Another scary overtake

  • It seems to be an IVECO flatbed belonging to Simply Scaffolding, but unfortunately I can't make out the registration. Letter sent to the company.
    Why do people overtake so closely? It's in the face of oncoming traffic in a lane only just wide enough for the vehicle. It's definitely not wide enough for both his vehicle and mine.
    In fairness, this sort of incident is very rare. I think the last overtake I had like this was 7 months and some 3000 miles of cycling ago.

    Sorry to hear about your experience. Yes, it's amazing how badly some impatient people overtake!! I often see this on some twisty corners near my house, double white lines, oncoming traffic, and blind corners. Muppets!

    Whilst cycling can certainly be very intimidating sometimes, it's still actually really safe, even here in the UK. It's about as safe as walking - I'll bet that surprises you!

    If that way of overtaking goes wrong, somebody will die.

    Riding a bike on a road with no shoulder is suicidal.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup! It's even more silly on the 'bent: I often hit 45 down this hill, and I'm still getting overtaken!!! (40 limit for motor vehicles)

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although the videos I put up aren't showing this, cycling is actually relatively safe, around as safe as walking in the UK. It could be much safer though, if a few drivers didn't behave as they do. Hence this video footage - it's a campaign to make a difference, and it's why I report every single driver that I can.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I now take the whole lane down this stretch. It's too narrow for any vehicle to overtake a cyclist, unless there's no oncoming traffic and in which case the blighters can use the other lane.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @puretroubleman No, I was talking about having a driving licence. I do have quite a lot of cycle training, including having done a cycling instructor certification.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was on a bicycle, not driving! I should have taken the centre of the lane to prevent his dangerous overtake, as it's too narrow for a motorvehicle to overtake a cyclist on this section, unless there's no oncoming traffic and they can use the other lane.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I know Jacomus, and he definitely meant the driver!

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    No worries! I had two more points to add, that I was doing approx 25mph here, which shows rank impatience by the Simply Scaffolding driver, and that no matter how slow someone else is driving, that will never be an excuse for such a stupid and dangerous overtake.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Oldsellerros That says perhaps less about cycling, and more about the bad state of driving there?

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mate! The ATC-2000 camera has quite a narrow field of view, and so the overtakes are closer than they look in your own helmet camera. Think along the lines of the recent close overtake video you posted.

  • @P3ktoRis
    @P3ktoRis 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @lsmike Since this incident I take the entire lane along this section, forcing drivers to wait a few seconds, or to overtake properly in the oncoming lane.
    do you do that out of the city too? when speed of the cars is higher? this is dangerous what you are doing, not only for yourself but for the cars who are on the other side, you have to know that there are people who are not thinking the same thing as you are or not thinking at all, so drive safe.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Taking the lane in this situation is *much* safer than staying to the left. It has the effect of dissuading most sensible drivers from overtaking when they know they shouldn't, but feel pressured to, and it leaves enough room to correct for the mistakes from the very few idiot drivers who do try to overtake where they shouldn't. By being out in the lane you're in exactly the right place to be seen by drivers, you're much less visible when riding to the side because of tunnel vision.

    van drivers often forget they aren't in their own car this is worst at breakfast time, lunch time or close to knocking off time.
    With the majority of bad drivers it's inattention but with a few it's down right aggression I think this is a case of the former.
    Your life is worth less than the banter between three scaffolders.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cycling is not a lot more dangerous in the UK than it is in the Netherlands. They are both in the same ballpark, and would be considered minimal risk. It's safer to be mixed with the other traffic than it is to be segregated on cyclepaths.
    Motorcycling is a different kettle of fish, and is *much* more dangerous, mostly because of that acceleration. It's 3.5 times more dangerous than cycling, and that's including motorway miles which makes the motorcycle look a lot safer than it really is.

    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a very nice car, LOL! I'm just not stupid enough to want to drive it in Central London, especially because the bike is faster door-to-door, and I don't want a fat ass.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sjtom57 No, not really. In the UK, cycling is about as safe as walking anywhere, much safer than most people imagine. Mind you, walking is more dangerous than most people imagine too, with so many people being killed by drivers on the pavement (sidewalk).
    The danger here comes from stupid drivers like this one. Since this incident I take the entire lane along this section, forcing drivers to wait a few seconds, or to overtake properly in the oncoming lane.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, it's not as close as your overtake, but still poor driving. This ride is actually on my fixed wheel Langster.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mektar2k7 I agree, I don't think he was a very good driver either.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @P3ktoRis It's safer for me, and it's safer for everyone following the highway code. As for those speeding or overtaking dangerously, and not following the highway code, they are dangerous for everyone anyway. My actions make no difference to the risk they present to others.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's no pride involved at all mate, that's about the only practical road to use for my commute to work. Here in the UK public highways are for the use of all, not just car drivers.
    Assertive cycling, owning the lane, solves nearly all the problems here. It's only a tiny percentage of drivers who then still overtake badly. What needs to change is their attitude, not to take bikes off the road. The more cyclists there are out there each year, the more this attitude changes.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, a bicycle. Not that it matters, that driver was an idiot overtaking on a blind rise and in the face of oncoming traffic. Real Highway Code stuff. *rolls eyes*.

