I really enjoy this series. Thanks. I designed mechanical equipment for most of my working career. Nearly ALL changes were to either fix a screw-up or reduce cost. The reduce-cost changes usually resulted in the screw-ups. There was the occasional product improvement too.

Fantastic video! Thank you for posting this. I worked for several years as a water and wastewater operator. We had an old shaper in a barn that they ended up auctioning off for a song but it was nearly 8 ft tall. It was a behemoth of a machine. I wanted to restore it but they decided to get rid of it. Obviously it wasn't a necessary tool for the job we were doing but I always wished I could have restored one. I didn't know that they made bench sized machines so now I'm going to keep an eye out for one. Thanks for the video! 🙂

Good Saturday Morning Mr Pete. I really appreciate this series. Ive restored 2 lathes (2nd being a Logan 14“) and just now getting a Bridgeport Mill up and running in my shop. I had been thinking a shaper might be next. This is just the series I needed. Keep up the great content. Thanks again.

Thank you Mr Pete. That was a treat to have an up close look at a great machine.
I'd like to share that, when Grizzly ended up with South Bend lathes, they got all of the old paperwork. For a small fee I was able to get a copy of the purchase card by providing the numbers from my lathe. I don't know if they would have paperwork on shapers or not. Also if some other company ended up with part of it, they may offer the same. I found out about this on the Grizzly website. I was also able to get a NOS part from them at a premium price. I hope this helps. Thanks

CE 3456 is on both the middle and oil soaked manuals. The zoom in at 6:30 into the video makes it easier to see. My eyes probably couldn't make it out if it wasn't for that. SO in essence they used the same manual format for at least 12 years according to the copywrite dates.

  • @DeepPastry

Go fullscreen at 6:30, both manuals are the exact same number CE3456. Though I can understand how they sort of look different when so small and oil soaked.

I did work for Amsted and I was there in1968 as an apprentice. I worked on the planners which at that time as I remember there was only two planners but now, and I could be wrong, I think at one time they had 4 working planners. Of course South Bend lathe has been out of business for quite a while. As I remember they had only two products at that time. They had the South Bend Lathe and the Johnson press. I did not know that they had made a shaper.

There is so much to learn when comparing old literature and parts lists as a person tries to determine a machines age and its evolution. I think it is so interesting that you have two machines that appear to be just a few years apart and then dig out the details. Great video and I watched the extra credit, will the extra credit stuff be on the test? I know you heard that question as a teacher. I once had a teacher who answered it this way, "if I say it you better be prepared to answer it on a test."

Mr. Pete, I have a narrow base early version of the SB shaper. Mine came with some paperwork, "How to run a metal working shaper", just like the one you have, use of postal zone prior to inclusion of the zip code. Copyright on mine is 1952, "Edition 2, 1953. I also have bulletin 5408D, the "The improved South Bend 7" bench Shaper" highlighting the force feed circulation. Copyright on it is 1954. I imagine its possible the early version was produced after 1954, but this at least indicates the change over happened sometime in late 1953 to 1954. I wasn't aware SB had date stamps inside the cabinet, so I will have to investigate. Thanks for tips

I am sure most people on here know that the NEMA frame size denotes the size of and hole pattern of the motor mounting base, the center line of the shaft line above the mounting surface, the size of the shaft in fact everything you need to know about the motor except the HP, the rpms and the voltage. If you have 215 T any 215 T will fit, of course that is all it means but the frame size is explained in most electric motor books, including many furnished by the electric motor companies to larger consumers of their products. If you have a device without a motor you can use the dimensions to know what motor would best fit your needs. These books were common a few years ago and I am sure the information is available on line on most search engines.

Whenever I try to date a piece of equipment...there always seems to be a curveball, like your cabinet dated 1956 and the oily manual from 1966. Perhaps they made a large run of cabinets in '56 and had them in stock. Or perhaps that style cabinet was used for other similar sized machines. I always enjoy the research and detective work. If you do enough digging on the inter web, someone, in some forum, always seems to have an answer. Anyway, great series Mr. Pete.

Mr. Hamilton was the tech writer who put together the manuals. This was someone technically inclined who could write a complete sentence--most engineers cannot. The manual was a necessary evil as far as marketing and management were concerned, like the box the machine came in. Management wanted to spend as little money as possible. Keep in mind that these were produced with lots of line art illustrations, half-tone photos, and photo typesetting...all of which are expensive. Now we have computers and desktop publishing. However, some things never change: engineers STILL cannot write a complete sentence. There will always be a place for a literate man in business.

Be careful with that paint. I’m guessing it probably has lead in it.
