All nice, but don't overdo these workouts. Keep in mind that even Kipchoge does actually very little speed workouts; his trainings consist for 85% of the time of slow, very slow runs. He has usually two running sessions per day, 13 per week! Only three of those sessions are speed workouts. Ten runs each week are simple easy runs, with a speed about 50% slower than his marathon pace (try that, and then you you know what slow means ;)). The magic of Kipchoge comes from his easy runs. The speed workouts are just the cherry on the cake and only work when you already have incredible endurance.

I’m glad you mentioned that it’s about spent time at specific intensities. Most runners and running channels only talk about milage. As a road biker who also run the occasional race I am used to only measure time spent in different zones. How many km I ride doesn’t tell the story or give much guidance. This way of thinking makes it as mentioned by you easier to use similar sessions as the pro’s. Well maybe the total time training shouldn’t be too crazy either. 😅 Thank’s for the insights!

Per request, saw this in my email but I always check your site for new videos pretty regularly.

I think your suggestions are geared to an intermediate runner. Beginners really should try 3 reps and see how they feel the next day before going straight into 8 reps. Also 35min at 10k pace when not a race is a very hard workout. Start with breaking down into 5min cruise intervals until you can string it together into a 35min @ 10k pace. I'm 59 and my 5k pace is sub 20min but your suggestions are very hard workouts.

Really like this one James! I’ve done 15 x 1k @ half marathon pace with a float recovery a couple of times in a marathon build up and I can vouch for this one, it’s brilliant!

One of the best articles that I used to get fast is from the late Frank Horwill (training for the 5k). Of course, you have to adjust the training load for your own ability.

    As usual, solid advice.
Just curious, workouts based on running distance or on running time? I've seen people on both sides vouching for one versus the other.

It's not a very helpful answer, I appreciate but both/either! It's dependent on situation. Have you seen where I discuss it here: th-cam.com/video/P3yenLdj6Pc/w-d-xo.html

I usually do Yasso 800's starting with 5 and building up to 10 a couple of weeks prior to a marathon

I also use that training. I love Yasso 800's. One of my favourites.

last year I ran my 2nd marathon. I used Kipchoge's training plan for my preparation (was edited for my level). My 1st marathon - 3x 46 min. My 2nd one - 3 h 06 min. Guys! for sure - to progeress you must be patinet and consistent. Don't be a slave to your mood. Stick to plan and feel your body. All the best
