographical advantage too. Currently having 2 Russian akula class subs and one arihant baby nuclear bomber sub.

Actually Russia offered it for free and India had to pay only for the refurbishment but they underrated the amount of work the carrier required (it was just rotting in a dock facing cold Russian winters ) they also had to add the ski ramp as the Kiev class of ships were actually cruisers . About 80 percent of the ship was rebuilt , they also had to replace 6 of the 8 boilers in the ship as it as they failed during the sea trials
Indian Government , Defence ministry should begin to convert container ships into aircraft carriers , and modify with pre made modular towers and runways , the royal Navy has done it twice , China is doing it and even Japan has begun to experiment , if this is done then the cost will drastically fall and we can produce them in numbers and even sell cheap aircraft carriers to aspiring nations !!

I don't foresee the basis of having an aircraft carrier. While our probable conflicts would be fought in Mountains. In case of a seizure of sea lanes, China is more vulnerable in Indian ocean as their sea lane of communication is widely spread. Instead of having a carrier, India should opt for stealth subs or missile gun boats which are to be fast, stealthy and can break thru defenses of entire carrier battle group. Just like the Russians.

Why does India even have Aircraft Carriers? What benefits do they offer to India's theater of operations? Aircraft carriers are to operate aircraft against very distant targets - that's why they've been so famously used by the Americans, and even the Japanese back in the day. Since when are we trying to bomb distant targets on the other side of the ocean? All our enemies are immediately next to us - we're not trying to bomb faraway Japan or Hawaii. To fight with our immediate neighbors, aircraft carriers are not required, and are in fact expensive solutions. We would benefit from submarines to intercept Chinese shipping. We would benefit from anti-submarine destroyers to intercept Chinese and Pak submarines. We would benefit from high-speed missile boats to hit Pakistan's coastline. We would benefit from long-range bombers and missile systems. The Soviets even offered to sell us the Tu-223M Backfire bombers, which can carry enough cruise missiles to obliterate an entire naval surface fleet, but we stupidly turned them down. Imagine them carrying lots of BrahMos missiles - they'd be very dangerous to any navy. It feels like we only have Aircraft Carriers for purposes of pageantry, pomp and show - which would be a very dumb reason. Citing China's ownership of aircraft carriers is no justification for us to own aircraft carriers. After all, China has 3 major island chains around its coastline at some distance, so they'd have need for aircraft carriers. China also has globally expansionist ambitions to be the world's biggest superpower. Aircraft carrier is not only a single ship but a complete fleet of various ships such as destroyers, frigates, cruisers and even submarines all moving synchronised protecting aircraft career. Just look at the world map, west or east of India no country can afford an aircraft carrier and just think what power hold can India have in Indian Ocean though which 70% of the world cargo ships transport.
Say a navy ship spots an incoming destroyer and requests air support, then it will take 5-10 minutes to launch the naval strike aircraft and then it will take another 1/2 to 1 hour to reach the target. Todays warfare is very fast paced, in 1/2 to 1 hour a few missiles could sink your ship. An aircraft carrier could respond in 5 minutes and launch an aircraft. Also as the people said the "Dada of the sea", they dont fight every enemy, if they just look at an enemy in the eye they will run away, they only fight a few times. Also Brahmos missiles will be fitted on the Mig-29Ks of the INS Vikramaditya. Also we are not a small country like Nepal to wait for the international community, we have the capability. Most carriers have 5-6 helicopter while ours have 14, that is so that they are useful in disaster relief operations. The Indian ocean is a big are and we need to control it, a good way to do it is aircraft carriers. Also I do agree we should have maritime bombers. Also we too have major island chains like Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep which are somewhat far. During a war with China, Chinese air assets will be transferred to Tibet, we could open a new front and thin their resources by attacking S.E China or N.E China.

I don't foresee the basis of having an aircraft carrier. While our probable conflicts would be fought in Mountains. In case of a seizure of sea lanes, China is more vulnerable in Indian ocean as their sea lane of communication is widely spread. Instead of having a carrier, India should opt for stealth subs or missile gun boats which are to be fast, stealthy and can break thru defenses of entire carrier battle group. Just like the Russians.

Why does India even have Aircraft Carriers? What benefits do they offer to India's theater of operations? Aircraft carriers are to operate aircraft against very distant targets - that's why they've been so famously used by the Americans, and even the Japanese back in the day. Since when are we trying to bomb distant targets on the other side of the ocean? All our enemies are immediately next to us - we're not trying to bomb faraway Japan or Hawaii. To fight with our immediate neighbors, aircraft carriers are not required, and are in fact expensive solutions. We would benefit from submarines to intercept Chinese shipping. We would benefit from anti-submarine destroyers to intercept Chinese and Pak submarines. We would benefit from high-speed missile boats to hit Pakistan's coastline. We would benefit from long-range bombers and missile systems. The Soviets even offered to sell us the Tu-223M Backfire bombers, which can carry enough cruise missiles to obliterate an entire naval surface fleet, but we stupidly turned them down. Imagine them carrying lots of BrahMos missiles - they'd be very dangerous to any navy. It feels like we only have Aircraft Carriers for purposes of pageantry, pomp and show - which would be a very dumb reason.
Citing China's ownership of aircraft carriers is no justification for us to own aircraft carriers. After all, China has 3 major island chains around its coastline at some distance, so they'd have need for aircraft carriers. China also has globally expansionist ambitions to be the world's biggest superpower. But India doesn't have any distant targets to bomb - if we tried to bomb the Chinese coastline from ships at sea, our ships would be sunk very quickly. So aircraft carriers are beyond our practical means of use against China. Now if China invaded Thailand or Indonesia, then you could make a case, but in that situation we'd probably rely upon the international community to do something, instead of our own unilateral action.
manofsan if you have seen this video completely the very essence of having an aircraft carrier is for power projection. Aircraft carrier is not only a single ship but a complete fleet of various ships such as destroyers, frigates, cruisers and even submarines all moving synchronised protecting aircraft career. Just look at the world map, west or east of India no country can afford an aircraft carrier and just think what power hold can India have in Indian Ocean though which 70% of the world cargo ships transport.
Say a navy ship spots an incoming destroyer and requests air support, then it will take 5-10 minutes to launch the naval strike aircraft and then it will take another 1/2 to 1 hour to reach the target. Todays warfare is very fast paced, in 1/2 to 1 hour a few missiles could sink your ship. An aircraft carrier could respond in 5 minutes and launch an aircraft. Also as the people said the "Dada of the sea", they dont fight every enemy, if they just look at an enemy in the eye they will run away, they only fight a few times. Also Brahmos missiles will be fitted on the Mig-29Ks of the INS Vikramaditya. Also we are not a small country like Nepal to wait for the international community, we have the capability. Most carriers have 5-6 helicopter while ours have 14, that is so that they are useful in disaster relief operations. The Indian ocean is a big are and we need to control it, a good way to do it is aircraft carriers. Also I do agree we should have maritime bombers. Also we too have major island chains like Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep which are somewhat far. During a war with China, Chinese air assets will be transferred to Tibet, we could open a new front and thin their resources by attacking S.E China or N.E China.
