- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, replying on Budget 2024, responded to Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi’s comment over ‘halwa’ ceremony.
She said, 'Bharat mei ek tradition hai, koi bhi accha kaam shuru karne se pehle, mooh meetha karna (Having something sweet before starting a good work is a tradition in India)

Any disaster and there used to be " DONATE GENEROUSLY" messages flashing across the media. SIR, Natural calamities are the same, but there are two major differences, human life loss in such calamities have reduced due to advance alert and the CM's and PM's begging messages have disappeared.......isn't it

Earlier any disaster like cyclone or floods, first thing that used to happen was CM relief fund and PM relief fund use to open. Not for distribution of funds but sorry to say, begging for funds. Sir, this is what she explained in her address in the parliament. That for the budget preparation everyone involved, are locked up in a building. Earlier days it used to be 8 days now 5 days. No telephone lines, no going out of the building and no connection with the outside world. So from initial days itself it was a ritual for HALWA CEREMONY, as it's considered auspicious to begin with eating something sweet before the start of any good work. Neither BJP has started this trend not Ms.Seetharaman.

Politically BJP is correct, but on Economics both BJP and Congress have the same ideology more or less. The Finance minister was mentioning that the tweak to Capital Gains was done more for uniformity and not for increasing the tax revenues. I would ask if uniformity was the goal, why not have indexation for all assets. My problem is not with the increase in the rates itself but negating the impact of inflation by removing indexation. Does not make any logical sense for me and many I am sure. Bureaucrats in the finance ministry may know better.
