PLEASLEY: Bolsover Parish #9 of 16

- Here's a weird one for you. For centuries the River Meden has formed the boundary between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in today's village, meaning that residents here have been living in effectively two counties at once. The Meden also forms the ancient boundary of Sherwood Forest here as well - one of those, if you know, you know facts.
The upshot to that is that this video, doesn't cover the entire village, yet does still cover the entire parish. The Nottinghamshire side is in the unparished area of Mansfield, and although technically speaking I shouldn't have wandered over the border here, I did for a brief period because it would not have seemed right to leave half the village out. That said, there are bits here that are NOT covered on the Mansfield side.
On the Derbyshire side though, there's plenty I covered, including an old cross shaft which was the historic centre of the village before the Nottinghamshire side was developed, and then the old colliery which is now a nature reserve - and this one still has the old headgears in it that are in perfect condition! This is the closest I've ever been to an old mine, one that's still standing at least anyway, and it is well and truly one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.
Then there are two other areas which this one covers. A narrow deep valley is where you'll find some weaving mills along the River Meden. Since 1767 the river has powered these, as they churned out vast quantities of cotton and silk, and Viyella, a soft fabric. There were four mills in total, although all of them were unfortunately off limits.
We end this one in the smaller settlement of New Houghton to the main village's Northwest...and that village is in the delightful parish of PLEASLEY.

PLEASLEY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- The road to the mill buildings is actually a public right of way the barrier has a telecom you can use to be let through. The walk through the vale is lovely at any time of year. It’s bounded on the north by Pleasley Park Woods, an ancient woodland granted park status by Edward I back in the 11th century!
- New Houghton is usually pronounced "New 'uffen" by locals
- St Chad's church is just over the border into Mansfield and is linked historically with the mills and its previous owners. It used to stand on the other side of the river originally and Joseph Paget who owned the mills had it dismantled piece by piece and rebuilt on the other side
- The font outside St Michael's is from the old Christ Church at New Houghton, making it Victorian. The 1662 font mentioned is inside at the back and the old Norman font is in the chancel
- On Meden Square there’s a community orchard which has fruit trees vegetable and seating area and some honey bees! All fruit & veg are free for anyone to pick when they're ready. The honey from the bees is sold to help raise money for the upkeep of the orchard
- On Pit Lane, off Chesterfield Road there's a former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and you’re able to see the old steps that led up to Pleasley West railway station
Two things I was going to add to the video were that it's a shame you thought you couldn't get closer to the old mills, magnificent huge buildings, I often cycle through Pleasley Vale, there's a gap at the side of the barriers to get through, alternatively I use the Archaeological Way/Meden Trail that runs behind, and above the Mills.
The other thing I was going to mention is the pronunciation of 'Uffun hehe
Chesterfield Road is quite interesting too off Pit Lane, towards Pleasley roundabout, as this was split off when the by pass was built, there's a former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on there and you can see the old steps that led up to Pleasley West railway station.
Great videos, so far I've seen about 4, all of the Bolsover district, well put together and a great learning tool, plenty I didn't know about my local area!
Lovely video - but such a shame you didn't walk down the road past all the mill buildings - it's a public right of way and even the barrier has a telecom you can use to be let through. There's a car park behind the mills or you could have even parked in the small one at the side of the lodge on the right hand side. The walk through the vale is lovely at any time of year . Bounded on the north by Pleasley Park Woods ( ancient woodland granted park status by Edward 1st back in the 11th century!) The river Meden flows alongside the road and there are old cottages at the end that look out on a scene that would grace any calendar - including the most photogenically sighted and beautifully tended war memorials anywhere. Shame you missed it. New Houghton is usually pronounced "New 'uffen" by locals. :-)
You have to remember this is (mostly) on foot. I can't catch everything. I plan a route that catches the main stuff
Oh wait hang on, I thought you meant the mill near the village centre. You're on about the Vale right?
That being public access is not the kind of thing I'm going to know. When I see a barrier, that screams private property to me. Can't risk it unless I know beforehand I can get down there. The Picture Bit covered them though, so all was good
Don't worry about the strange boundaries. I've got an even weirder one. Over in Northern Ireland is the town of Pettigo straggling an INTERNATIONAL border UK and Republic of Ireland. And of course over in Belgium/Netherlands there's Baarle-Nassau/Baarle-Hertog, one town but where as you walk around it you cross over between Belgium and Netherlands repeatedly. Shows what fools political map-makers can be!
New Houghton is pronounced New Huffton
Same as the Cress-well/Crezz-well debate.
I'm a Lincolnshire boy. That's how it is to us. Local accents differing is part of what makes this country so great 😁
@@TheVillageIdiot Aslackby being a prime example of how place name pronunciations can differ from the spelling 😉