  • @RichL123
    @RichL123 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    I ride a road bike in the city of Chicago and have seen my share/been a part of close encounters. That being said, I honestly don't think people should be riding bikes on roads like that. It's ridiculous to put yourself in a single lane where cars are averaging speeds of that kind. Sometimes having that much pride for bikers and being stubborn isn't the answer.

  • @mailpauljonescouk
    @mailpauljonescouk 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The truck is already braking at the same time as overtaking, suggesting that it would have been easy and safer to wait. Truck moves in too early and takes away the cyclist's safe braking distance and forward vision. Intimidating and dangerous.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    No reply - I've assumed there's no point in chasing it up, and that Simply Scaffolding are just another irresponsible company who don't care about their driver behaviour.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    They would be people who know a lot more about driving and riding than you do. People who are respected, and don't have the very intolerant and bad attitude towards other road users that you do.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cyclists shouldn't ride in the gutter, despite what ignorant car drivers think. It's the most dangerous place to ride, and it doesn't leave room to avoid a mistake like this driver's. The correct place is to take the 2/3rds position on this road to own the lane. I made a mistake of defensive riding by riding so far to the left.
    These are public highways, and there's no excuse for overtaking so closely. You'd fail your test with driving of the calibre of this chap in the video.
    KTHXBAI.

  • @adamtki
    @adamtki 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's some dangerous bike commuting. I'd avoid roads like that at all possible, unless you're willing to take the lane. Hope you're riding with a mirror. Try riding with one of those orange flags that stick out the side of your bike.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Again, you should ride much further out, and in this specific situation it's safer to take the entire lane on a bicycle. In a motor vehicle, you should not even be thinking of overtaking - doing so would fail you your test. Blind rise, oncoming traffic, and not enough space to overtake - that's three reasons not to make such a stupid decision.
    Remind me again, who qualified as a cycling instructor, you or me?

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Doh! I should know better than to take you seriously, even though you're a Leftpondian!!!!

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your ignorance is showing - I should actually be cycling further out in the middle of the road here, although that still doesn't excuse the appalling overtake. It's wrong and dangerous to cycle right next to the curb.
    I suggest you look at the picture in rule 163 of the current UK highway code.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a stupid and ignorant driving attitude, and you'd fail your driving test with that sort of thing. You're supposed to wait behind until it's safe to overtake. In this specific situation, you'll only have to wait a few seconds before there's space to overtake again at the bottom of the hill.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ahahahahaha! That really is ignorant cycling, and driving from you. 50cm is *far* too close to the kerb for safety. You should look at the photo on rule 163 of the UK highway code - look how far out the cyclist is. Also look in Cyclecraft by John Franklin, published by the Govt. Stationery office, and endorsed by RoSPA, which recommends a minimum of 60cm, and taking the entire lane in this specific situation.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cycling isn't dangerous to anyone else at all, it's drivers that bring danger to the roads. Even then, cycling in the UK is roughly as dangerous as walking, in other words pretty safe. It's not helped by drivers like the above, and those with poor attitude on the roads like yourself.
    Remind me again, why are you excusing the bad driving of the driver in this clip, and focusing on my quite legal and safe riding?

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't be silly, it's illegal to cycle on the pavement, besides which, pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists use the public highway by right.
    This is your excuse for the driver's bad overtake? LMAO!

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should learn to drive, and learn tolerance of other road users. Go and read specifically sections 163, 166, 167 and 211-213 of the UK highway code. You've just failed that required driving knowledge, and clearly need to take your test again.
    So what other road am I going to use to get to work? As a cyclist, I have the right to use the road, that's why it's called the public highway after all. As a driver, I and my car are only there by license - driving is a privilege, not a right.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's just stupid and ignorant driving. If it's not safe to overtake [1] then wait behind until it is safe.
    [1] On this section of road it's not safe to overtake at any time, whether a cyclist rides by the curb or out in the middle. That's because the lane is too narrow, plus there's a blind rise.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've got a very nice car, I'm just not stupid enough to drive it into central London and sit around in queues all day growing a fat ass.
    For that matter even my bike is both considerably nicer and more expensive than your piece of crap car. LOL!

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    What are you, 'kin stupid? Of course cyclists should be in the road. Not only do we also pay for the roads via income and council tax, but we have the right to be on the roads.
    As drivers, both of us are only there by privilege, not by right. If we drive badly enough our licenses can be taken away.

  • @lsmike
    @lsmike  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL, idiot. Bye.
